the unnecessary history of doctor rockit.
THIS IS AN SPLENDID ALBUM/COMPILATION! i recomended quite some albums lately, but if i would have to pick only one, i would most definitely pick this one! brilliant stuff, i prefer this to any other matthew herbert release. almost to nice to be true...very summerish music...very varied album, so there's something for everyone, i love the whole thing though!
some samples:

im pretty sure this compilation will be very appreciated by all herbert fans, and everyone that likes downtempo electronica...this is beautiful!

i haven't got this release but i have got quite a bit of his stuff.
tape measure is a great track, as is the ep 'd is for doctor.'
i think you can still get the indoor fireworks album quite easily, if you are into this stuff.

i've got this one record that Herbert was involved in from way way back under the name Fog City, called Monster Magnet. it was basically Mark Darby from Might Force Records collaborating w/ Matt Herbert and Tom Middleton. at 10 copies of that particular pressing its probably the rarest record i will ever have. memo: must buy a safe.

its actually pretty decent. i like it. Monster Magnet is a breaks song, Sidewinder is kind of an industrial bit (Matt put some samples of Fred Astare tap dancing in it) and Daybreak is like a kind of reggae/synth old rave sounding tune. its a sort of old rave/proto-idm record.

Now, Tolstoyed, you KNOW that I like Matthew Herbert. I like a lot of the Doctor Rockit Stuff that I've heard in the past & will probably get round to buying this comp at some point, save me chasing after all the individual eps.
Café de Flore is one of Herbert's best pieces. When I saw the MH Big Band live in Brighton around Easter time & they played this track, my only regret was that the horns outweighed the beautiful Parisian accordeon line.
Other MH albums I have: Bodily Functions Around the House Secondhand Sounds 100lbs Goodbye Swingtime The Mechanics of Destruction
& assorted Mp3s from his releases as Radioboy & Doctor Rockit.
Herbert seems quite comfortable flitting between Jazz, House, Techno, Brokenbeat & Electronica. Almost everything he's done is really accomplished.
I have the Mr Oizo vinyl release of "Last Night A DJ Killed My Dog"; Herbert did a pretty decent remix on that too, which never turned up on Secondhand Sounds.

i only have this dr rockit comp, bodily functions and around the house. perhaps i have so other of his tunes on various compilations...but i downloaded a bunch of tracks after i made this thread and it's all sweet stuff...i'll sure be getting more of his stuff.
acrid milk, heh, yeah, you're most likely the biggest herbert fan around...i was really sorry to have missed him with the big band last year in barcelona...i arrived one day too late :(
anyway, i hope i get the chance to see them some time soon! im going to look for that remix of mr. oizo (i bought two cds from him yesterday :)

just got me a copy of doctor rockit "d is for doctor" of ebay. it was the first doctor rockit stuff i heard, fantastic.
a friend of mine has the matthew herbert "parts" series. all the first stuff he released. and pretty much everything after as well.
i dont like the big band stuff, i think its rubbish.

Bob: Yeah, the Big Band record is possibly one of my least favourite. I wouldn't go as far as saying it's rubbish, though it has taken a few listens to get anywhere with it. Made for an interesting live show; some nice rearrangements of tunes from his other albums actually. Particularly "The Audience", which has to be his finest moment to date. Such a good tune.
Tolstoyed: "the biggest Herbert fan around"?!
