This is really it people! No more fake photoshop
images of it... I truly believe this is what the Nintendo DS
will look like :-)

And it looks great! In my not so humble opinion! :-D

Read the article too. I'm finally beginning to understand
what Nintendo is trying to do with the multiple screens and
one of them being a touch-screen and so on...

"In one demo, players guide a toddler-age Mario as he
falls from the sky by drawing clouds.
"

Sounds pretty sweet to me. I had just imagined the
touch-screen as something where you would push "buttons"
through that screen. But it's actually going to become an
active part of gaming... having to draw things (clouds) to
play the game. It opens up a world of possibilities. Now I'm
actually starting to get excited about this :-)

once again?

When did you think was the last time they messed up? I
haven't been dissapointed by anything they've released yet.

And like you could read in my 1st post, I don't think this
is a mistake either. I was sceptical about it... but now I'm
starting to get really excited!

touch screen sounds boring in my opinion.
But it looks kinda like 80s (game / watch - atleast more
than their previous portables), which is nice.

I don't want to play advanced games on small formats (not
even in big formats, most of the time).
But I guess I'll have to 'hope' they'll do do something new
and creative with this console.

N64 was a mess up.

Sony PSP isn't going to look like any cheap $20 PDA. Also
the button positions on that photo look really nasty. The
touch screen by stylus also sounds a pointless gimmick.

That's just another mock up,the DS is not revealed properly
at E3 till later on this afternoon. There isin't even any
speaker placement on that thing which screams mock up.I
wouldn't write it off at all just yet.Interesting quote from
a recent interview with Shigeru Miyamoto."I have not seen
the PSP," says Nintendo's Shigeru Miyamoto, creator of the
famous Mario, Zelda and Donkey Kong characters. "The screen,
I believe, is bigger than a DS screen, and I am sure it will
have excellent graphic quality." But, he adds, "the PSP will
not be able to display anything that you cannot do on a
current system. ... We want to do things that you could not
do before. We are looking at the creative end."

Well the photograph is sourced as Nintendo, and Miyamoto is
basically saying the PSP will be more impressive. EA have
aready announced future handheld development will be focused
on Sonys platform.

The problem Nintendo have is that most games released these
days are cross platform ports of the same ideas. Games
companies just won't be willing to risk massive budgets on
original games for a marginal handheld console.

I would like it to e a success, I just don't think it will
be.

It's not from nintendo trust me,you think they would leak
out a photo just for some website, hours before unveiling a
product that will determine if they sink or swim?Miyamoto
never said it will be more "impressive",he said the PSP will
have excellent graphics.The thing is,with handhelds,better
graphics and more power have never determined success in the
past.The gamegear,the atari Lynx,the wonderswan and neogeo
pocket were all more powerfull and capable than the Gameboy
but did any of them beat it?And look at the Ngage-it's
pathetic sales are a prime example of folk demanding easy
functionality and playabilty over better graphics.I have no
idea and I don't think anyone does know how well the DS will
do but in any case we'l be getting something unique even if
it does fall on it's arse.

I don't think that's real. And I think this is a really lame
move by Nintendo. The Playstation Pocket will probably
steamroll it... it's Sony, and it's got way more horsepower.
The two-screen thing is... iffy... BUT, I think they may be
on to something with the touch screen!

It's too convoluted, though. They say it's not going to
''compete directly with the GBA'', and it ''ISN'T GBA 2''...
I don't know WHAT the fuck they're trying to accomplish
here.

I'm keeping a close eye on the E3 happenings, including the
DS... I have IGN Insider and they're updating the site with
videos every 2 minutes with all the latest.

The Halo 2 videos... blew my mind.

“When Nintendo came down and presented the DS platform to
us, … I think everyone was in shock. It was amazing. …
Our technical and central technology guys were kind of
drooling at the abilities and wanting so much to program and
dive into programming for the system. … Nintendo DS, I
believe, is a revolution in change for hand-held gaming.”
– Will Kassoy, vice president, global brand management,
Activision

“I believe that Square Enix has a promising chance in the
platform, since Nintendo DS allows users to experience whole
new game play with both its input system and its output
system.”
– Yoichi Wada, president and representative director,
Square Enix

“The Nintendo dual screen is something that we’re really
excited about developing for. It’s very innovative, which
is classic Nintendo.”
– Nick Earl, vice president and general manager,
Electronic Arts

“The fact that touch panels can be associated with many
terms about touching that we never had, such as touch, push,
feel, rub, slide and pat is wonderful. … I have been
working in this industry for 20 years. During that time I
made many games. But I think this is the first time that we
have a new input device.”
– Yuji Naka, senior corporate officer, development
division, Sega

“Once again Nintendo is taking another leap in the gaming
experience for the gamer by providing totally new game-play
experiences, developing new gaming habits. Very
characteristic of a Nintendo maneuver.”
– Jay Cohen, vice president, publishing, Ubisoft

Yeah, I just saw the DS preview on Gamespy... I was hoping

I'm not crazy about this console, and probably won't buy it,

use of that touch screen.

