dont you think though that terrorist is the new
"communist", or to call someone a terrorist implies that
they are in some way demonized? its like a new McCarthyism
for the 00s, i love my country but sometimes we do some f'ed
up stuff.

very true. it's like a witch hunt. call someone a terrorist
and he's everybody's enemy without any form of judgement.
gotta be very careful with the use of this word.

Great posts, guys!

As for mrgy's last post, I have to disagree. While justice
is supposed to be blind, judges give their "opinion" all the
time. Well, it's not really an opinion.....more of a "the
moral of the story is...." sort of thing.

Eh, don't know where I'm going with this but I'll stop here
:)

Qrter,

"indeed.

a judge should give sentence, not whip out a speech.

showcase trial, anyone?"

How was this a showcase trial? No one has heard a damn
thing about it.... And judges are supposed to "whip out a
speech."

yann_g, what I meant by "solderis attacking soldiers" is
that in the time of war, when two armies are discretely
fighting each other....usually under the Geneva convention
terms. Where, for the most part, a soldier can die with
pride knowing he was fighting for his freedom. I can't say
the same about a "terrorist" because I am not one.

do you think american soldiers are fighting for their
freedom? they're fighting for oil. of course they're not to
blame for that (well some are i guess). american oil
companies and the government are responsible for the death
of innocent americans and iraqis.

you all are speaking of freedom but i don't think the
american *people* is that free. low access to information,
media is controlled by either the government or corporates
which usually go hand in hand anyway. the american media is
probly the most manipulated media in rich countries. this
freedom thing doesn't look any real from an outside point of
view, i'm very worried about americans and how the world is
going...

i knew he was sentenced, but generally people didnt care
because it wasnt felt as a threat because the guy was funny
not being able to set the thing of and he looked like kramer
imo.
the judge tried to change this apparantly with his terrorism
speech. normally you dont get to know these speeches because
the paper just states the sentence. i think such a speech
should be more applied to the sentenced and no
generalization.
i hate the speech altogether. it exemplary for the american
arrogance. you'd better try and understand your adversary to
come to a solution instead of speaking this empty rethoric.
im pretty pissed about it.

i agree, with you, but people are in love with their way of
life in america, and who wouldnt be for any country where
war has not raged for the past 50 years or so, think of the
life of an iraqi, war has been in their country for as long
as i have been alive, (at least that). i have no idea what
someone my age has been through or seen in there life, it is
pretty easy for me to say that he hates the fact that i am
"free", in actuality he hates that my elected officials have
waged war on his country for decades. he has never had a
chance to enjoy life.

Hmm, the US declared an illegal war on Iraq, which is
basically a terrorist act.
The US fly on bombing missions under the cover of darkness
and blow up civilians (fuck if they say it's accidental or
not), oddly sounds like a terrorist act to me.
US soldiers ignore the Geneva convention and resort to
terrorist style methods of interogation.
The US commander in chief on more than one occassion has
asked for Gods help in defeating their enemies.

America has so much in common with al queda you would have
thought they could be best friends (again).

why would he hate the fact that you're free? why would he
even think you're free? most iraqis worshipped saddam! why
would they have wanted something else? this "hate freedom"
thing is bullshit, really! it's just a pointless thing
created in order to give americans an easy way to think the
gov is in the right position, and can legitimely do what
they do. it's manipulation, nothing else.

This shoe bomber, 9/11, the school in Russia, these are just
recent examples of how people can commit any act as long as
it's justified in their minds. It's nothing new. For the
entire history of man, people have used the 'By any means
necessary' method to defend their ideology. Until the whole
world adopts a common standard for human behavior, we're all
doomed.

Osama's true hope is the implementation of Sharia law in all
of the Middle East. He has said America's presence and
dealings with their governments has westernized the
peninsula and this was his primary complaint. Sadly, oil
completely controls the worlds economy. I must agree,
though, We are no saints. Our government meddles. We sell
arms to waring countries. We goad them on, we bully, but I
realize if Osama (or someone like him) controlled all of the
middle east's oil supply the world could experience a full
on depression. Thus, human folly ensues. Ever thought
Europe let's America do their dirty work? Europe's standard
of living is practically just as high as America's. That's
no accident. It's fully in Europe's capability to be a
raping and pillaging continent. Especially the Brits.

i agree with this to, the us gets a bad rap (to a certain
degree), we might be the bad guy to the rest of the world,
but if you live in a nation were war has not been raging in
some time, your nation's hands are just as dirty as ours, at
some point you have benefitted from the raping of the middle
east.
well except for france, you guys do your own thing.

i think one important point that has or ought to have been
made... (i think it's been made, but i can't be arsed to
check now) is that if Richard Reid was truly a soldier, and
not a terrorist he would not be attacking civilians on a
plane... that makes no sense and regardless about how you
feel about the parties involved, i have no idea how such an
act can be condoned... i don't want to have to experience
that sort of fear when i fly on a plane and i don't think
anybody should have to... as people in a position where we
are at ease enough to consider the situation a little more
cool-headedly than might others, we ought to at least
attempt to understand what motivates a person to do
something like this... and i mean really, not just some
storybook answer... but that doesn't mean that we have to
condone it... of course there are plenty of issues which
extend from all of this, and cloud it considerably... for
example, who will fight for the rights of people who feel
they and their people have been so disenfranchised that they
would rather kill themselves if it can better the lives of
their people? i'm sure a lot of these terrorists would claim
that there is no flag in the world under which they could
fight... furthermore, the attention that their cause would
gain if they decided instead to, say, attack an american
military installation, (which would likely result in minimal
damage, and minimal casualties on the American side), would
be considerably less than that which they gain in this
manner...

that said... this is precisely, why Mike should be happy and
proud of much of what the judge said, because the judge
deflated Reid's status as a terrorist rather than inflating
it... he made it clear that such acts do not merit the sort
of attention and the concern that they have received in the
past... i know this sounds a bit off, but the idea is--and
it's my hope that the judge recognizes this--that we must
devote more time to listening to those who would be civil,
desperate though they may be...

offline DeadEight from vancouver (Canada) on 2004-09-17 12:19 [#01337942]

...this is something that hasn't really occurred yet... we
don't give a shit about protestors or their demands, until
they are threatening our lives... which, of course, is
absolutely ridiculous when you consider the lengths to which
people on the other side have been harmed so that we as
Westerners might be extended some trvial convenience... in
the grand scheme of things, perhaps a degree of eye for eye
was necessary in order to make us more aware of our
responsibilities in the world... it's our duty now to be
"the bigger man", so to speak, and listen, rather than
perpetuate what could become and endless war of attrition on
a global scale... i'm not worried about my house being
bombed... but i am worried about the value of the life i
would lead, should preventative measures be put in place to
stifle further threats without any sort of negotiation or
discourse...

"How was this a showcase trial? No one has heard a damn
thing about it.... And judges are supposed to "whip out a

if you had not heard about this before, now you do - the way
it has come to your attention is what makes it a showcase
trial: it became just that immediately at the point when
that judge started faffing on about 'freedom', 'hating
freedom', etc.

he is NOT supposed to make a speech - he is supposed to pass
a sentence, not read out a column.

like mrgypsum already said, the rest is just that man's
opinion - he should not use his position to vent it, it goes
directly against the whole idea of a fair and equal justice
system. it does instantly turn into cheap rhetoric.
