If you spam your music....

Shouldn't you review other people's music?

I've noticed that a lot of people spam their music but never
seem to review other peoples music. Isn't that a bit rude?
It's the same people all the time reviewing peoples music
and they spam their music the least!

I've not mentioned names for a reason....

Seems fair enough.

I don't do either but I do intend to bust some spam
everyone's way in future.

I would review other people's stuff, but the thing is (and
I'm sure some other people are in a similar situation) I use
xlt at work ('work'!), where I don't have audio
capabilities.

I rarely listen to music made by members.... though I have
listened to all the vibes compilations and I am impressed by
the quality

I never spam my music as I am not a music maker

I only spam my pink cap

Yep. Whilst it's a bit juvenile to post something like,
"I'll listen to this, but only if you check out my tunes
(URL) first!"

On the other hand, people who never comment on
anyone else's stuff and yet bump their own music
threads dozens of times (and even get shitty at people for
not listening) are worse IMO. Sure, if your stuff is earth
shatteringly good (or at least "proper electronic label
quality", as some people heres is...) people will listen
anyway, but if your stuff is mediocre (which a lot is) or
poor, most people certainly won't DL more than a couple of
tracks.

Just like I have a mental list of artists whose stuff I
almost always DL (even a couple who have not once commented
on my stuff) if I can afford the time, I also have an
equivalent "don't bother" list... the people on this latter
list are the ones who make mediocre music and never bother
to comment on anyone else's stuff.

JAzembo always seems to comment on peoples music and he has
clearly listened to their music YET i've never seen him spam
a track.

Ceri: BAM!

VLetr: That makes sense.

nacmat: That doesn't matter. You're not spamming your music
trying to get people to listen without doing the common
courtesy of listening to theirs too :)

The Vibes are marvellous :D

i try to listen to alot of people's music but the threads on
this board move to goddamn fast. i have a full time job,
marginal social activity, and run a website for xlt artists
in my spare time, so i probably only ever actually see 10%
of the "new track" threads.

so people, if it seems like i'm ignoring you, i most likely
never saw your thread. or i did and i'm ignoring you.

i try quite a bit to listen to other people's music. in
fact, whenever someone new hears my stuff, i'll kindly take
a listen to theirs. i only wish i could do it more often,
but i'm on a phone connection, so that sort of limits the
amount of reviews i can give.

It's like listening to some one because you enjoy it and not
just waiting for your turn to talk.

I try to listen to as many people's music as possible. I am
a 56k though so it can be hard. I respect those who comment
when I become Spammy Mc Spamster. It's very satisfying to
see people listening because they want to and not just
waiting for the favour to be returned. But without "giving a
little and getting a little" then not as many would listen
as it works both ways.

I would like to take this opportunity to listen to any new
tracks to show the love.

I sporadically download tracks and review them.

I sporadically upload tracks to have them reviewed.

if I download something, I always try to say something about
it. (unless I completely forget, ofcourse. :P)
I try to brutally honest - depends ofcourse how well I know
the person how I word it.

when I upload something myself, I don't try to bump it too
much. if just a few people listen and comment, I'm generally
quite thankful. and happy! happy! joy! joy!

there are a few people's tracks I will always download and
comment on, ofcourse.

I do think the (as Ceri puts it) "I'll listen to this, but
only if you check out my tunes (URL) first!"-thing is ASS
and will never do that to anyone.

I feel people should want to listen to my music because they
want to, not because of some trade-off, that will mostly
only result in a comment like "yeh, different" anyway.

SADIST: I found goodbye_charly extremely enjoyable. This is
exactly my cup of tea in every way down to the last grain of
sugar. I will be listening to this quite a bit I imagine.
The track itself creates a very good feeling and all the
melodies and chords compliment themselves to the best of
their ability. I think all should listen to this as it's a
brilliant piece of work. You must inform me of your future
releases!!! You have made a new follower on this day.

Should there be an XLT artist releases section?

I think that way the music doesn't have to be 'spammed' and
members could listen to and review each other's trax without
getting in the way of MB discussions.

EM411 has a releases section as described above. I
dunno, would it work for XLTronic though?

no, but it is seen as common courtesy that when spamming
music that you take some time at some point to listen to
other people's music.

and there are some people who ONLY spam their music and
never listen to anyone elseseses.

I tend to review more music on watmm-EKT, just because there
is a dedicated board for it, and the threads dont get lost.
They stay there for a bit, because thats all there is... no
other random threads bumping em down. Just less of a
hassel.

I don't feel like I'm cheating people here. I hope people
don't look at listening to music as a favor, like you owe
them something. They should be listening because they want
to hear peoples music. Sometimes you feel like checking out
someones track, sometimes you dont. Thats why EKT is nice,
because the threads linger, and you can go look for em when
you feel like it.

Lately Im just not in the mood to listen to other peoples
music (I don't feel guilty, because I don't think that
people feel sad that I'm not commenting.) I listen to other
peoples music in classes everyday, which isnt fun because
its not for listening pleasure... its having to sit
there and listen. Im overall kind of burntout with music
right now. Im looking forward to this summer and not having
to do or listen to music thats class related. Just more
stuff for myself, and have time to spend on it.

Anyways, I'd be fine with people not responding to my
tracks. You don't have to comment, or do in depth reviews,
if you feel like its a task. If you want to, and you enjoyed
it (or hated it) enough to respond, then go for it, and I
truely appriciate it. But I rather people just be listening
because they want to, for enjoyment.

ah, but there is also a difference if you partake in other
discussions on the board too. you may have slowed down a bit
in that aspect, but you're still there.

I don't think you post that many tracks, anyway - which also
makes a difference.

for example, Oddio used to post a lot of tracks and is still
pretty frequent, but you can bet he has heard just about
every track ever spammed on this board.

and I think he does it for his own fun, but also because he
wants other people to listen to eachother.

if everybody just says, "look, listen if you want to" and
noone ever listens to anyone else, it won't work.

I do sometimes think you should give people a listen simply
to keep the ball rolling (and with "you" I mean all of the
spammers, not just you, Zeus.. :P).

it's also showing interest in what other people are doing,
what is happening in a community.

offline Raz0rBlade_uk on 2004-05-04 13:21 [#01172999]

I think we've covered it all.

* It is courtious to partake in the community, this involves
general posting, commenting and spamming.

* Don't listen to other people's music for the sole reason
of having yours listened to. You shouldn't spam if you don't
intend on taking an active interest in other people's music.
If we all only wanted our tracks to be listened to then
nothing would get listened to!!

* Don't expect people to listen to your music, just be kind
and show that you value their opinion.

* It is good to sacrifice the bandwidth especially if you
are on modem, but as it's easier for people with faster
internet, maybe they should take more time to download more
tracks in comparison to the time it takes for a 56k.

* Finally, if you want nothing to do with it, then have
nothing to do with it and bugger off.

I try to review everyone's stuff as much as i can because i
know that it helps to get things listened to and commented
on...'workshopped' in a way. And I love hearing new stuff
from around the globe! Its the same thing with any other
form of creative output, just to know that people have
heard/seen/read/etc it can help, and any comments or
suggestions can be used to better the peice, and any praise
can be relieving and also give you insight to what works
well.

anyway, i should be posting some tracks up soon so ^___^
