I also believe hotmail would have something to say about
it... Email addresses are not domain names. Especially free
ones!

it's their fault for making it free, they knew that there'd
be reckless idiots like me roaming the internet

there's nothing to stop him though really

regardless of whether or not its free, it'd still have value
to a (sad) person

as long as he didn't majorly advertise it, i think it'd be
possible

Some vicious bastard might catch wind of the sale
(presumably he'd have to tell someone about it) and then tip
off hotmail though ;)

Well I can assure you that there is not a single piece of
information that I supply to hotmail that is valid

In all seriousness though, I don't think hotmail would do
anything about it, unless it was well publicised (in the
press) or made large amounts of money.

I know people have sold "intangible", non-business things
like Everquest characters before.

The only advantage I can see of an email addy like this from
a business POV is if it was a popular group (e.g.
linkinpark@hotmail.com) and you created an elaborate scam to
"leak" this email address as a genuine one. Then collect the
email addys of the gullible saps who fell for it and then
sell them to spammers (think about it, anyone who believes
that linkinpark@hotmail.com is really linkin parks email,
will probably happily buy: "\/|@GR@!! No prescription, save
$$$s")

Extremely good points. A business venture for the future?
Maybe a bit risky for me tho.

yeah... I think so to (I just checked).
Before I thougth it was like most other places where you're
allowed to register one account, but there was no such info
to be found on the hotmail-site (atleast not easaly found).

Thinking about it, you could even do it with an obscure
email addy (d356aghjru@hotmail.com), it'd be more believable
that way. If you could get a tabloid to run the story
"leaking" it, you'd have thousands of gullible people's
email addresses within a matter of hours. I might do this,
not for the money, but more to help the spammers. If they
can directly target the stupid, maybe they won't need to
email normal people such as myself. :)

genius. But how could you make hype about an e-mail which is
so obscure?

By having a newspaper (or even a well visited website like
Somethingawful.com - although the punters there would be
more tech savvy and cynical) run an "exclusive" about how
they managed to track down his email address. Perhaps even
respond to a few of the first few emails, "Yes, this is
Justin Timberlake, how did you get my email address, I do
know you right?" to get the ball rolling.
