with the rotk dvd just coming out, does anyone know any
up-to-date news about the extended version?

right before the movie was out in theaters i heard that
peter jackson was adding a lot of scenes to the extended
version, but after a quick search today i see that this
may not be happening. but, this 'news' is 5 months old. amazon.com
has the extended version listed as coming, but gives no
release date, or info.

what's the digs?

Behold!

The bulk of the new scenes are reported to be the
confrontation with Saruman at the beginning of the film,
Frodo and Sam's infiltration of the orc army in Mordor, and
the Houses of Healing in Minas Tirith.

There's going to be a character named The Mouth of Sauron
(he's from the books) who greets Aragorn and Co. at the
Gates of Mordor. I've seen pictures of him in a magazine;
pretty damn awesome.

More info about the character and who's going to play him...

yes, I have seen it.

it's a little over four (4) hours now and it is better than
the theatrical cut, as was the case with the other extended
cuts.

a bit more is set up and/or explained.

the whole Saruman-bit is nice to see, except that he throws
a fireball at Gandalf, which is pretty dumb.

nicest restored scene for me was the Mouth of Sauron. that
looks quite great. :)

be warned about the documentaries: especially the last disc
is a weepfest - because, you know, the actors really
became a fellowship of sorts and now it's over boohoo etc.

also fun to listen to the actors-commentary track.

most fun is the huge difference between how the American
actors and the English actors speak. this is heard best in
the combo Billy Boyd & Dominic Monaghan (Pippin & Merry) and
on the other hand Elijah Wood & Sean Astin (Frodo & Sam).

Wood and Astin can't stop from gushing over the film, how
great the experience was, how special, etc. etc. etc.

Boyd and Monaghan are making silly jokes just about the
whole film through - they do make useful comments too but
with a lot of humour, most of it being genuinely funny.

Boyd and Monaghans coments for Two Towers where awesome .
Like when they explained how Jackson had trained 6 million
ants for extras in Mordor mass scenes and how he was alowed
to rip four of their arms and legs of. They gave their 100%
for the movie haha! Or that Sam has mariuana in the little
salt box. Its true , they are genuinely funny.

I have seen the ee version and the mouth of sauron scene was
my favorite to (aswell in the book). Jesus what a freak!!
the way he speaks and moves , its so bizzare and erie in a
way.
i also really liked the scene where sam and frodo are forced
to march with the orchs in mordor and then stop for the
inspection. That big fat orch/troll thing with the white
eyes was soo awesome. Really well made with the make up and
all , and Jackson is so good with these scary/funny Orch
scenes , the way he turns around and opens his eyes and the
music just gets really dark , i actually got goosebumps
haha!.

I love the way the extended versions flow better. The
teatrical versions feels like the sloppy versions. Like for
example you never get to see that disscusting limp orch
generall die , he just kinda fades away in the battle scenes
but in the real version you see him get killed by Gimli and
Aragon.

I can't whait to see the extra dvds. I heard about the
abandomed Aragon vs Sauron concept . How did that look qrter
? could it have worked ?
I think they have left a bunch of scenes that really builds
up for that to happen but i doesn't.

oh yes, that Frodo and Sam inbetween the orcs scene is good,
I have to agree.

on the Sauron-fight: they show bits of that Aragorn vs.
Sauron sequence - he first would appear in his Majan form,
bathed in white light (you get to see a special effects shot
of that), the most beautiful creature in the world - on the
dvd they say they were thinking of Kate Winslett or Cate
Blanchett (apparently she hadn't been cast as Galadriel
yet) for that role.

you see footage of Aragorn fighting the stuntguy who plays
Sauron. looks a bit silly, but any footage without sound-
and visual effects looks a bit silly.

they did use that fighting footage but replaced Sauron with
the cavetroll that is in the finished film - they even use
the shot that was made as Aragorn seeing the white light
form of Sauron in the film.

Jackson decided away from the idea because he wanted the
focus to be on Frodo, not Aragorn.

I read on a Lord of the Rings website that looks more to the
books, that there is no indication in the books that Sauron
doesn't have a physical form - in fact, there is more
evidence that he does have a physical form than not.

I'm glad they dropped the Aragorn/Sauron fight scene.

If you're going strictly by the books, Sauron is no longer
able to assume a form pleasing to the eye by this time ...
but can still have a physical form - as when Isildur cuts
off the Ring. His appearance after he lost the Ring is
mostly left to your imagination (as it probably should).

i was against that kind of scene first but now i kinda wish
they would have done it. There is a huge difference on what
works in a book and what works on the big screne. If they
could do all these endless shots of arwen and aragon love
stuff (like half of two towers) they could damnwell have
done the big fight at the sauron confrontation at the end
and make it work.
and all this talk about focus on frodo is annoying too ,
like for example the door to moria thing where Frodo solves
the riddle and not Merry who is in the books hinted to be a
clever little bastard. And there is no mention of Hobbits
being particulary good at solving riddles wich is one of
their favorite games. Now im being silly perhaps . But i
think a sauron at the end would have been the real "money
shot" .

Maybe Jackson will go mental like george lucas one day and
redo the movies like "they where ment to be" .
Maybe he too will go "there should have been a sauron
fight!!"
Maybe that will be his very last words when he dies at some
deppresing New Zeland hospital .

And we never really get any real idea of what his fysical
form really is in the books either wich is really cool cause
you geat all these mental images in your head.
It is hinted somewhere that his skinn is burnt black ashes
.
And in silmarilion before he gets really powerfull he is
more of a evil wizard type character i think.

But books is books and movies are movies. I think the big
armour thing worked pretty well in the movies. I liked all
the details on the armour , all the little evil runes and
secret scrools all over the thing, made him look ancient.

Yeah those scenes are shit!! They look like they would
belong better in Ghostbusters.

The ghosts Frodo encounters under water in the swamp is ten
times cooler or he could have done something like when you
get to see the ringwraths real forms wich also worked really
well.
