OLDBOY

I can't believe it, OldBoy, the amazing Korean film is to be
re-made by Hollywood!! What is the point in re-making all
these foreign films, most notably asian movies recently, I
don't see other countries rushing to re-make recent
Hollywood movies.

When is it going to stop? I though this re-make phase they
were going through was dying down but obviously not. I can't
tell you how shocked i was when I heard this news, if you've
seen the film you'll know why.

The end of the world is coming.

In other words, and more accurately, I mean "Who gives a
fuck?"

people who don't like films they love being dumbed down for
western audiences?

If they like the film why not release it in the US, that
would save the costof creating a whole new (inferior) film.
If they think the problem is
the US audience then why not try to do something about the
audience', like teach them how to read, hand out leaflets at
the showing of the film or something,

step 1. look at screen, at the lower part of the screen you
will see
these white letters, these will eventually take shape and
form words.

step 2. your mind should now register following words which
all make a sentence

step 3. hard one this... read

step 4. realise that the character on screen talking in some
foreign
language is actually saying what your reading on screen,
confusing i
know.

any trouble, do some light reading at home, start with
packets of
serials and work your way from there, in no time you'll be
able to
watch foreign films without us having to spend lots of money
on
inferior remakes!

How do you know it will be dumbed down and inferior? The
subtitles to a lot of eastern films aren't even accurate
translations of the original script and a lot of the nuance
of the languages are lost, so a lot of the enjoyment you
gain out of the films will be you feeling special for liking
a foreign film. Like autechre fans when they listen to
autechre. They beleive they are better than every other
music listener because they "get" or see something that most
people don't.

if you have watched OldBoy which I can tell you haven't,
then you would know that by its very nature it would have to
be dumbed down for an American audience,

you wouldn't want a remake of the Godfather would you?

There is nothing wrong with them remaking it though. It's
not as though they are damaging the original in any way, nor
are they forcing you to watch it. So what's the problem?

If it was a remake to switch dialog into my native tongue
and with more relevence to my own culture then maybe yes, I
wouldn't mind.

Not especially, but I wouldn't waste time complaining about
it. I can imagine it would find a market somewhere.

they are damaging the original in that the legacy of the
original is often forgotten as the masses associate the name
with the hollywood remake.

and they stink.

Then you are not concerned only with the quality of the film
itself, but more exernal factors associated with it. Why
should you care what others think of it if it gives you joy?

Re makes are not a bad thing, if someone really likes the
movie they will search down the original.

i only agree with remaking a movie if the original movie was
really obscur and cheaply made, not an already established
classic. That said, I'm not actually against
remaking already established good movies, for the simple
fact that I couldn't care less.

Remake of the Ring and the Grudge were both great.

Vanilla Sky was a load of tripe.
