..but please check this demo/track I did this morning. .. this isn't the way the final version will be sequenced, and there is an element that I think is pretty crucial to the mix that has not been added yet..
anyway, let me know what you think.
The Hostile Inactive
by the way.. there will be a mikro12 compilation released sometime in the very near future. at the latest Q1 2005.

it's okay.
it has a pretty nice melody and you do some nice things with panning. it does get a bit boring at the 1:40 mark.

I listened again and have determined that it should have faded out between 2:00 and 2:12. Also you should try making the percussion do more sorta inside stuff, dragging and pushing and inverting the beat instead of just adding flurries of clickity click. Also the drum sounds are grating and thin with no big bum to balance them out. Also the song needs a second tonal center so it goes somewhere and comes back.

well it's supposed to be like an intro track so it really isn't something that is meant to be that involved. since it is really just a canvas, that which is missing from it now will serve as a distraction, or another focus for the listener. what did you mean by 'inside stuff'? pushing and dragging and that.. describe those if you can
how are you forming these criticisms, though? not just fleetmouse. artists on great labels put out albums with tracks that are on par with, or worse, than this ..or what it will be.. so is your input basically how you'd direct the song? or what .. most xltronic spam criticism seems to be more about theory and structural things that are not necessarily vital , .. what I am concerned with is how good it sounds in terms of its production and craftsmanship. I need to know if it could be passed off as the work of a signed artist, and what the track is like as it is.. I'm not concerned with where you'd take it/how you'd change the drums/melody etc.. or whatever.

My input was based on the fact that I thought it got boring and I would have just skipped forward to the next track. Whether the track was by you or the greatest electronic artist ever I would do the same thing. Anyone can make tracks that sound professional these days, so what's the point on getting comments on how good the technical production values are on something that is supposed to be an emotive peice of art which falls short of the mark.

You said "so it really isn't something that is meant to be that involved."
But at the same time you are looking for award winning comments as to your production values. Look i could drop ass into a mic with better production values and it would still smell like shit.
You wanna make music that means something to you as an artist then fine. But otherwise you pretty much just killed that theory with the opening quote

I wasn't talking about whatever you posted.. I'm saying the general response to the work kids put up on xltronic.
not everyone can/is making professional sounding music.. they just have professional pirated software tools. mastering and finalizing is really a complicated process. and by the way, most people use pre-formed pads and soft synths and it sounds like they've come up with something really impressive when in fact the most interesting/best part of their track was done by someone else.
fleetmouse .. I wasn't being defensive/pissed off at anyone's response.. I was curious about the intent of the critics, and since I am very particular/personal about what I produce and have developed my own style/process, I'm not going to listen to people who offer up ways THEY would like the track to sound.. all of the criticisms in this thread (good and bad) could just as easily be turned on all of your favorite artists' work. so it is more important to someone who offers up their work-in-progress to get an evaluation of the piece as it is - I'm not looking for executive producers here.. I don't need help or ideas.. just feedback

I never said that. qrter and melack's comments were what I'd want/expect. when people start playing the role of a producer and give ideas on how to make it better for them, that's just not what I'm asking for, y kno? ..and their input isn't invalid either.. it's just not what I'm looking for, and I'm sure a lot of other people who have been doign this for a minute.
and I rarely do this mainly because I haven't been exploring and developing electronic music as much in the last few months.. I've been working on a project that involves a broader range of influences/styles.. but the stuff I'm putting on the mikro12 comp is some of the more elec. stuff I did 2003/2004

i liked it. not exactly the most eventful track i've ever heard, but it had a nice feel to it. and, if it's used like you said, to set a mood for a more diverse work, i think it could be very effective.
however, your attitude is shitty enough to where i'll probably not listen to any more of your stuff unless it gets rave reviews.

it's hard to communicate tone through text.. but I was really offering some inocuous advice for people who are giving their thoughts on the work of someone who might take what they do quite seriously. really! I wasn't being/defensive or arrogant. I liked getting all the comments and I understood and appreciate the negative ones.. of course it is boring after awhile.. I'm obviously already aware of that and addressing it. that critique is more and more meaningful the farther along in the development of the track you are when you present it to people.. I'm not saying this just for me .. I'm commenting on something I've noticed for awhile and explaining why working another angle is more helpful.
by the way the 'beautiful. interesting. boring. hopefully the final version will be better.' comment was hilarious.
so what I'm saying is that the people here are pretty much expert in this genre and music in general and when testing out a track, it's good to run it thru the xlt. gauntlet (though I've heard watmm is/was(?) much more unwelcoming..) before it's played for others.. so it would be great to get the RIGHT kind of evaluation.. not a remix ,nahmean?
