Hi - Cort just told me on SLSK that brian eno created the
microsoft sound effects... is this, in fact, the truth? And
what kind of fee system was employed if this IS fact?

if it is true, i think he would have been given a one off
commission payment. Microsoft would not fall victim of the
arse reaming that they gave IBM

he created the opening sound when windows 95 started up. not

it.

honestly, it wouldn't have been a one off payment -
Microsoft got IBM to sign a legally binding contract so that
Microsoft received a certain amount of money for every PC
that IBM shipped with their Microsoft Basic.

They got millions from IBM, and i don't think IBM were very
happy. Microsoft would be smarter than to pay someone a
royalty for every copy of Windows 95 (or whatever Microsoft
OS) sold. If there was a royalty for every copy sold, the
guy who made the sound(s) would be able to retire his
grandkids before they were born!

I read that he was paid $1million to make the apple chime,
that seems unlikely if he did the microsoft one...

I expect that would have been done under a work-for-hire
contract.

BTW, IBM's big mistake was not to pay Microsoft a fee for
each unit sold - their mistake was to allow Microsoft to
license Dos to other computer hardware manufacturers. At the
time, no one else was making compatible PCs, and I guess IBM
couldn't foresee that someone would reverse-engineer their
BIOS and start making clones.

Sheez, Microsoft didn't even write Dos - they bought it from
someone in Seattle. It was originally called Qdos. Talk
about buy low-sell high.

yeh but the thing that kick started it all was back in the
days of Basic, when IBM did pay Microsoft for every unit
sold

:)

yep, Quick and Dirty Operating System was not coded by M$

:)

That was IBM's fault...Bill Gates wanted to sell the rights
to IBM and IBM refused stating that they beleived there was
no market for home computers...so they suggested that it be
done on a license based agreement. Obviously they didn't
enter into an exclusive licensing agreement because they
didn't find the home market important. The rest is history.

oh right..........

yeh that'd make sense, because at the time IBM were
primarily a mainframe producer, and as you rightfully said,
were not that interested in the home computing market

:) thanks
