Analord, Honestly..

I think this is either a practical joke or a test to see
how far blind completists will go to 'collect' - rather than
appreciate - music. it really is an obnoxious thing to do -
fuck him

all the tracks (all FOUR of the tracks) are either
nondescript beats that go nowhere for all of their 90 second
to 2 minute duration.. or the generic richard james ambient
loop track that takes up a good 2.5 minutes.. then some
noise track

now I know there are some people here who, despite this and
despite being very obviously played, will or already have
paid $75 for this .. can you HONESTLY tell me how you
reconcile this with the obvious lack of effort on his part?
do you honestly feel it was worth it, or that the half songs
he put on here are even AVERAGE/worth listening to more than
once??

Two very good songs. You know, i don't care, I don't really
know whether or not a good record is worth paying out for
more than a shit record... This record was for fans, the
fans who bought it love it, I don't hear anyone who bought

Yes, from the description, I'd say you have a couple of fake
tracks.

The real ones, whilst maybe not the mindblowing, earth
shattering tracks a lot of people think, but they are good
tracks and not overly repetative. You say 4 tracks, are you
talking about Analord 1,2,10 or some other one no one else
has heard?

I think the piano in xmd5a is a bit off and that if I didn't
know it was Aphex and someone posted it here as their own,
I'd tell them to remove the piano.

I disagree. I didn't buy smojphace, because it was shit.
Analord 10 is good, but the piano sounds amateurish IMO. It
works in places, but clashes in others.

The fact that Aphex has "proven" himself in the past means I
know it's meant to be like that (whatever his
motivations may be) and it's not due to a lack of skill.
Some people would call this one rule for some, a different
one for the rest. This isn't really true. I'd have far more
respect for people like Tracy Emin if they "proved"
themselves first by doing great classical/traditional works
or did something in an established style. Then you know
they're doing something out of choice and not because they
can't do it "properly".

As I say, the rest of the track is good and even if the
piano detracts from it, it hardly ruins it.

I'd tell Aphex to remove it too, but it's a bit late now,
considering it's been pressed up and shipped, eh?

Burroughs: "people
would buy a stinking dogshit if it had a little flag stuck
in it with an AFX logo?" Picasso said, "I could draw a
straight line and sign it and people would buy it." He did,
they did. The point is, no one would pay for a line I
drew... the reason? I've not done several masterpieces
already?

Nah, there's more subtley to it than that- as I've already
said, I didn't buy smojphace, and I won't. Doesn't that make
it clear I'm not some obsessive completist?

offline qrter from the future, and it works (Netherlands, The) on 2005-01-20 09:57 [#01468378]

heh. :)

but you raise a strange point though - you didn't buy
Smojphace because you thought it was shit, yet you bought
Analord10 (assuming you did buy it, which I don't really
know) without first hearing any of the music.

I'm not saying it's silly to buy records from people based
on their earlier work (although at the price of 40 quid it
does become silly, I think), but then saying you didn't buy
Smojphace because it sounded shit to you, isn't much of an
argument.

offline dog_belch from Netherlands, The on 2005-01-20 09:57 [#01468379]

I think, there's not just the musical merit, but the
personality that goes with it. Picasso was a giant amongst
men (despite his stature), RDJ a legend (despite being a
ginger). I guess it comes down to some more basic human need
or something... but in terms of Dickie's music, there is
always something more musically in his releases, even his
shit ones have something that brings you back, if you're a
fan of course. The fact that he's a legend adds to it. But I
don't think he's ever really taken the piss, or released
something deliberatly shit, other than Smojphace. One must
take into account record label demands and other things, the
make their own decisions to as to what goes on a single or
album. Bottom line, if you don't like Aphex, don't buy his
records, don't listen to them. Simple.

I think it could also be that people but afx records because
there's a pretty good chance that it's very good music and
worth buying. The degree to which you expect or hope it's
good will determine how much you're prepared to spend.
And £40 for one record is a lot, for a record it's
not really that much. A week's fags? A weekends drinking
money? Half an average prozzy? (not that I'd know)

that's exactly what I dislike - all that hype surrounding
him. it detracts from the music, in my case.

one of the things I thought was interesting about a lot of
electronic music, when I started listening to it, that the
persons behind it stepped back and let the music do the
work.

I guess I also really dislike fanboyism. I hate it when
ae-fanboys can't stop rattling on about how
intricate/amazing the music/technology is, spawning all
kinds of theories and bullshit like that. to me it's kind of
embarrassing.
the same goes for Aphex fanboys who can't stop fawning over
the person behind the music or portraying him as some kind
of messiah.

you're completely right ofcourse, if you don't like his
music, you don't buy it and/or listen to it. but this is a
messageboard after all, so you'll have discussion,
especially if someone chooses to be as prolific as D. James
is.

just for the record. i used to love aphex twin. but there
really is no 'analord' even though he clearly believes he
is, and prices his records accordingly.
his heyday is most definitely about 8 years behind us now,
and you simply have to listen to something from SAW II or
anything from the mid-nineties to make it clear to yourself
that his recent material is, at best, only on a par with all
his imitators. listen to the stuff and be honest with
yourself.

I know, i know, alright, i know. I agree it's a
messageboard, let's discuss, but I don't understand keep
fucking carping on about RDJ "taking the piss", because I
don't think he does. Some anonymous dickwad relasing another
Tribal Trance 12" is taking the piss.

RE Dickie the legend, I blame the fanboys, not the man
himself. I think he's a legend because of the music he's
created, the amount of time he's remained ahead of the game.
The tidbits and trivia are just for fun but shouldn't be
taken too seriously. I wish you liked the Twin more and
didn't let all the waffle get between his soothing sounds
and your lovely ears.

twins stuff and thought that it was much different than
anything hes ever done - but if its shit its shit regardless
of the artist, i love autechre but if there next lp is shit
- i wont be shelling out the 20 usd - sometimes artists make
beautiful work, other times - not - rdj makes great music
most of the time, and to his fans - he can release a two
track 180g audiophile record with a faux leather binder for
80 usd - no one said you had to buy it. it may be a little
pompous, whos to say, even aphex twin himself cannot even
say, the worth of that music to his fans.

I don't think he's taking the piss either, neither with
Analord or Smojphace.

although I agree that the fanboys build him up a lot, I do
certainly think he propogates the myth himself. all the
silly stories he tells to the media, who do ofcourse lap it
up (after which the fanboys lap it up), but he does keep
telling those kind of stories.
and the whole Analord hype is definately created by Rephlex
and therefore most likely RDJ himself.
so it would be nice to get all the waffle out of the way,
but a significant part of the waffle is created by the man
himself.

I do have quite a few Aphex Twin records, but I hardly ever
listen to them, I just don't hear what's supposed to be so
great about them. I do enjoy a track now and then, though.
