So in a week me an the missus are going to be landing in
Madrid.

We have no particular plans - just gonna wanter around and
see where we end up. Well definitely I want to see the
Prado. And I understand Toledo is a must see.

Any suggestions what else is a must see?

near madrid MUST go places:

Toledo (an hour to the south)
Segovia (an hour and a half to the north west)

apart from this I would go to:

Barcelona (north east)
Granada (south in andaluzia)
San sebastian (donosti) (north of spain)

there are thousands of other beautiful places, but those
would be my recomendations as first choice

40 degrees! Sounds great - hasn't been hot enough in
Montreal this year. We'll be sweating it out for two weeks
in Spain. Doesn't make sense to go for less time - the plane
tickets cost me both nuts (walnuts if you must know)

qrter: your willainy is vretched!

torquay is nice this time of year. they call it the english
riviera, you know. very classy place. it's not full of
sunburnt middle aged grossly overweight plebs buying
hilarious sexist knobhead postcards eating ice-creams and
hitting their children for not keeping up with them, honest.

Yeah I'm planning on hitting those places... everyone I've
spoken to says not to miss Toledo. Segovia I don't know much
about - will check it out - Granada for sure, I guess it's a
touristy thing but I want to see the Alhambra.

towns but have beautiful downtowns

Places I recommend if you will be travelling around Spain:

San Sebastian
Asturias (Gijon)
Granada
Valencia

If you only have time for day trips you can check out the
castle and Toledo and the Aqueduct at Segovia, thats pretty
much all thats there, but they are pretty fucking awesome.

"many of these towns are ugly in the outside parts of the

Haha, just like Montreal. God-awful ugly suburbs and
industrial areas on the outskirts but the downtown and older
residential areas are pretty. I guess a lot of places are
like that now -

Some quick notes on Spain:

- the women are XXXXHOTTT and walking in the street is like
foreplay. There is this particular smell to Spain in general
and Madrid in particular, like perfumed soap and a hint of
sex funk and old city smell. It's fucking awesome.

- Bad place for vegetarians as the Spanish consider ham to
be a form of vegetable or condiment and put it in
everything. Also you get iceberg lettuce, even in a
vegetarian restaurant. The best meals are tapas here and
there, also bocadillos (sandwich on a roll).

- the Moors produced some of the finest architecture and
decoration in history then the Christians came along and
gunked it up with Las Vegas style ugliness - visiting the
mezquita in Cordoba changed the way I see a lot of things.

- seeing Goya, El Greco and Hieronymus Bosch all under the
same roof fucked with my mind. I stood like 12 inches away
from the Garden of Earthly Delights. Highly recommended.

- even the dogs and babies smoke

The real surprise was the El Greco. In real life it has this
luminous quality that you don't see in prints.

eep ohs: the whole country is a tar pit - I can feel it
drawing me back.

Aye, that can happen. I was never a barnett newman fan until
i saw one in the flesh. I gawped at it for the best part of
20 minutes... i was shaking all over.

Eyyyyyyy Nacmat, what's the good beer in Spain? There was
Cruzcampo all over, which is a raunchy beer kinda like
Canada's own Molson Export, then there was San Miguel which
I gather is based out of the Philippines, and there was lots
of imported stuff like Heineken. Mostly I just ordered
cerveza and let the barkeep or waiter worry about it.

What really slew me was a simple piece by Lucio Fontana at
the Reina Sofia museum - his famous razor slashed canvas.
That's something you have to see in person to get the full
effect - the darkness behind the slashes representing death,
mystery, transcendence - everything we're looking for in
art, usually in a two dimensional illusion on canvas, here
slashed to reveal it as a consensual construction.

It was part of an exhibition of "monochrome" art. They must
have had a blast assembling that collection. Beautiful
understated works that made the viewer work for it.

There was also a simple piece called "madonna" - can't
remember the artist - it was a large deep blue fiberglass
hemisphere that echoed your voice back at you. It said
things about mater/matter, breath as spirit, emergence from
the void... again, not something you can fully appreciate
except in person.
