yes they are indie but they don't really fit into any 'scene'. you can't imagine them going on a joint tour with any other bands for example, because there aren't really any like-minded bands. the perennial outsiders.
i don't even like the fall that much. just observing.

Beefheart really isn't that difficult. most people make the mistake to start with "trout mask replica", which although it is probably his best work, is also his most inaccesible. better start with something like "shiny beast" - it has some pretty weird stuff like the wondeful "bat chain puller", but also has a pretty straight forward but beautiful song like "harry irene", on which Van Vliet almost manages to croon..!
Beefheart is one of those things that you have to let wash over you and in most cases suddenly you'll get a grip on it.
I do like his work more than Zappa's - it just sounds grittier, not as slick as Zappa.