It's plasticy, it's silver, it's ugly. People are shallow
about these things. A good example is the X-Box. This will
be the end of them if they don't sort it out. The idea is
brilliant but maybe too complicated?

Yeah, it's an eyesore.

The PSP is supposed to be Dreamcast quality, DS is N64. But
it's still too close to call. Sony might have a tough time
muscling their way into the handheld market, or their name
recognition and powerful processor might spell trouble for
Nintendo. Tough to call right now. I'll be picking up ONE of
them.

The first PSP movies from a while back looked damn
impressive.

Just read the specs man!
Touchscreen, dual LCD screens ( Game play also could use
both screens at once, offering a giant boss for heroes to
defeat
), PDA capabilities, backwards compatible, built
in microphone for voice recognition, 3D surpassing that of
the N64, dual slots to hold whatever they can think of in
the future....
What's so complicated about 2 screens? It actually gives
more space to deepen gameplay without having to interrupt
it. Back in the old school days I always had a weak spot for
the dual screen game&watch games. I owned "rain shower" and
"donkey kong"

Maybe I was wrong saying too complicated, but I know from
past experience people like to keep it simple. Here are some
examples:

ps1 + portable screen = failure
gamecube + portable screen = failure

Here are some simple successes:

gameboy/colour/advance

Can't think of any more but please feel free to add.

All those features sound great, but it needs SOFTWARE. I
don't really care about PDA or voice recognition, and I'm
perfectly happy with pausing to go my menus, not looking at
a second screen. Being backwards compatible, THAT'S what
perks my ears up the most. Sweet.

I more excited now about the DS than I was, admittedly.
Great possibilities. But I was also really excited about the
Virtual Boy at one time, and the 3DO. That thing sounded
like a veritable swiss-army-knife back in early '93! And the
developers had nothing but nice things to say. I can't make
a judgement now, but as soon as I see the game lineups,
that's when I'll make a decision on what handheld to
support, PSP or DS. Gamecube's third party support has dried
up for various reasons, so I'm worried about the DS.

I also don't like the fact that after PSP and DS render the
GBA obselete, 2D games are going to just... stop. GBA was
the last haven for it, and I'll miss the old school.

And trust nintendo to bring out some fancy game for this
baby.
I think the reason the gameboy survived for this long is not
just because of the backwards compatibility which this one
will have as well, but also because they keep releasing ace
games for the small device (warioware anyone?).

I'm also not a great fan of everything having to go 3D all
of a sudden, especially on such a small screen. But think of
management games, strategy games and true RPG's, they could
have such great benefit from the touch screen and the dual
screens that imo it doesn't matter how great a single screen
display you have, you end up getting owned by it.

Can't say anything about the PSP yet, it certainly looks
promising as well, but Sony's games hold far less appeal to
me and a problem could be that they don't already have a
huge amount of people who can just plug in their old gameboy
games and let rip, they have to start everything from
scratch. Of course, judging by the popularity of Sony, this
won't be a big problem and it's got MP3 playback and it's
probably gonna be a mobile phone too so that's a plus, but
then again the DS also has those possibilities.

Yeah, Nintendo has been putting out lots of great stuff for
the GBA. But they're been pretty alone in that regard. All
my favorite GBA games are first party, other than the
brilliant Castlevanias. They'll have competition now,
though.

I'd expect the REAL Castlevanias and Final Fantasys to go
the PSP because of Sony's wheeling and dealing, but that's
all speculation. Sony gets the good stuff, Nintendo gets the
Crystal Chronicles. And the PSP will have Ratchet and Clank,
Jak and Daxter, Sly Cooper, all the countless AAA
platforming games from PS2. Handhelds are usually geared
towards a younger audience, and those games HAVE to find
their way on there.

This is the only reason I'm worried. I have no doubt the
console is going to be able to do some great things, and
WILL, and Nintendo's games will ALWAYS be first rate. But
that's not enough anymore, with Sony in the handheld wars.
If the DS has a handful of really innovative Nintendo games,
and the PSP has a steady stream of tons of prime third party
games (plus Sony's amazing exclusive platforming
powerhouses) like its big brother, I'll go PSP. Innovation
or not.

But right now, could go either way. I'm not sold on either
of them, and there's probably a 50% chance I won't bother
with them anyway! I've never liked handheld consoles, and I
only play GBA roms.

I agree, gaming like that should be extemely lush+++ and
makes me much more excited than anything the Sony PSP is
offering so far, even though it's impressive.

Another advantage for sony however will be that the mini
blu-ray discs are capable of storing 1.8 Gigabyte and
therefore movies will be playable on their system, not that
I'd be the one who'd likes to stare at a small screen like
that for 2 and a half hours but it's a nice extra. Though I
don't quite see the use of having 7.1 surround sound on
board?
Still, somehow I keep having a gut feeling of disliking the
entire Playstation format.

Ha!

"It's not from nintendo trust me"

I'm never trusting you again ;-)

Well I'm excited. As far as I'm concerned this blows away
the Sony PSP. I fully agreed with everything they said
during the pressconference. This is something new. This
opens possibilities never seen before.

