kenjutsu is harder, theres no armor, and u use bokkens ( wodden ones ) . kendo is with armour, and the sword is made from bamboo. ( well i use bokken for kata too )

kendo = relatively modern sport/competitive sword fighting with safety gear - as shown above. I've been told its excellent for spirit and focus and i'm sure people who practice it really love it. I used to work with a Spainish guy who did it and i was impressed with his quick-mindedness and clear-headedness which he attributed to practicing Kendo
kenjutsu - practical use of the actual sword in combat. Obviously one doesn't train at full speed with live blades but you practice tehniques that would work for you on a real battlefield against multiple opponents. Unlike Kendo, the goal isn't to compete but to survive.

thats the problem, most poeople treats Kendo as a art for making points on tournaments. for me is like a living way, really, not the points are important. actually, i think that because of competitions the spirit of real martial arts is vanishing.

hyakusen - i understand that kendo isn't really about the competition, but about spirit.
I study kenjutsu, which isn't about killing but about being alive ... like kendo

iaido:
the unsheathing, cutting, removal of blood and resheathing of the sword. Its developed during peacetime as opposed to during the warring periods and is seen as a phyical, mental and spiritual art form.
we study iaijutsu: the practical application of iai.

ok, so explain to me, as I have no clue about this stuff.... when you fight, is alot of it like, traditional moves and stuff, or is there alot of improvisation... how do you react so quickly to where the opponents sword is going?

Cool!
We don't compete by the way. We use bokken, shinai, padded bamboo, iaito (blunted metal swords) for combat techniques, and real swords for practice-cutting. We do this as an extension of unarmed combat (taijustu) along with a dozen or so other traditional weapons and modern warpons.

there is a set of basic moves, positions before and after fight, and such. you train them, but no one sais that if you move a little faster you will die, it all depends on your opponent and stuff. and about that fights - when you know basic techniques you can see what the opponent is going to do, uhnless hes moving like someone who wants to create his own style, but that would be ended quite soon, i think
all these moves have over 1000 years of traditions, theres reallny nothing more you can do

Zeus: if that questions directed at me then......
Just as in unarmed fighting, we learn the priciples of weilding a sword... its basic mechanics so to speak (like how a painter will learn about colour/contrast/shape etc). So you practice these basics over a long time. When it comes to improvising and reacting to fast cuts its a combination of being highly familiar with the basics and the tactics of swordplay - openings, feigning attacks, destroying the opponents will to fight etc etc.
In the end you are totally free to respond to any situation with a true heart unclouded by preconceived fears and ideas - just as a tallented painter freely paints a masterpiece, desgarding "the rules" he learned in the beginning.
Hence Martial "art".
