Your record collection order?

offline pf from Finland on 2004-10-04 03:57 [#01352325]

Is your record collection in order? I find myself quite
obsessed that the records need to be in order. and from left
to right in the order that on the left is the artist older
album, on the right is the latest album.

what is your style?

Very much the same. Albums separate too :s

divided by different genres, then albums by each artist in
chronological order, left to right, burnt cds always come
last, no matter where in time they fit.

vinyl is divided by 12" ---> albums, and thereafter in
genres, artists, chronological releases and such.

however, the vinyl is kind of messy right now, 'cause there
have been some putting in and out without my supervision...

In order by how they sound... hardcore, leads to glitch,
leads to ambient, leads to downtempo, leads to hiphop, leads
to rap.

I know.. and then I can catalogue their body-parts, organize
them in order from left to right in my freezer, depending on
what function the body parts have; muscle-groups ---> nerve
centres.

I've punched my lil bro many times because he listens to
some of the cd's and the fuck ups the order. Some special
releases dont sometimes look nice in the row, like radiohead
amnesiac book release, dont know where to put it..

I'm tempted to do it autobiographically like the bloke in
High Fidelity.

neetta, that makes you a bad person..

my vinyl's are not really in no orders, because i have like
5, so no point.

Well 60 is OK. It's easier to search through 60 out of order
than it is when you have over 500. I've seen bigger
collections than mine too and they weren't ordered :s

I used to sort my tapes collection around five years ago, or
more. now I have mostly mp3s. If i liked something very
much, i may want to have it on cd, and put them simply in
cylinder boxes, in which the cdrs are sold. No order.

I have very few cds with polygraphy, not more than five, and
only two are real releases. Others are just pirate copies.

Your recordbag has 8 items, your collection can't be THAT
messy?

Me: Alphabetical only.

though the other day these little mushrooms someone put in

from white all the way to black... i was a really strange
urge. looks quite good actually.

Most recently listened to on top of the ever-growing pile by
my monitor. Other than that no order at all. I've lost so
many cds and cases because of my lack of organizational
skills :-/

offline vlari from beyond the valley of the LOLs on 2004-10-04 07:14 [#01352495]

My records are organized by:
a) Labels (warp,rephlex & skam stuff, ordered by cat#)
b) Records related to a) (Remixes and other stuff)
c) Norwegian releases
d) Collections of artists/bands (ordered by favourites)
e) Artists/bands for which I only have one album
f) Collections
g) Soundtracks
h) Singles (ordered chronological)

The same method is applied for both cds and vinyl. Tapes,
dvd's and md's related to a) have the privilege of sharing
shelfspace with the cds.

It's a tough system to decipher for people other than me, so
it follows that only I am to be allowed to get the records,
if they are requested. This rarely happens btw. I have
renounced the right to play music at parties.

That is good. But what do you do when people are actually
bringing (poor) music to your place? That happens to me all
the time ("you don't have any party-music, Morten, can I put
on some Madonna?").
How many records do you have, and how do you store them?

I have cd towers from Ikea. With many rooms. That means I
have to move around all the stuff, when I buy an "A"-artist.
Any good electronica on "ÆØÅ"?

haha. people who have inspected my collection always say
they don't know half of what's there. the girl i lived with
had plenty of "party music" on her iBook, so they left my
room and continued to listen to the ketchup song...

i have not done an official count, but i have estimated my
collection to contain something over 1000cds, and 600-700
pieces of vinyl.

storage is a problem, cause i find the IKEA cdtowers to be
unflexible in dealing with the various covers, the SMAK cd
wallet for example. i use a bookshelf which was part of the
furniture in my flat, and customize the shelfspace where
needed. i wonder what to do when it's full. i think it only
has about 10cm left. i have the same problem now with my
vinyl-unit.