The PSP is just a miniature PS2. It may be technically
superior... but so were Atari Lynx en Game Gear to the
gameboy... look what became of them.

Besides the DS... that pressconference was AMAZING! Did you
guys watch it? I soo wish I was at the E3 right now.

I'm a bit confused about the zelda-situation. They announced
today a new zelda for gamecube with realistic graphics. But
will that be next to The Windwaker2, or instead of The
Windwaker2? I hope the latter... I'm really dying to play
another cel-shaded zelda adventure :-s

Other than that, the realistic one did look really yummy too
:-)

Plus there was a supershort flash of a NEW 2-dimensional
Zelda-adventure for GBA.

AND the Four Swords Adventures are also still coming out
:-D

Possibly/hopefully also something Zelda for NDS?

2004 is definitely the year of Zelda!

The new Super Mario Bros game should be awesome aswell...
it's been since Super Mario World that we've gotten to play
a true new Mario-adventure in 2D. If miyamoto worked on it
himself... it's going to be platformgaming-heaving!

Yeah that press conference was great. I'm most excited about
mario - 4 player on the DS. (I heard the "DS" name as well
as its appearance may change by the time it's officially
released.) So much Zelda! That video looks great. Go to
gametrailers.com to see a nice version.

I agree the PSP offers nothing new to the haldheld market.
If I want to play PS2 games I'll play them at home instead
of buying another $300 portable system. Also I wonder how
many PSPs will break within the first year, not to mention
how bad that screen will be scratched without a cover.

say that after my heart sank after seeing the design
Nintendo unveiled, reading about the Hands on tests and
seeing the games has lessened the blow-considerably,Metroid
prime-hunter looks incredible and the games announced and
future possibilities have got me really excited.I also agree
about the PSP.Ok it looks sexy but why am I totally
underwhelmed by it,it's a Ps2 in minature with some add on's
like you said. The DS approach feels fresh and I'm far more
likely to take interest in something original. That new zelda

I think we're in agreement about the whole NDS/PSP thing

They're supposed to be able to communicate with each other
over a 100 feet! Imagine that. You could play against

Nintendo has made a mistake or two in the past, and i am
skeptical about the DS. However, one world were Nintendo has
always dominated has been the handheld market. People seem
to forget that the Game Boy (including GB, GBC and GBA) is
the best-selling game system of all time. While Nintendo is
slipping in the console market, partly due to their failure
to jump on the console online gaming phenomenon, they still
have an insane strangehold on the handheld market.

If you ever look at Japanese best-seller charts, there's
always at least 3 GBA games in there. I have faith that
Nintendo will at least give PSP a run for its money.

The Dual Screen thing is a good idea though. I'd love to
play a Castlevania on GBA without having to stop the action
for menu screens. Hell, you could even have larger stage
displays. The possibilities for it are endless.

I'm leaning towards PSP, because of the specs.

Screen resolution
PSP- 480x272 (16:9 widescreen)
DS- 256 x 192 (main)

Processor
PSP- 333Mhz (yikes! Insane)
DS- 67mhz

Main memory
PSP- 32
DS- 4

etc.

Call me shallow, I guess. The DS has some awesome ideas, but
polygon pushing, higher resolution, particle effects, huge
environments (Ratchet and Clank could run on a PSP but not a
DS) and especially FRAMERATE are things I would NOT trade
for speech recognition or easy map management. The
difference between a slightly stronger N64 and a slightly
weaker PS2 is very signifigant, gameplay-wise as well as...
sexy-wise.

The Gran Turismo PSP gameplay footage from the press
conference is spectacular. On that huge screen, it's going
to look like heaven. That Skeleton game looked phenomenal
for a first generation game, too.

The Syphon Filter game looked PS1, though.

I'm not sure the casual gamer will realize this or care
about specs or anything, though. So I think this fight is
really up in the air.

The game I'm looking forward to on the DS the most is the
Metroid game. That would be a great game to play during
bathroom excursions. I'd be there for hours.

I've typed a lot of words in this topic for somebody that
probably won't buy either of them anyway, based on their
game lineups now. ;-) Until I see a BRAND NEW Castlevania or
Metal Gear Solid, I might not even bother.

And the DS is NOT the GBA2, which they said they were also
planning, so Nintendo might or might not have extra ammo if
they go through with it, whenever they do... so I wonder
what they'll do with that one. Maybe it'll have the power of
mini-Xbox.

Oh shit. Metal Gear WAS in the PSP preview vid. I missed
it.

Yeah, I think I'll need to find a way to get both of these.
Metroid + Metal Gear= I need.

Here's a shot of the Metroid for DS. Nice use of the touch
screen for the map. Also pretty impressive that they got
something even RESEMBLING a powerhouse game like Prime to
run, and it runs fairly well (videos).

And I can't believe how good this looks, even though it's
just a grab from a short clip. So beautifully sharp.

Bastards. They could have put this on the PS2, and saved me
whatever money I'll need to buy a PSP.

the people who want that.
