Equipment used for SAW II

Hi

I really love the sound of selected ambient works vol II
By far my favorite aphex twin / electronic album ever.
I am posting this thread not with the goal to create the
same music or the same sounds, but to get in the right
direction and help others find their right sound.
Equipment does matter a lot in my opinion.

Think I also know which synthesizer was mainly used for SAW
II: the Yamaha CS-80 analogue monster.
I clearly recognise its sound and playing style.
- it's very organic brassy sound, crazy ring mod, polyphonic
aftertouch, polyphonic pitch bend (in sustain 1 mode do a
long sustain and only the notes you keep pressed down will
pitch bend with the slider), etc
I never read anywhere before that the CS80 was used and I've
searched for info for years so this is probably the first
time this is written.
Hope it will help the people looking to make music in this
direction.

Anybody else have tips on which equipment was used?
Think also the korg ms-20, I love it, especially it's
external input amp and filters, think it was used as well.
Do you know which delays? Was it the tc2290?
Which reverb? Quantec? EMT 140 or 251? Also hear a spring in
there, Great British Spring Reverb?
Which compressor?
Also think it was recorded on tape.

Was thinking about keeping this kind of info to myself
(specially the cs-80) took me a long time and a lot of
analogue equipment to find the right sound.
Probably the same for other people here who have good tips,
but hey, if this helps the right people to make amazing
music you yourself will want to listen to then it's worth
while i think and outweighs the fear of people copying your
music (also think aphex twin should just publish his
equipment list and production methods, bad commercially but
good for music).

he did a lot of it using tape to tape cassette recorders and
copied most of the sounds from other records

so was what is love by haddaway. that's just too much of a
co-incidence to be a co-incidence.

if you listen to 'on' and 'what is love' they both loosely
have the same chord structure, just at different speeds

Yeah right, I have seen loads of hands that make electronic
sounds...the only ones I can think of at the moment are
Robocops and Johnny 5...certainly not Aphex Twin. Learn
about stuff before you type.

You can play "on" on the black keys of a keyboard, like I
know what I am talking about, BUT IT's TRUE. I don't know
how to play "Woohohohowowowowhat is love", however, on the
black keys or not.

i know my stuff
he probably didn't have midi on his cs-80
no cv and gate inputs
how else are you going to play it

now i'm talking about saw II, not "on" or any other record

would be ostresized.

It's ok, I'm not proud, it's the only song i can play on a
keyboard.

Didn't Dickie do all of SAW II in his sleep whilst lucid
dreaming, he wouldn't be able to tell you HIMSELF what he
used to record it.

forward' when judged correctly

mdv. he owns an mks-80 jupiter. An all analogue polyphonic
rack. And so do I. I think a lot of ab2 was done with an
mks. Defintely the pads in sos' Audax Powder. Definetly the
bass in the windowlicker video, too.

HAHAHAHAHA
I'm an idiot!!
really...
but sometimes i have my moments ;)

It's not a cs-80 at all it could not be further away!
I know now 100% sure what it is.
It all makes sense now.
Nobody else will ever guess although once you know it's
obvious..

check the 'new aphex release seriously' thread.

it has something about how richard was a trader at some
synth website. maybe if you found that it would list some
gear he has.

I know the analogue heaven mailing list.
and it's not on there
it's not on anywhere.
He probably also didn't use this synth for his analord
stuff, because the synth that gives saw II it's sound is
100% DIGITAL!
hahahahahahahaha
really!

Absynth.
Load up some a pad patch.
Hold down single black keys.
That's it.

Chris Sattinger interviewed him and said that the obrehiem
matrix 1000 presets were used, too. I would believe a dx7
,too.
And an akai sampler. I think he did a lot of sequencing on
an atari, too. Since there was jack shit for macs. Still is,
btw.
