Half-Life 2 Silver/Gold...can you physically buy it?

I really wanna get hold of Half-Life 2 when I have the
money, but I don't wanna be purchasing a downloadable copy -
I have always preferred to physically have the game, and
with what I've heard about Steam lately, I don't even wanna
try downloading it (especially since the only place I can
get online now is at my girlfriend', and she only has
512Kbps ADSL connection)

Can you actually physically buy a boxed copy of Half-Life
Silver or Gold in the UK? Or at least get it shipped here?

Would really appreciate if anyone could help

thanks everyone :)

also, do you require a net connection just for installation,
or to play the game at all?

because if you need a continual connection just to play the
game, I may as well not even bother thinking about ever
getting it :(

you've still gotta register through steam if you buy the
retail version. there is no manual with the boxed copy.
it's more expensive to buy the box. and, you get more
(hl1:source, and valve's back catalog) if you buy through
steam.

if i had it to do over again i'd definitely download it.

Yes, you require the internet just for registration, and I
hope they burn in hell!

yeah. i think you need a connection to play it. i believe
that's how steam works. not sure if you need a continual
connection though.

of course, i hear there are cracks that allow you to play
offline. that'll probably put the nix on playing cs though.

i don't care about playing CounterStrike....all I wanna be
able to do is play Half-Life 1 with the new engine, and play
Half-Life 2

i would like the T-shirt and hat and everything too, but
form what i can see you only get that with Gold.

but i thought Gold is only available as a download?

and why the hell don't you get a manual with the boxed
version????!

i just saw game.net have the Collectors Edition up for
preorder, but it's in a silver tin, and you only get
Half-Life: Source, Half-Life 2, Counter Strike: Source, a
t-shirt and the Prima Guide

i'm sure i saw pics of a guy who had a boxed copy of the
Gold version though :(

As far as I know, u can only buy the retail "bronze
package"(just HL) the gold and silver are a planned release
but not as of yet(they recieve alot of complaints.) As for
Steam I haven't had any problems, the download are very
quick(up to a mb per second)and I don't have a much better
connection than your girlfriend, Oscillik. HL2 is single
player! there is no multiplayer yet, their multiplayer is
Counter strike source, and as far as I know the only update
for HL2 was a sound stuttering problems. You do not need the
internet to play HL2.

Gold version doesn't come with a T-Shirt.

You get a box with it containing all the stuff you ordered.
The only thing missing is a CD copy of teh game. You can
easily burn yourself one of those though.

If you can leave your connection running overnight you'll be
able to download Half-Life 2 through Steam.

Collectors Edition is more or less the same but you don't
get the entire back catalogue with it.

that's the thing, i would love to get the entire back
catalogue...would really like to get hold of Blue Shift

but i can't leave my computer hooked up to my girlfriend's
net connection

so i guess it'll be the Collectors Edition for me then :(

thanks giginger

"blue shift" isn't part of the back-catalogue.

I have no idea why. well, it was crap anyway.

you do need to authenticate your copy once, after that you
don't need to be online to play.

Steam has an inbuilt system now that compresses games and
divides it into burnable chunks (for cd-r or dvd-r), so you
can burn your own back-ups (my back-up of HL2 is 4 cd-rs).

there is a manual online, SUPPOSEDLY - I haven't been able
to access it. you don't even need a manual, really. if
you've played HL, you'll do fine in HL2.

isn't it? that's naff :(

oh well, i guess i'll just settle for the boxed Collectors
Tin

i'm gonna have to buy one of those zboard keysets (i'm
assuming they're gonna make one)

either that or i'll just have to config my standard gaming
keyset

thanks man :)

oscillik: you need a internet connection on *your* computer
to activate it once you've installed. you don't need it
after that, though (run steam in offline mode).

additionally, hl1 in the source engine isn't as great as it
sounds. "objects" such as canisters, etc in hl1 aren't
actually seperate objects; they're part of the world itself,
so you'll find things are actually affixed to the ground and
can't move. therefore you can't knock them around, etc,
like in hl2. you see very little of the physics engine
displayed.

ah, true :p

are valve giving any of the hl expansions as part of the
back catalogue? doesn't sound like accurate terming to me
:-(

"opposing force" is part of the back catalogue.

you will pretty much need a constant internet connection to
play halflife 2, even just the single player. the reason for
this is because if steam detects an update for itself, or
for half life 2, you will not be allowed to play the game
until both steam and the game itself are updated. I know
this for a fact becuase I was experiencing this problem a
few days ago, and it happened despite the fact that I have
HL2 unlocked in offline mode. I've said it before and I'll
say it again: Steam is without a doubt the shittiest piece
of shit fucktwat crap-sandwich disguised as a program, ever.

I really have had ZERO of the problems you have been
complaining about, so I guess it would seem more subjective
than you think.

the initial install from the box took a little over an hour
on my machine... but, that was the night it was released,
and the servers were getting hammered, so i guess
authentication was dragging.

since then the only complaint i've had is that the friends
network seems to be a turdpile, because none of my friends
EVER appear online.

I authenticated the content already downloaded on my
computer about 15 minutes after the authentication servers
were cranked up - which must've been among a hailstorm of
authentication requests.

the activation took about 20 minutes. which I didn't mind,
it was just after 9 o' clock in the morning here, so I could
read the paper while having a nice morning-shit. :)

Friends pretty much doesn't work, no. I don't mind that
much, most of my CS-playing friends are on icq anyway. but
they do advertise with it like it's such a great feature,
which seems pretty dumb.

if i had it to do over again i would definately have
downloaded it through steam pre-order stylee.

buying the boxed retail version seems really dumb in
retrospect.

I thought it was a pretty cool system, worked very well.

except for Valve's creditcard-paranoia, but I got that
fixed.
