you shouldnt believe there's really a best, taste is a
factor too,
so then it's just a good way of getting people to have their
music heard

My aim is to not be the worst. I think that's a good
objective.

Sounds intriguing, I must get round to reading 'the
reinvention' some day.

Have your people contact my people and we can take it from
there. I am going to get some sleep now.

You might want to contact Phobiazero about this, I only have
contact details for about 50% of that list, the rest hide
their email address so Phobiazero will need to either
provide the details or send emails on your behalf.

So is there going to be a minimum points for entry to limit
numbers? I'd like to enter but I'm a bit of a newbie. :(

Also what timescale? Tracks need finishing. Oh and I need to
think of an artist name. Suggestions welcome!

Would it be an idea to have a page somewhere, i mean I could
set it up, or someone else could, where say you had a list
of all the entrants with links to the appropriate songs, so
you could see it all and listen to the tracks in one easy
go, rather than trawling through threads? Or was that what
you were planning anway and I am just being a monster tit?

good idea, dog_belch. But first, we HAVE to decide upon who
enters... call me negative noonoo, but I don't think 150-odd
artists is practicable! :D

who's going to run it? we should not post all the music and
shit in this thread.. that'll be too messy... emails would
be good.. maybe someone could create a new email at
hotmail (not worksafe (this thing with people surfing
at work ruins link-gags.. I surf at work...)) or
something...

but I'll have to go home from work right now (I don't HAVE
to, but the day I work overtime is the day you all die!!!)

don't be a spoilsport, matthew. I also do not like
competitions, but this is a fun way to re-establish the
comµnity spirit of Xltronic, and to propagate the music. If
people start dropping out, then it will invalidate the whole
thing.

It's easy, just do a group system, with those coming at the
top (or near the top) of their groups progressing to a
conventional knockout tournament structure. like the world
cup, but with laptop geeks!

Everyone in group A can rate everyone in group B, everyone
in group B can rate everyone in group C, and so on. So if
you want 16 entrants to the tournament round, just divide
the entrants into 8 groups and have the artists coming 1st
and 2nd in each group go forward to the next round.
Personally I think 16 groups and 32 in the tournament would
be better if there's >150 entrants.

A few questions if I may:
-Old tracks or new tracks made FOR the tourney?
-Track length limit?
-Genre?

I bet all 150 people in that list wouldn't want to
participate. I wonder how many it would be if you set a
deadline for people to say they wanted to be part of it? And
then go from there.

offline VLetr from London (United Kingdom) on 2004-05-12 08:06 [#01184174]

yeah good idea. personally I can't work without a deadline.

shouldn't the entries by anonymous, to make it a fair
competition (like the autechre remix comp)? and therefore
the tracks should all be ones unheard by xlt people before.

Well, I don't know about creating new tracks for the
championship. I was just thinking in line with the IDM
Championship 2004. But I guess we could make new tracks
solely for the championship.

this all sounds very interesting. My 2p.............

if this is going ahead it should be new tracks only as many
people will have had time to get used to artists previous
tracks & that may result in the tracks 'growing' on people.

Wouldn't there be less chance of a draw if the marking
system was out of 10 & not 5?

is it still going ahead?

I would have said you should just submit what you believe is
your VERY BEST work, whether it was made 10 years ago or 10
seconds ago.

Use this as a chance to show the world your true greatness
regardless of genre, style age. And if you don't think you
have made our best track then you better get to work! :)

fuck that 'categories'-idea.

if that's used, I'm out.

offline VLetr from London (United Kingdom) on 2004-05-13 03:52 [#01185792]

Yeah it's not practical. We'll spend all year trying to
define the boundary between IDM and glitch, or dub and
chill, etc etc... there are no boundaries, only a continuum.

offline Drunken Mastah from OPPERKLASSESVIN!!! (Norway) on 2004-05-13 03:59 [#01185799]
Points: 35867 Status: Lurker | Show recordbag

ok. fuck the categories.

But we'll still need to figure out who's comparable as
artists for the prelims.. you can't do Archrival vs. Skink,
for example (imo).

offline qrter from the future, and it works (Netherlands, The) on 2004-05-13 04:04 [#01185803]
Points: 47414 Status: Moderator | Followup to VLetr: #01185792

indeed. I have no idea what most of those categories really
mean musically and I just don't work that way - making music
categorically.

offline marlowe from Antarctica on 2004-05-13 04:09 [#01185812]
Points: 24589 Status: Lurker

Yes, ditch the categories - we have to keep this simple if
it's to work. I'm stil unsure of having to make new tracks,
or submit x amount of tracks. I was thinking of
taking in a person's canon into regard, and judging them
overall. But.... if there's 10,o00,000 entrants, that could
be tricky (disco)

offline Drunken Mastah from OPPERKLASSESVIN!!! (Norway) on 2004-05-13 04:13 [#01185819]
Points: 35867 Status: Lurker | Followup to marlowe: #01185812 | Show recordbag

let's just do it like this:

- no genres

- tracks can be whatever you like. old, new.. just your
best. it wouldn't really be a musician competition if you
had to make new tracks, and you were totally uninspired, and
made some crap.. it would be forcing yourself to make music,
which is never good.

now.. how do we decide who's in and who's out?

offline teapot from Paddington (Australia) on 2004-05-13 04:14 [#01185821]
Points: 5739 Status: Regular

there is no way on earth i would participate if i had to
create new tracks, i have far too much on my plate as it is
at the moment...
