On "the Sopranos" the other day, there was a bit where one of the characters was fretting over something or other and Tony says, in a quickfire, punchy and incidental piece of dialogue:
"Don't worry, since 9/11 our boys are in the middle east securing the fuel that'll make our economy tick over for the few decades. We'll be alright".
It was a brilliant piece of observation on the head-in-the-sand, short-term attitude some people have.
Here's another thing. I'm no republican at all but it could be argued that a handfull of irish terrorists managed to kick a major colonial army made up of thousands of troops out of a piece of crap slice of this island. What chance have the inexperienced US army got in a country the size of France, in the middle east, with a well armed and volitile population? Fuck all. Its going to go on and on and fuel more terrorism and cost the US a fortune.

hmmm the email doesn't mention how iraqis have to queue for upwards of 4 hours to get petrol, when there are some of the world's biggest oil fields just down the road from them, pumping out oil to the Americans.
I don't believe many of the "facts" in that, especially about schools, immunizations, clean drinking water electricity (a lot of even baghdad is still blacked out), and hospitals. it's tripe.

most of you are making some good points.
many are making it seem like the us didn't at all do what they did for humanitarian reasons. that most definitely wasn't at all a big reason why bush decided to send troops there/etc.. but that was a big reason for many other people to go along with it, who would normally totally oppose it.
do you really think that the u.s. could've actually sent needed supplies to the poorest citizens of a sadam-dictated iraq? i mean, think about it. would their government want to let the underprivileged citizens know that the u.s. is actually doing something to help them? i'd think they would either take the rations/donations/etc, and either keep them entirely for the higher-ups or not even use them at all, removing all evidence.
keep in mind, the former iraqi government would do much to make their citizens think that the us government is entirely evil, just like the u.s. government does much to make their citizens think that the former iraqi government was completely evil..

"sent needed supplies to the poorest citizens of a sadam-dictated iraq"
the 'oil-for-food' program was meant to do exactly that.
"keep them entirely for the higher-ups or not even use them at all, removing all evidence."
and that's exactly the effect it had.
for the 12 years after the gulf war the poorest people in iraq were being starved to death by the iraqi government because of their continued defiance of the UN mandates, and the efforcement of UN sanctions.
NOT going to war was killing people. it's just not as black and white as you're making it out to be nacmat.
to say that the us had altruistic motivations is not accurate. but, as you said i think it's equally as inaccurate to say that oil was the only motivating factor. i just don't think it's as simple as that.

yeah i wouldn't trust those facts if they just in an email from a "soldier" being circulated around the net
but i am sick of the way the situation is being portrayed by everyone... people seem to have already made up their mind beofre the war started "This whole thing will be a failure!", and theyre not willing to change their minds
then "we'll fail in bagdad, it'll be a masacre!" uh.... no.... i guess not...
ok so the whole country fell, with huge cities being taken with a historically unprecedented civilian casualty rate (as in it was tiny, especially considering the iraqi soldiers were dressed as civilians, and using civilian vehicles, and in urban areas)
now that the occupation hasn't gone to well people are saying "they didn't even PLAN for this! thats the stupidest part, it was a brilliant war but they DIDNT EVEN PLAN for the occupation!"
uh..... yeah... youre right, they didn't have a plan america took over a country and promised to democratize it with the whole world watching (and complaining) without any sort of plan, they didn't even THINK about it
the soldiers are just improvising..... whatever, why would they plan? they're stupid! havne't you seen the way george bush talks! america must be run be retards
the only thing that pisses me off more than the american government propoganda is the anti-american propoganda

real reason "to kill a guy we put in place that isnt earning us enough money anymore.. . plus this way we get to inflame more arab hatred and steal their oil.. . which we need to keep our gas gussling economy ticking for another decade.. . and to be honest we'll be lucky if our politicians like Dick Cheney for instance live that long.. . screw the rest of you guys.. . you can go back to hunting mammoths for clothes and waving sticks of fires to keep the wolves from stealing your children"

the problem is that the UN seems very bad at taking action. there's so many different parties involved that they're rarely able to come to a consensus, and end up taking half-assed measures. rowanda is a good example of this. the UN did relatively nothing and millions of people were slaughtered while the international community shook their heads and debated endlessly. kofi annan recently apologized for the UN, but who actually feels responsible for that? no one does, because every nation was able to hide behind the shield of the UN.
the exact same thing was happening in iraq. nobody thought saddam should be left to do what he wanted, but nobody wanted to take any real action either. so, we starved them for 12 years. how long should the UN have kept that up knowing that it wasn't working? i just can't see how that is an acceptable solution. it's just that it's easier because nobody has to feel like they're the ones killing innocent people because technically they're not dropping bombs on them. but the end result is the same, except oil-for-food was directly targeting ONLY innocent people.
i think it's a huge commentary on george bush's abilities as a diplomat that he's lost a pr campaign to saddam hussein. people hate him so much that they immediately dismiss every idea he has. but, i believe the UN was wrong here, exactly like they were wrong in rowanda. and now the international community is withholding it's aid even though it's obvious that failure to create a stable iraq will undoubtedly cost the lives of millions more innocent people. why? because they know that it'll be easier to let that happen and then point their fingers at america and say 'we told you so' than it would be to actually help try to make the situation better.

mappatazee and zeus you're pointing fingers at the wrong people. israel unlike iraq keep getting constantly bombarded with terrorist attacks. which would explain why they tighten their security in the gaza strip and try their best to secure their nation and follow along international res. this isnt even about resolutions anymore, lets go beyond the name calling and think things through like human beings.
you have a man in power who doesnt care about the welfare of his people. if you dont think thats just cause for war. then i dont know what is
zues and mappatzee you both really need to get your heads out of your asses and realize this isn't a game. there are people out there who really need help and those like your 68 resolutions are good examples of how many times israel has had to probably change their tactics in dealing with afghanistan.

I love how you reinforced your point by saying 15 resolutions!!!!
and then we mention the 68, and you say "this isnt even about resolutions anymore"
so it only applies to who we want it to apply to? where is your logic?
and did you ever stop and think that, wow, maybe there is terrorist attacks on israel, because the PALESTINIANS (not the afghanis, but whats the difference right... all those darkies are the same... fucking terrorists) have thier land being invaded, thier homes destroyed, and their people killed, ILLEGALLY. Im not saying the palestinians are blame free, but come on, wake up... the plastinians arnt commiting suicide bombings for a lack of a national past-time.
and if you really wanted to stop the name calling and think things through like human beings, why tell us to take our heads out of our asses? Real mature. Thats thinking alright. Bravo.
That last paragraph... I dont even know where to begin, to get through your ignorance. You spell out very clearly, that 15 broken resolutions is AWEFUL, AND JUSTIFIES WAR, but 68, ah.... nah, those are justified.
Seriously man. Think before you post.
