Listen to Popol Vuh, it's not traditional Japanese but it is
good. Very good.

I heard this cool Norweigan jazz guy playing his trumpet in
an old-fashion Japanese stylee. It was mad wicked but I
don't know what he was called so forget it.

speakin of traditional music:
ensemble nipponia - japan kabuki

type these names somewhere :

Kodo - japanese drummers ( loads on slsk ), the best ive
heard
Kabuki - very intense music from Japanese Kabuki theatre
Taiko - little brother of Kodo drum, smoother and thinner
Poetry chant -( search for Shufu Abe )- very very
traditional japanese chants, one voice, constant modulation -
brilliant
japanese flute - well known, the best is to listen to it at
late evenings

and from electronics world - ryoji ikeda, more minimalictis
than alva noto.

well, maybe thats because it has its own name which we dont
know, but for sure theres loads of kodo and taiko drums in
this theatre, so when you find these two and the flute, you
will know the essence of japanese traditional music :)

search in japan room on slsk, some guys have loads of this (
along with J-rock )

yeah, i'll look for that...btw, i was asking about it in
japanese slsk room, but i only got a few replies..will check
again that too though.

btw, it's weird how no on recommended anything by dj
krush...the record with toshinori kondo is fabolous, and he
put plenty of traditional japanese drums on his last album
as well.
also susumu yokota often uses some of those traditional
sounds.

i need some of that original music though :)

yes , yokota is quite traditional, at least he uses some
traditional instruments, but ive listened to latest krush
album - didnt liked it, dunno, maybe its too weeird ? i
really dunno.

When I was an exchange student in Japan, we were taken to a
private taiko performance by a team of awesome people. It
reminded me of Vooredoms, and the spiritual nature of the
performance was astral. Those drums were reaching gods, I
swear.

thats their purpose as i know :) kodo and taiko are often
used in various ceremonies, mostly religion ones.
