YOU and your ''deliberate mistakes!'' ArrrrrrrR
I'd say Harry Nilsson. He has his own genre... ''Nilsson''. Or ''Harry'', if you're a good friend of his. He's the only artist that can compete with The Beatles for my love.
I don't know where you'd put Frank Zappa, either... or David Tibet, Al Kooper, a ton of other people. But only Harry deserves his own genre. The others are all predictable in their weirdness.

That ''Nilsson guy'' is dead, since '94... :_-( But Nilsson is everywhere. He's all around us, all the time.
He is/was some sort of bizarre pop genius, John Lennon's best friend and the Beatles' favorite artist in the mid '60s.
Anyway, I consider him to ''not fit in anywhere'' because his music has more personality and pizazz than anything, ever. Totally unpretentious, had nothing to prove to critics or fellow artists, a true individual. You have to like pre-rock and roll music styles and wimpy chamber pop based around strings, pianos, and acoustic guitars, though.

Hmmm... I think the best way to start with Nilsson is a compilation, because-
1- he was eclectic and one album can only show 2% of what he's capable of
2- he had supreme pop sensibility, without sacrificing art. So his ''greatest hits'' packages are both instantly accessible and irresponsibly wicked.
A good one was recently released, picture down below. Missing too much great music, but close enough. My favorite album is Aerial Ballet, though.
See if you like these songs- One, Together, Spaceman, Cuddly Toy, Everybody's Talkin', Mournin' Glory Story, Without You, Without Her, Think About Your Troubles, Me and My Arrow, Good Old Desk.
I will always pimp Harry like mad, my love for him is so deep.

Tricky is ex Massive who are ex Wildbunch. So as far as his "scene" is concerned he has roots in oldschool hip-hop into Trip-Hop to Trip-Hop-Pop.
My point is you should have asked which artists sound the most unique. Because generally when people listen to something, the first thing they try to do is classify it.

"Because generally when people listen to something, the first thing they try to do is classify it."
exactly, that is why im looking for "unclassifiable" artists :)
you gave a pretty good description of tricky's music...i'd add rock and punk to that...but you can't say he belongs to a certain genre/scene...

You cant say that anyone does. I'm thinking at the most base level here.
BoC have said in interviews that they don't listen to a whole lot of modern electronic music, but prefer a wide variety of stuff from Devo to The Incredible String Band. They hardly ever play live or associate with anyone from the IDM scene except AE, because they reccomended them to Skam. So in that sense, its not so easy just to toss them into the IDM category.

Acid Mothers Temple: experimental-psychedelic loopy music.
Captain Beefheart & his Magic Band: connexions with Frank Zappa but much more difficult music, very tiring and whatever-sounding at first listens (some tracks are, like, the guy sings nonsense with no instruments on background - or a band knowing how to play, but making big random-sounding stuff instead, with the singer doing the same, 75% talking 25% singing 50% synchronized 50% non-synchronized with the rest of the music). in fact, i haven't got into it completely yet, but his album "Trout Mask Replica" is considered to be either a masterpiece.
Current 93: somewhat experimental-folk (!) stuff... it's pretty good, really; just not the kind of stuff i'd listen to everyday.
Hoahio: in-between pop, traditional japanese music and experimental.
Isis: actually this could be classified into metal... but i have "Oceanic", and it is full of long beautiful instrumentals, and some tracks like 'Weight' sound like anything but usual metal music... (hm, if i put Isis, i should have put Opeth too!! Opeth is among my favourite bands...)

Naftule's Dream: a blend of klezmer (jewish music), jazz and rock...
Nurse With Wound: "surrealist" music. some sound collages, dark ambient, indescriptible stuff. not always easy! connexions with Coil, but different (you can like one and not the other)...
OOIOO: a side-project by Yoshimi P-We of Boredoms, all-female quartet. half-experimental, half-sunny-easy-poplike music perhaps.
Queen Adreena: i guess you could say it's rock, but almost everything could be classified into "rock"... violent and beautiful, and the female singer has a beautiful voice (Katie Jane Garside) : )
The Residents: these guys make music since 30 years now, and no one knows who they are because they're always dressed as eyeballs in costume. they make conceptual albums about eskimo life, 1-minute-long songs only, completely fucked-up nazi-styled rock'n'roll classics, a "mole trilogy" composed of 6 parts and only three released (not the three first ones though), etc. some sound a bit like fucked-up cartoon music.
