IGN gave this game a 9.9. I believe that's the highest
score they've given a game in a half a decade. Game of the
year? Halo 2, Metal Gear Solid 3 and Half Life 2 have their
work cut out for them (Ninja Gaiden is MY game of the year
so far).

To be fair, Gamespot only gave it a 9.6. WEAK. But the only
game that scored higher than it in the last two years was
Metroid Prime.

Considering what's on the horizon and what's already passed,
this is surely the best year in video game history.

So who has San Andreas and what do you think of it so far? I
won't have it for a couple of days yet, I always have to
wait for it to ship to my weird island, in the middle of the
Atlantic.I'm jealous of anyone who's dug into it already. I
hear it's mind bogglingly massive, and I haven't seen ANYONE
disapointed by it yet.

well to be honest i remember GTA 1 , and i know it wad
addictable as hell, then version 2 came out as a shit, and 3
- but only for those with speed machines. in fact, i can say
that part 3 is shit too, too much effects instead of logic
and thinking.

im sorry, but nowadays ppl want games to look good and
thats all, where are the times of settlers 1 ? eh..

to prove the fact i just pointed, i say - check all games
list from past 3 years - check what games are most highly
rated - FTP's, FPP's.. shit.

Someone I know was dissapointed with it, granted, his
argument was 'its just vice city in a new setting and some
new stuff'.

What did he think it was going to be?

Regardless I was thinking of buying a PS2 just for this
game, but thought, nah, I'm gonna wait for the PC version
considering Half-Life 2 and Vampire: Bloodlines will be out
soon for me to play.

Blockhead McGee! GTA San Andreas, out of all the
upcoming/current blockbusters, is the one MOST bent towards
gameplay and depth, not flash and technology. This game does
not look great, merely good. But it will supply 100-150
hours of nonstop sharp gameplay. Yes. Take your sneers and
jeers elsewhere, bub. THIS is gaming at its purest.

I rented it from Blockbuster a couple of hours ago, and I am
not disapointed. Oh fuck no. Oh fuck whee. I can already see
that the possibilities are ENDLESS. And not in that boring
MMORPG way, either. What a fucking game.

The soundtrack is just cathartic.

Yes. Everything I wanted to do in Vice City, I can now do.
IE, swing the camera around manually, have a dependable
targeting system, ride a fucking pedal bike (that first
''mission'' is so sweet), climb over fences and ledges,
climb walls and pull myself up, sneak up on and sneak BY
people (L3 is a stealth mode), swim (haven't done it yet),
go to the barber and get an afro and handlebar mustache (I
couldn't pass it up), block punches, change your entire
wardrobe at home base... little things that go a long way
when you're actually DOING them all.

The ''level gaining'' is also a masterstroke. I'm going to
make ''sex appeal'' my main focus. Right now the ladies are
making disparaging comments, but later on, they'll want me.
No... they'll NEED me.

The environment and atmosphere is also really convincing. I
wasn't sure about the gangsta theme but now now I'm a
believer. Aesthetically, the interiors of the buildings are
much more detailed. The pizza place looks great, shiny
floors, bustling with people, not like the blocky, low-res
stuff in Vice. How they fit this all onto one disc, I don't
know.

I'm like 0.0001% through the game, and GTA games only get 10
times better. Probably even moreso now that I have so much
control over everything. And you haven't really lived until
you've torn through a Ghetto guns blazin' in a Ferrari to
Soundgarden's Rusty Cage.

The only thing missing is a Rape Button.

Maybe the game of the generation so far. Certainly has more
''game'' than any other game. IGN was right... what the fuck
CAN'T you do?

Just as an anecdote to demonstate why it's SO fun and
rewarding and deep-

I couldn't beat that mission where you have to chase Freddie
on the bike! I kept hitting shit and falling off, and I
couldn't keep up with him long enough to kill him.

So what I did was... prepare. I stole a motorbike from some
kid and drove around Los Santos, making jumps, going as fast
as possible, doing tricks, etc. Why? Because it builds up
your bike talents, which lets you withstand more violent
crashes without falling off, and increases your handling
ability and speed. The more you drive and do, the better CJ
gets with a particular vehicle.

