the most accessible autechre is tri repetae. the best
autechre is confield. the phattest autechre is draft 7.30

also, which one you should start with really depends on what
album of afx's you like as well, I would recommend...

tri repetae if you like ICBYD
amber if you like SAW85-92
lp5 if you like Drukqs

it's not their best stuff, but their best stuff is pretty
hardcore inaccessible, so these are good starting points I
think

It's been recommended that those who are new to Autechre
should start from the earliest works and listen their way
across the discography timeline. Tri-Repetae seems to be a
good starting point too, even though it's Autechre's
third(?) LP.

Nah, Incunabula is the best. He's on the right track.
Chiastic Slide's definitely second for me though.

yeah, yesterday i listened to a cd since a long time,
incunabula and i was astounded by the space i heard. so i
dont know wether this was because it was autechre, wether
it's because im trying to make vintage idm and i suck or
it's because it wasnt mp3 (i dont have incunabula on mp3,
but it sounded more spacy than anything i ever heard).
probably all but i prefer to think now mp3 is shit and im
forced to listen to shit the rest of my life because im to
lazy to put cd's in my player and i miss my 5 cd changer.

just encode at the highest quality, the human ear can't tell
the difference between the mp3 and the cd.

I'm encoding with AAC 256 kbps and to my ears its exactly
the same as the cd.

offline pantalaimon from Winterfell (United Kingdom) on 2004-08-07 08:19 [#01297832]
Points: 7090 Status: Lurker | Show recordbag

128 kbps mp3 is horrible though, especially for idm

offline mappatazee from ¨y¨z¨| (Burkina Faso) on 2004-08-07 09:22 [#01297837]
Points: 14294 Status: Lurker | Followup to pantalaimon: #01297832

even at 320 kbps, play one short part over and over with the
cd, then play the same short part over and over with the
mp3, you will notice a difference.

offline pantalaimon from Winterfell (United Kingdom) on 2004-08-07 09:36 [#01297839]

i don't know, i read the results of some research into the
quality of coding sound by different mp3 encoders and they
concluded that 256kbps in 'most' cases sounds identical,
only a few songs needed to be 360 kbps in order to be
identical.

I've tried it myself and i can't tell any difference between
AAC 256 kbps and the original cd. But then again AAC is a
better encoder than MP3.

i know im late, but heres my take on it.

start off with incunabula, and work your way up, slowly,
let each autechre era sink into you, i stayed on
envane/chiastic/cichlisuite/peel 1 for a whole month, and
now im really digging the latest stuff. dont miss out on the
eps, their superb.
