nevermind was the most important record i had when i was first getting into music - it changed all my perceptions. i can't listen to it now, because i'm totally sick of it - i listened to it so many times when i was younger, i wore out the cd. but i think it still deserves the credit it gets as one of the best mainstream rock albums ever.

i haven't heard loveless yet, but since so many people love it, i ordered the cd yesterday...

I never listened to Nirvana when they were popular as I rejected everything that was popular out of hand as being shit- now I enjoy them very much and I think the unplugged album is fab and Kurt has a very soulful voice that is nowhere to be found in anything by MBV.

i only recently realized that Tones on Tail was an offshoot of Bauhaus... i really do like what i've heard of bauhaus... Bela Lugosi's dead is a sweet song... very sweet...

people talk about how the two albums in question aren't that similar, and i don't think that's the point of zaphod's poll... they are both heavily influential albums, that came out at around the exact same time... so play along and answer the questions sillies... say the word "insecticide" and i'll e-punch your teeth out :P

i think i prefer Loveless... but it's a tough call
i'd also like to give a shout out to a great shoegaze record that was influenced by it... the Lilys -Eccsame the Photon Band
... anyone heard this one? it's divine...

yeah that song is great... i think my personal fave is the Turtle that Died Before Knowing... i'd be curious to hear some more shoegazer recommendations... i kind of get every once and a while, but i always run into crap too quickly... i know there must be some good ones that i haven't heard yet though...

yeah, most of it is crap. i'm sure you've heard ride, catherine wheel, slowdive. plus theres lush, which is one of the few shoegazer bands that seemed to put out music way after that scene had died.

here's a few of my favorites off the top of my head. most of them are pretty well-known though.

flying saucer attack - s/t lush - gala mercury rev - yerself is steam pale saints - comforts of madness ride - nowhere spacemen 3 - perfect prescription

now that i've heard loveless, i think about the smashing pumpkins in a whole new light. :)

this album strikes me as being closer to ambient than rock. nevermind was a loud, heavy pop/rock album, and despite the glossy sound, it definitely had teeth. loveless has the most unique rock album production i've ever heard, and probably one of the most brilliantly-produced.

the guitars are the focus of the mix, but they are stripped of the attack you usually hear, and it sounds kind of ambient and just leaves you with the melodies and harmonics. great idea - great sound.

so anyway, i'm very impressed with this album, and i like it a lot, but it doesn't blow my mind the way nevermind did when i was younger (even though nevermind is all ripoffs of pixies and killing joke songs). and i think even if i had heard loveless back then (before i knew better), i would have had the same reaction, because what i loved about nirvana was the sheer intensity - the raw, punk rock element.

Loveless, of course. I like Nirvana, but Nevermind was produced by Butch Vig: boo.

i have never gotten into my bloody valentine, so i am saying nevermind by default, but, and stop me if everyone has heard this, slint's spiderland is more influential than anything by either band.

One of my guilty pleasures is Vig's production on the first Garbage album... but I'm not guilty about it, because I genuinely think it's wicked.

Vig seems like such a douchebag, though.