Brilliant. Not only did that hour I spend driving around
town yield some great results (all those tricks, finding
some secrets and some new places to go, seeing the GIGANTIC
first city), but it also gives a real sense of
accomplishment and advancement. It's just like real life...
you drive around on a bike long enough, and you're going to
get better. My character got a lot better, and I whopped
that mission's ass.

The great thing is, while you're gaining these abilities and
working up your stats, you're accomplishing and finding so
much other shit, so it's never monotonous or boring. It's
not like an RPG where you just kill kill kill to gain levels
and see nothing new until you decide to STOP gaining levels
and advance.

Another important point (for me, since I'm pretty poor at
this game)... swimming. Instead of instant death when you
accidentally careen into a lake in the middle of an intense
chase, you stay alive now. And that's so fucking useful. I
died way too often at the worst possible times in Vice City
because Tommy was made of lead.

I love the tie in's. I wont post spoilers for ophie but keep
an eye open in catalina's missions!

You can pimp hoes in this game!!! Incite gang wars to battle
over turf. The missions are difficult and varied. I actually
think the graphics have improved. Steal a banshee and tell
me they didnt!

The ability to customize cars. Fantastic!

I give this a 10/10 pandas. Now obviously i am a fan of the
series but let me state, after following the development of
this game i am aware of things they left out or didnt
include. I am aware of shortcomings in this game and things
that could be better.

That said, this game still exceeded my expectations and
truly represented the era it takes place in, interlaced with
Rockstar's special sarcastic humor!

Lovely!

Yeah, the graphics are definitely improved, though it's
subtle. The cars have more polygons, the textures on
people's clothes are better, etc. Too bad there's no
progressive scan, though. It's a good looking game, but I
can't say the graphics are all that impressive, heh.
Everything else is out of control, though.

One of the coolest things about the game are the drives
between cities, the ''countryside'' is pretty neat. Wooded
backroads, campsites, cabins, the huge freeway with all
those complex ramps, looking back at the city as you zoom
out... it was there that the scope of the game hit me. And I
haven't even made it to the second city, yet! The fact that
there's three of them is pretty exciting.

And I pulled off the fucking craziest jump ever off of one
of those hiking trail hills out in the country. I hit a dirt
mound, flew about 400 feet, landed on the top of a huge
truck, ricochetted off it, and landed near the beach.

As someone who has been a fan of the series (on PC) since

you think I should buy a PS2 in order to play it now/ will I
be able to tolerate the mediocre graphics?

I do. I think that the experience provided by this game is
worth it alone. It creates a realistic believable enviroment
for you. Plus you will have to wait for PS3 for the next
installment. :)

Ophie, how far are you? The last mission i completed was
where you meet and race with Wu Zi Mu. The race following
that is tougher than anything. I had to quit playing last
night because of the difficulty of that race.

Well I would say resolution isn't worth waiting all that
time for, it's still the same blocky characters and simple
architecture. I'd say play it now while it's still shit hot!
It's not a bad looking game by any means, just not
breathtaking. Overall, this game easily kills Vice City in
every concievable way. Undoubtedly the best GTA ever.

Virgil- I'm not very far into it, I've been moving forward
verrrrry deliberately, kinda of padding my stats and seeing
the town. Going to the gym a lot, and I've just spent HOURS
building up my bike stats to the max. I'm still in the
Smoke/Ryder missions, heh... so I'm pretty early into.
Having too much fun to move the story forward too much right
now, but I'm looking forward to getting the story rollin'.

I'm one tough motherfucker. Maximum muscle and stamina stats
and all that, a cowboy hat and cowboy boots, an eye patch,
expensive gold watch and necklace, etc. Nobody fucks with
me.

I got my copy today, chilled for 3 hours in San Andreas, and
i have to say that the bmx is so cool. I played some
basketball and did a few drive-by's. The way life should be.

i've been playing at my friend's house. i really like the
drive-by aspect. i'm not as excited about the home invasion
stuff as i thought i would be. but i think it's because i
have to get used to the controls again!

this is the first time I play a game on the PS2
I now can say that playing a game on the pc is much more
comfertable imo, not only because there are more buttons
available, but also because the mouse is much better
controlable than that little joystick on the PS2

and besides that..the quality of the graphics is much
higher, sometimes it happen that a building still has to be
finished while your standing in front of it...

can´t wait untill the pc version leaks

still very addictive tho ;)
