amazing
sometimes boring, sometimes sensational, sometimes fun,
sometimes crap
i was a bit disappointed when 15 minutes before the ending
people came in that actuallly stayed: the whole joint had
been swept empty by then
there were some cool melodies on some cool instruments, like
a great violin solo on some synthesizer thingy i think
bremsen played (i was so rude to only introduce myself to
qrter, who is, i must add, in real life even cooler, he had
on a cool hat and glasses, but also he was more gentil in
real life, like us).
qrter was cutting or slicing these samples all of the time
that got boring sometimes.
also there was this terrible artyfartsy associative poem
read out by one of them over the music.
they ended with some default beat from one synthesizer over
which they played a happy, catchy tune. that was hilarious,
especially when the dude that had started the beat banged
his head to it a couple of times, that was so out of
posture
oh and everything looked great: there should have been made
pictures..
all in all a memorable experience

up next: me hitting some bells and stuff as background music
in the opening play of an upcoming amateur play-festival in
utrecht!

it'd be kinda funny to take a picture of me wearing it as a

HA!.

it was nice to see big/Martijn IRL, as all the hip kids call
it. :)

I have great respect for him sitting through the jazz-band
on before us (I can't stand the crappy standards they were
playing), but even more respect for sitting through our
set!

we did indeed clear the room, although it was pretty empty
anyway.

I have mixed feelings about the evening. I think the first
half was better - each of us played a kind of solo and the
others could join. that worked best structurally.

the second half was too much crap at the same time, making
everything sound like.. um.. crap. all subtleties went out
of the window. and I like subtleties. :(

also crappy was my computer. it can't take much. I can only
run a few plug-ins at the same time before it starts fucking
up. so I couldn't do a lot of tweaking.

I'll see if I kind borrow Bremzen's desktop for tomorrow
evening, than I can actually do something.

the violin-thingy was indeed by Bremzen! :)
(it was his official The Books-ripoff.) we were both
cutting and splicing samples, so I wasn't the only one being
boring. :D

the terrible artsy-fartsy poem was a Dutch translation of
Captain Beefheart's "Neon Meate Dream Of A Octafish" - the
vocal being manipulated real time by mr. Bremzen yet again.
the person who spoke that poem is Daniel Cross, who is the
kind of leader of the Rosa Ensemble, who perform a whole
Beefheart show normally (and I am one of the translators for
that project - I did not translate this poem though!).

arf.

oh and I did not look cool.

Daniel is real prissy about everybody dressing up for things
like this, so I was more or less bullied into it. :)

it was like these two old jazz connaisseurs came in, sat
down, got up and left

yeah with the violing solo you were cutting up violin
samples, that worked out nicely

how do you do that cutting up anyway? in soundsforge and
then? you select a small bit and that's automatically
repeated?

next time do take pictures for key_s

I had not a lot to do with the violin-thing - that was all
Bremzen's thing. he had all kinds of samples loaded up into
his keyboard.

I did the stuff with the sample from 12 monkeys - I loaded
the voicemail (with her saying "the secret headquarters of
the twelve monkeys.." etc.) into soundforge and then just
'scrub' the sample - moving the pointer over it. that way
you can 'play' the sample, as it where.

no, it's all over now. no more gigs in the near future
featuring qrter and me.
HOWEVER, saturdays gig was great! Much much much better then
thursday. Pity that only a small number of people were there
to witness it. I have a recording which is pretty ok, i'll
upload it soon.
We are going to try to get booked into Lowlands with this,
which will most probably be somewhat impossible, but since
the Rosa Ensemble is playing there most probably (me and
another guy from last weeks performances are in that
ensemble) we might have a small chance (though smaller then
the number of people who showed up saturday...)
