the most obvious one i noticed is that most of it sounds
much more melancholic, depressive, dark..

is it just me?

I think it's just you tolstoyed. You're in the crushing grip
of a depression so vast you cannot even see it. Get
professional help. Or beer.

train, bus? i dunno you tell me.
i think tolstoyed wasn't implying any "genres", just music
in general.

affects the way i get music.

sorry, i just thought that music in general is too broad to
make a statement like that. of course someone's perceptions
about music can and probably will change over the course of
their life...

i haven't noticed any overall changes except in production
values and technology. commercial music is still basically
the same as it was fifty years ago, the avant-garde stuff is
still perpetually new.

a lot of people said that the early 90's was a dark and
serious time for mainstream music.

it's definetly gone in a weird genre...i had that feeling a
few months ago.
like, why is everyone starting to use fiel recordings in
music...don't they have any inspiration whatsoever.

i use field recordings in and as music and i love to hear
them. it's one of those things that borders on-non music,
so i understand why many people wouldn't get it. but it's
using sound in an artistic way that can have the same impact
as a musical piece. it's great to listen to.

i agree partly..but i think non-depressing good music was
easier to find back then, than it is today. out of 100 new
albums i've heard this year, there's probably like 5 that
were good and not melancholic or depressing. hmm

yeah i agree, but some artists just put unprocessed
fieldrecordings ...so it's starts to sound shitty.

i disagree... music is in constant flux... but i don't think
that one could attribute an overall shift into melancholy or
anything... if you think that you just haven't heard the
dark underbelly of the 80's... shit is it ever
frightening...

and i would also say that a lot of melancholic music feels
pleasant, because i find it beautiful... it's tough to
describe with words because they've been oriented in such a
manner that you can't really describe certain things without
sounding like you are contradicting yourself...

it's not that i don't find it beautiful..it's just that it
doesn't help me getting out of this mood im in in the last
couple of years..
i like it a lot infact, but maybe it's time to get some
music that would actually sound good and be non
depressing..

maybe i should just get my old 80's tapes out..

all that 80's style is a bit too weird to me...it's not here
it's not there.
it's actually very unique, but it doesn't appeal to me cos
of it's gay-ish sound.
and those reverberated roland toms..jesus

hey Goran, you should check out Ariel Pink's Haunted
Grafitti

the Doldrums

he's this crazy dude who the Animal Collective discovered
while they were on tour... really bizarre pop that sounds
super super lo-fi due to all the filtration it's gone
through... i think he actually makes a lot of the bass lines
just by beat-boxing... really really uplifting fun pop
though... and it's brand new (despite sounding like it's a
tape someone found inside their chesterfield in the basement
circa 1979)

pitchfork panned the shit out of it... but they are just
being silly

One thing for sure is that in the last 15 years, PRODUCTION
has fucking increased on every aspect of music. Really
these days with all the h/s processing, they can make
anything sound like a potential pop top40 easily.

That was 1989. Minni Vanilli ruled the earth. New Kids on
the Block. "Soldier of Love" by Donny Osmond FFS!!!! Now
look these days how producers have mastered the art of
compression. That bass just BOOMS, those drums just CLICK
and the high-ends just feel natural, not flat. Even in
Country music!!! I'm not even talking about electronic
music 15 years ago, that's too easy :)

recommend everyone 'good day' by freeform (track 2 off late
surfaces). gives a boost, great for a morning listening.

Nothing is more depressing that early 1915 era folk.

What about the stuff that was comming out in the depression
era?

I have a jazz album from the 1940's that is more depressing
than anything I hear being put out nowadays.

The Ink Spots produced music during the 20's that was all
about suicide over lost girlfriends and wives.

No. I think music has gotten less depressing. Its definately
gotten more well produced. It also has less soul.

hey thats a great idea, lets cheer up, i know, what will
cheer us up, some bronski beat! theres also this other group
called joy division, they are a barrel of laughs. not but
seriously, the new team doyobi is not depressing in any way,
its actually pretty good, i just got into it, and usually i
am a sucker for the dark emotional stuff, and actually like
that kind of stuff, but doyobi kicks some arse.
