Mine hasn't changed that much... since then Shadow of the
Colossus and Resident Evil 4 have earned a spot on there,
and I'm surprised I didn't list a Thief, System Shock or
Splinter Cell game. Kick off Ratchet and Clank and San
Andreas, I only put them there because they were fresh in my
mind and I was overly excited. Ninja Gaiden is too high,
too... I probably like Devil May Cry 3 a little more,
action-game wise.

And Metal Gear Solid 3- Subsistence is probably 1st now, it
fixed the problems in MGS3, most inspiring game I've played.

Yeah, Manhunt... a phenomenal game sunk by its negative
press. The last portion of the game is amazingly intense.

DM- fixed the broken camera system, which was the only
complaint I had about MGS1 and 2 and added multi-player.
Adding Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2- Solid Snake was a nice
treat too.

Not being able to see what was 15 feet in front of you
unless you stand still and press a button wasn't cool in
1998 and was even less cool in 2004, especially since the
game takes place in such expansive environments, and without
a radar to clue you in as to what's ahead. It was shit and
Kojima smartly fixed it (and pocketed some extra cash while
he was at it). And aesthetically, the old camera was very
unflattering to the jungle environments, the new one really
shows it off better.

I actually like it, it adds to the difficulty... it was fun
having to actually take cover and check out the place before
advancing forwards; I always found somewhere to hide when I
entered a new area and did a quick overview to see if I
could see everything I wanted to see, and if I didn't, I had
to relocate before taking another overview. Then, I figured
out where the soldiers were and how to get them or
preferably sneak past them in the most effective way. If I
didn't see all the soldiers from what I thought was my best
vantage point I had to pay for it by being spotted and
possibly killed. Even though it kind of makes more sense to
be able to see better while walking, I also think it's kind
of realistic; if you were there, would you be running in,
assessing the situation while running and possibly finding
you're in trouble a bit too late, or do you think you'd
scout out the place a bit before doing anything?

offline Ophecks from Nova Scotia (Canada) on 2006-12-16 09:23 [#02018139]

I think the difficulty it added was artificial and forced.
The soldiers had laughably unrealistic ''vision cones'' to
accomodate your handicapped vision, and that was easily
taken advantage of. There are much better better ways of
making a player sit and scout a situation than by putting
such an unintuitive limit on their natural senses... better
enemy AI and level design, for example. I love MGS but the
game has glaring flaws in these areas and the camera
contributed to it.

(there's still work to do. Subsistence doesn't totally fix
it, either, since the enemy AI hasn't been suitably beefed
up... the game is slightly easier than before, just like
Twin Snakes did nothing to compensate for the addition of
first person aiming)

The old camera had less to do with strategy and AI and more
to do with technological restraints. Draw distance and
whatnot. It was pretty unacceptable in 2004 to have that
system.
