Alright, I'm going to invest in an HDTV. I need to know
some things though.

I want widescreen. I do NOT want anything monstrously large.
But I'm thinking... maybe I don't have a choice? What's the
smallest 16:9 HDTV you can get? 30-35 inches is good enough
for me. But I'm not sure what sizes these bad boys come in.

Another thing is, I'm NOT going to be using this to watch
TV. I don't watch TV. I'm only going for this for my video
games. I'm tired of blurriness. I bought Rallisport
Challenge 2 last night, and as amazing as it is (best racing
game I've ever played), it SCREAMS to be played on an HDTV.

I made a custom Autechre soundtrack for it on the Xbox hard
drive, though. Driving up the side of a mountain in a beat
up red sportscar while Bine is wreckin' the speakers is fun.
But I digress.

Lastly, what kind of wires am I looking at to play this
shit? S-video, or what? What sort of extraneous bullshit do
I need to get my games up and running? I'm not well educated
on the subject, but recent events have driven me to do
something drastic, and upgrade. Anybody here have experience
with HDTVs, and in particular, HDTV gaming? Money isn't
really much of an issue, but I don't care about size, just
picture clarity. I'm NOT going to spend 3000 on some 60''
monolith.

On another messageboard I frequent, there was a topic about
a 27'' HDTV for 499, but it was not widescreen. I need wide.
Ideally, I'll spend 800-1000. But I think I might be
underestimating the prices... eep.

32" would be the perfect size I'd recommend to you. I know
nothing else :$

go to a shop and find out

but yeah should be able to use your normal av stereo cables
with it, but you won't notice much change unless it's 100 hz
with DNM (digital natural motion).

DNM adds frames between the frames of the signal, and thus
significantly improves picture quality during fast panning.

as for the size, there shouldnt be any problem finding
something around 30 inches.

Okay heres the deal,

HDTV is really mostly for watching TV. If you want to watch
HDTV (which you dont) but you need have: An HD TV, and a HD
receiver box (which costs another $400 or something
rediculious in that price range). But moving on to video
games...

I have a Widescreen LCD 17" HDTV. It came with a S-video
input (which is an absolute must for a tv that will be
running vgames). The HDTV part really doesn't matter in
your case, ophecks. As long as the system you are using has
a S-video out and your tv has a S-video in, then you are
ready to rock.
Dont forget to get a hold of a SVideo wire to connect
everything.

I went to a couple of shops, but I don't trust... shop...
guys. They smell funny.

Knobcheese/Weatheredstoner- thanks for the info, that clears
up a lot. See, that's why I love you guys, and the
messageboard medium in general.

So I just have to look for S-video? I did see a few 35'' TVs
with ''S-video'' on the information labels. They weren't
widescreen, and didn't have ''HDTV'' specified anywhere. But
there's a few more places I'm going to check.

They also said ''800 lines of resolution''. I'm confused on
this point... what's the deal?

And again...

Also, what do you know about progressive scan? I certainly
need something with that capability.

If the tv has component inputs that should look amazing. I
hooked up my Cube with component cables and the clarity of
the picture was night and day. So sharp and the colors are
brilliant.

I know, I can't wait. There's a few Xbox titles that support
1080i, and I want to see them in action.

I hate Sunday. Everything's closed, and I want to go gear
hunting.

Alright, I got a big fat widescreen motherfucker. Ninja
Gaiden never tasted so ridiculously good. Game of the
generation. In widescreen 480p progressive scan mode, the
game can turn your skull to a fine grey powder and your eyes
to a salty jelly-like translucent substance . Coming soon-
big fat sound system.

Also, I'm playing Transformers for PS2, and it is the bomb
times 30. Buy this game. The first level is the amazon, and
I think they got every fucking square inch of it onto this
DVD because the levels are gigantic.

Too much. :_-(

Just for you, I used the Universal Currency Counter. It was
1700 Canadian, which equals... 697.734 GBP. I think. That
doesn't sound right to me. You guys are warped.

1700 sounds like an awful lot, AND IT IS, but for Canada,
this was a pretty good buy.

EPILOGUE
Oh my God. I hooked up the ol' PS1, and the pixels are as
big as my fist. I think I'll keep the 20 incher around, so I
don't make my eyes barf.

What ratio is the widescreen? It doesn't look 16:9. Also
what screen size, make etc.?

You couldn't pick one of them up hear for any where near
£700.

It's 16:9, but I guess that's a strange angle I captured it
at. It's a 43'' LG (Canadian company).

Generally, I'm very happy with it. People warned me about
the dangers of playing PS2 games on it, and I now know why.
The shimmering and aliasing are an eyesore, and most PS2
games don't even support 480p. They still look great,
especially color wise, though artifacts from that old
hardware is inevitable. I'll get used to it. Xbox looks
incredible on it not matter what you're playing. Gamecube,
can't say. The only way to get Nintendo's component cables
is right from them directly. Pricks.

The price is amazing. LG is a massive Korean based company
so I dunno where you get Canadian from :P

43" is a fucking monster :D

Haha, seriously? Well, I thought they were Canadian
because-
A- I'd never heard of them before I bought this (could be
the rock I love under!)
B- the website on the box is www.LG.ca. I should really
factor in DISTRIBUTION to the equation, sometimes.

That 1700 included an employee discount (stepfather's
nephew), plus no tax. It was on display for $1999. If you
haggle with them, or pay cash, they'll always cut a couple
hundred from it anyway. Unfortunately, HDTV's aren't THAT
low in price yet. And this was one of the cheaper ones
there.

Still a good price.

LG are one of something stupid like the top 3 biggest
electronic companies in the world. They are a multi
trillion dollar business. Although they do make a lot of
generic rebranded items as well as their own LG branded
stuff. They used to be called Goldstar a few years ago.
