[Health] Lung Collapse

I listen to loud music quite often (bass wise, upwards of
130-145+ dBs in my car).

My buddies forwarded me this link today, very interesting.

http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=571&e=5&u...

I've had my lung collapse twice now, over the past year and
a 1/2. Pneumothoraxs are a fucking BITCH, and that chest
tube hurts like nothing I've ever felt before.

Not to mention the fact I could hardly breath.....

Wow, very interesting article..... : /

Time to sell the subwoofers.

it rocks when music is so good that it actually kills you

130-145db bass?

wasnt >120 @ 1kHz supposed to damage hearing? i dont imagine
that being good for you. ooooooooooh wait it isnt!

I hope all the twats that go round in their cars with the
bass a-thumpin, upsetting old people, pets and children, end
up dying, blue in the face, trying to breathe through a
fucking straw.

bass is overrated

i hate it when someone gets a hi-fi and wacks all the bass
high up

whats the point?

t's probably a good idea, according to Noppen, to stand back
from the speakers at concerts and clubs and to ease up on
that car-stereo bass. It might also save your hearing, he
added.

people are stupid

145db is fucking stupid for constant listening. You can't
even properly hear music at that level.

Is lung collapse caused by frequencies lower/louder than
that of the theoretical brown-tone?

its probably 30 or 40 dB higher than the actual level anyway

Sigh, thanks for the support dog_belch.

Pfft.

You and your generalizations....I don't go blasting my music
with windows down at night.

Usually if the windows are down and im playing it loud, it's
on a back road.

Chill the fuk out....Sheesh!

"wasnt >120 @ 1kHz"

Big difference between 1KHz and 30Hz.

JAroen - A brown note/tone is a theoretically possible sound
which would cause one's bowels to resonate at that
particular frequency...

Idle Interloper,

Spontaneous Pneumothroax (which is what I've had 2 of now)
is where (in laymans terms) .. basically you get a hole in
your lung and it seeps out air (pressure mismatch) between
the inside of your lung and the air in your chest cavity.

You want to talk about being scared : /

offline elusive from detroit (United States) on 2004-09-02 13:41 [#01321799]
Points: 18368 Status: Lurker | Show recordbag

And guys,

135dBs at 25Hz is NOT the same (even remotely) as 135dBs at
45-55Hz.

Wish you could understand this ..... sigh, ignorance.

Every object has a resonate freq. 12Hz-ish at 110dBs should
give yer internals some .... odd feelings

Ignorance, you're the only one keep going into hospital
because of listening to music too loudly. That's being
ignorant.

Points: 18368 Status: Lurker | Show recordbag

This article isn't saying that loud bass will cause your
lungs to collapse.

Guys, comon.

I just thought it was odd.

You know, I expect bass could easily be a catalyst to a
pneumothorax.

offline idle interloper on 2004-09-02 13:47 [#01321806]
Points: 418 Status: Lurker

elusive

I'm not talking about being scared, but that doesn't at all
sound pleasurable.

Maybe just try listening music of a comparable volume on
headphones, that way you will only puncture your eardrums
and air can seep our of your head instead. Seems like
viable alternative since we can all continue to live after
becoming deaf, but as we all know, a lung is a bit more
crucial. But I suppose it is illegal to listen to headphones
while driving.

offline idle interloper on 2004-09-02 13:48 [#01321807]
Points: 418 Status: Lurker

Crud. That should have read "...try listening to
music..."

offline elusive from detroit (United States) on 2004-09-02 13:49 [#01321808]
Points: 18368 Status: Lurker | Show recordbag

Dog, the article doesn't say loud music is directely
proportional to a spontaneous pneumothorax.

Trust me, I've been through it. It's a condition and
something you are born with (little cist-like things,
blisters on your lung) and when you get to yer early 20s or
late teens, they start to pop.

Sometimes they will pop and leave a tear.

So go re-read the article. They are just saying that it is
possible that pressure from sound waves can cause this.

I ain't judgin, yo. Just saying that if i listened to music
at that level, i don't think i'd even enjoy it, not
permitting health problems. I already get a high-pitched
whine from listening to headphones too loud when i'm
drunked, i don't want bass-related lung collapse. Hyper-loud
is only good for gigs.

4 "sound related" cases out of, what, tens of thousands of
cases a year?

Ummm, ok? Sheesh, so offensive on something I'm sure most

and? if the intensity at the 200-2KHz level is only a factor
10^-4 of the deep bass level its still moronic, and i
couldnt care less if your liver launches itself out of your

:)

JAor3n ...

There hasn't been any scientific knowledge about bass/sound
and my condition until this article.

And even then, it's only 4 people out of the many times it
happens a year.

It just came out TODAY, but I defintely will keep it in the
back of my head when driving now.

But thanks :)

work is hell today, sorry again.....

I read this a couple of days ago on the bbc website so it
didn't, actually, come out today. I didn't bother to mention
it because I knew laughing boy here would do it himself. I
couldn't have anticipated however that the smugphace would
have been a victim of it. Perhaps there is a god after all.

the threshold of pain is 130db. Why would you turn it up to
145db? it wouldn't sound any louder.
The front row of a rock concert is about 120db, so your car
contains the amount of sound 10 times louder than the front
row of a rock concert? K.
