One of the largest active volcanos in the world, Mt. Erebus, (directly under the ozone hole), emits more chlorine gas and other ozone depleting chemicals than we do. The ozone hole doesn't have to do with global warming anyways, that's CO2 mostly.

It's really funny how on these global warming websites, their "graphs of global temperature" look like they added really arbitrary jumps in temperature at the end. Then I look up temperature data charts for individual cities/locations: I have not seen one yet that shows a local increase in temperature.
There are always natural fluctuations in temperature, there are several different oscillating cycles due to things like the wobble of the earth's spin, the elliptical shape of its orbit, co2 fluctuations, etc. Right now on the long term we are cooler than we should be.

>are more extreme winters and summers a symptom of global >warming? (i.e. colder winters and warmer summers)
probably. climate change may lead to more extreme weather rather than just hotter weather
also the uk may get much colder if the gulf stream gets affected
but basically the world's climate is massively complicated, and even the very best computer models can only claim to be guesswork.
but the basic idea that humans can affect the climate seems feasible to me. there are over 6 billion of us, with the developed countries burning energy like crazy, and the developing world catching up fast. if CO2 doesnt get us then something else probably will
unfortuneatley the large scale lifestyle changes needed to avert disaster are not likely to be taken on by people until they see proof that we are in danger. and due to the long-term nature of environmental problems, once you see proof of danger, its probably already too late.
if you're a sceptic, then consider this:
consider if the environmentalists turn out to be wrong: ok, the major economies may have grown less fast than they could of due to environmental legislation, and maybe some people waste time recyling stuff that wasnt really necessary.
consider if the anti-environmentalists turn out to be wrong:
well, the world as we know it ends.
isn't it worth playing safe?

Extreme weather- I don't know.
The only way to stop the gulf stream is to stop the earth from rotating. I heard about that part from the movie, do they actually say why it does? Or is it just like: 'oh man temperatures are hotter so the gulf stream totally stops.'

>The only way to stop the gulf stream is to >stop the earth from rotating.
who says? the world's climate is massively complicated, and even the very best computer models can only claim to be guesswork. (thats my opinion, and i'm sticking to it)
but if you want to argue the point anyway, this is the scenario the film uses (but exagerattes and speeds up):
"The scenario suggests that as global warming melts Arctic ice packs, the North Atlantic will become less salty. This would shut down a global ocean circulation system that is driven by dense, salty water falling to the bottom of the north Atlantic and that ultimately produces the Gulf Stream. This much is respectable scientific theory, and some researchers believe it could happen for real in 100 years or so. "
see here for full article
also check out this one if you're interested.
but take it all with a pinch of salt cos no-one knows what the fuck is going to happen really. systems this complex are way beyond our understanding.

>Ha ha, I loved that episode of Clarkson where he got this >senior greenpeace guy to (extremely reluctantly) concede >that cars role in pollution and global warming is less >than 1%. PWNED!
hmmm ... if its the interview I remember then it was Jonathon Porritt, who is nothing to do with Greenpeace but was once the director of Friends of the Earth.
Also I don't remember him conceding that point ... it seems unlikely that he would concede something that was not true. Cars and other vehicles contribute about 1/3 of US CO2 emissions, for example. see here
I think he did concede that cattle are a major cause of CO2 though. (maybe bigger than cars - I'm not sure, can't find the stats)
Ultimately though, Clarkson's defense of his envionmentally reckless lifestyle was this:
"Well, tonight, you'll be cycling home in the rain and I'll be in my nice warm car."
Which shows the sort of incisive reasoning that the environmental lobby are up against.
