What are Ae like live?

I've never seen em live.

So, can anyone give a fairly detailed description of their
live sets? (if you can be arsed)....I'm really curious. How
much is improvised? How dancey is it? Is it really
repetitive? Do they just churn out tracks from a laptop
which sound just like the originals? etc. etc.

Can anyone please describe their Ae live experience?

God, i'm here to learn like everyone else. An mp3 doesn't
really show you the experience terribly well.

ae live is wicked....

i mean.... you can't just listen to some bootleg and make a
decision based upon that - 'cos listening to a bootleg is
NOT live.

you should be there and feel the vibes and excitement - and
the smell.

ive never seen them live but if i ever get a chance to i am
going, just because i love the music so much... they could
turn a blender on and put a microphone in it for all i care.

i misse dthem at DEMF in d3troit quite a few years back; i
really would wish they'd make a return ... we don't see much
IDm action over here and they need to make a sandwich

do they improvise on hardware synths and samplers and drum
machines and stuff?

But they get more money if more people are persuaded see
them live without hearing their material first.

Seen them live 3 times, around the time Confield was
released, and each time the show has been quite similar in
vibe... Basically if you're not really into the music you
won't like it as there's no visual cues of any sort, just 2
guys with laptops and on the gigs I've been, no lights of
any sort.. Just minimum possible lighting. Musically, pretty
much what I expected. Long, slightly repetitive but
enormously complex tracks that unfold slowly.. Abrupt
changes in tempo etc. In general, less melody and more focus
on beat structures. As there's so little to see
unfortunately many people seem to get bored and either leave
or start talking over the music... Absolutely wickedly good,
can't wait to see them again.

And oh, first post after lurking for a couple of months so
hello everyone.

"do they improvise?"

how hard it is to improvise what they're doing??

offline CS2x from London (United Kingdom) on 2005-01-21 02:54 [#01469531]
Points: 5079 Status: Lurker

Well I've seen people improvise drill n bass before with
pads and controllers along with appelton live so it's not
impossible.

offline Sire from the depths (Finland) on 2005-01-21 02:58 [#01469539]
Points: 616 Status: Lurker

I'd say that most of the show is probably improvisation
built on some prepared structures. Definitely live sampling
and manipulation. The most 'live' electronic gigs I've seen

Yes I am kidding

But seriously Ae do a lot of tweaking onstage, and I suppose
some of their tools will sound slightly different every
time

yes it is, but their music is pretty simple, i mean nothing
complex about it so it's not that hard to make it sound good
even when it's 'composed' live. im not sure we will ever
agree on this anyway :)

but it's much easier to come up with something in the form
autechre do, than with something ceephax does..although
there's a big difference in music ofcourse..

their approach to playing live

yeah, it's much easier! i've tried myself a couple of times
(and note that I'm not even a musician) but althought I
managed to create perfect tracks that flows perfectly with
both confield and gantz graf...

ceephax was worse tho... but just give me a few more hours.

*the irony*

i had a chat with sean yesterday, but he was pretty clear on
one thing; keep the live-discussion for yourself... but i
listened to some of the upcoming live material and it was
awesome. he spends several hours per each 30-sec produced
live material.

it's all EXTREMELY calculated. sean is also a very
intelligent guy and leaves nothing to faith. he's so
picky... he's also hearing patterns which are way beyond for
most of us. i can understand the frustration if someone is
claiming it's all random and everyone can do it... just as
well as i know he's thinking "i don't give a shit of his
opinion".
