in the UK its difficult, i've been looking for work for a
few months now without success... there just aren't enough
vacancies. I'll keep at it for a while though, should get a
job eventually.

i've been doing web/graphic design for 5 years now. i took
one year of schooling and learned next to nothing. i would
recommened going to a community based college (re:cheap) as
long as it's acredited.

i graduate from school 3 years ago and was never able to
find steady work anywhere. i gave up until about a year ago,
when people who noticed my work posted started asking about
flyers.

basically, if you really want to get into it or go further
into it, go to book stores, read graphic design magazines,
visit a ton of websites, and try to educate yourself a
little bit before deciding on a school or path.

http://www.patternawareness.org is a project i've had going
for the past 8 months now. it will be expanding soon. well,
as soon as i learn php and css. ;]

I work as web-designer, though am not professional - just
fooled the boss, and still succeed in fooling him, but he
seems to like my work and pays me money (few money) for more
than half of a year already. (long live adobe, macromedia
and corel- lots of working places they caused).

this was made not at work, just for me and
friends;
that is one site which is indeed online and
working, and i have made this crappy design in three or four
hours - like this: "Matvey, we have a new task here, a site
for a town, need to be ready this evening. The town is
called Port-Deposit. I'm clear?"

i'm willing to do some print works soon, for myself, because
I consider print design and pre-press to be more serious
activity that the shite i'm into at this job. time to grow
up, i think.

well, right now i just work in a warehouse where the work is
not that hard, the collegues are allright, etc...

i've worked one month as a webdesigner untill the job was
finished. then i did some 'free-lance' stuff (in het zwart
wel)
and still do that once in a while.

but i's hard to keep up to date sometimes with difficult
working hours, other stuff (bands, doing reviews for my
webzine,..). i seriously need to improve my php skills and
start drawing more..

and i live in a shithole, so finding a job in a radius of 60
km is not that obvious. moving to the bigger cities would be
better.
but there are other reasons why that's not possible at the
moment

I don't like web design, i'd like to make my own web site
but thats about it...

I was going to send that COIL DVD set to Coil and see what
they think, although its kind of a bad time to do that now
with the singers death and all.

I have been working as a Graphic Designer for the past 7
years and my advise to anyone who is thinking about this
career path is DON'T. The job market is flat and most jobs
are eather short term contracts or crappy pay. I was lucky
in the respect that the job market was fairly boyant when I
started, god help those who are just starting out, with my
experience and extensive folio, I still find it hard.

I you can go more towards Illustration rather than Graphic
Design you will stand a better chance of finding decent paid
work. Also if you have the brains and inclination look
towards studying Interlectual Property Law.

I was planning to go into advertising. and work for a
company that makes advertising movies and stuff like that. I
think I'm pretty good at those. you think there is work in
there?

The only real money in advertising for someone who is just
starting out is in copy writing. It would be a good idea to
make a show reel advertising yourself with interesting
slogans throughout. Try to make it less than 20 seconds long
so you can E-Mail it with a well designed Resume/CV

First I would secure one big client at least 30% of your
time based on a 40 hour week.

Contact Orchard temp agency and Aquent, you should be able
to find them in your phone book. They will make you do a
test to see how proficent you are. The test is easy and they
will let you retake it if you have fgorgotten how to do
something.
