I am going digital camera shopping this evening (I will also buy Hitman: Contracts if I find the Xbox version, but that's another story).

Seeing as I'm not a pro photographer, and I expect to only be taking pictures of my cat, my buttocks, and stupid things, I don't need anything particularly fancy. I'm willing to spend 200-250. What should look for at that price, any particular make/model, any particular specs? Resolution, megapixels, whatever? Someone else mentioned that the Canon A70 is a good buy, I'm leaning towards that one at the moment.

What kind of camera do you have? Yes, you!

I have an ePhoto CL18 - it takes photos up to a whopping resolution of 640x480! The photos are usually so detailed that you can almost make out what you took a picture of. It holds up to 16 photos, and I can't even imagine wanting to hold more than that. It has no nasty viewer screen thing to drain the batteries and will run completely off of the USB cable with no batteries at all in it! I recommend this camera, giving it 5 stars (*****) since I'm not allowed to give it any more. I don't regret my purchase for a moment!

Pretty much anything that has 'Fuji FinePix *' on it is a very good camera. I have one of last years models and the colours and detail are amazing, and it is only 2.1effective megapixels. The newer ones are higher however. But yeah, the Fuji FinePix series will make you happy, and last years models are cheap and really really good still. And get something higher than 2 megapixel.

And as for hitman contracts, there are only 4 new levels, and the rest are remakes of hitman 2, so, i dunno how much it costs now but it may/may not be worth it. Give Manhunt a look too, its the newish game by Rockstar North, pretty damn good.

  hope that helped somewhat :)

I have a Fuji Finepix something, it's okay. I'm disappointed with the flash sometimes, though. It gives anything that has eyes red-eye and if you're taking a picture in a dark room (such as pictures of bands who are performing), they sometimes come out grainy. Also, it makes everyone's skin look way worse than it actually is. But it's still not awful, and I didn't pay a ton for it (less than 300 bucks, almost two years ago).

Two peas in a pod! That's what I picked up at Staples, the a300. And now I'm watching the game, documenting it forever. Ruslan Fedotenko got a roughing penalty and I'll never forget it because of my Canon Powershot.

I'm liking it, seems to be better than what I needed, at a price that was lower than expected. Satisfied.

be sure to pick up some rechargable NiMH batteries - i got the white/limegreen duracell ones - and they are much better then regular ones

be sure to spend some time reading the manual and exploring all the colour and lighting features - otherwise your pictures will be crap depending on the lighting

you had any experience in photography?

Zero experience, but I have several landmarks and buildings and stuff around town I plan of photographing. I'm constantly on Deviantart saving architecture and scenery and whatnot, and I always wanted to do it myself. Definitely looking forward to using and abusing this camera, I have some learning to do.

Thing is definitely a battery muncher, though... gotta get rechargables as soon as possible.

Also got Hitman- Contracts. After the hockey game, I will kill so many people in cold blood (bad, dark pic, I know... the flash was reflecting off the white surface and screwing it up, I'm an amateur).

Spend a little more and get yourself a Canon SD200. it retails for 299.

Its a phenominal camera. takes gorgeous photos, has great features, awesome battery, abd has the ability to take 1 minute 60 fps movies, or 30 fps movies. if you use a high speed SD card, you can take 30 fps movies until you run out of room on the card.

i have owned about 7 digital camera's and this s by far my favorite. its smaller than a pack of marlboro's as well.

stay away from fuji. they use XD cards.

i really don't see any improvement in the a85 compared to the a80, which has a flip out lcd, yet it is more expensive.

  check:
  side by side
i've used the a80 for some time and really enjoyed it. the flip out lcd is fantastic imo, which is why i went for the powershot s1 (also VERY reasonably priced).

optical:
the lens itself zooms. you can see it move. 'real' zoom. image quality remains equal with each step.

  digital:
well i have no idea how this works, but you can compare it to zooming in on images with any kind of computer software. the quality gets less with each step. Digital zooming decreases image quality.

I suppose Lee knows more about this.

Optical zoom uses the lens of the camera to zoom the image which still uses the entire CCD sensor of the camera. Digital zoom essentially uses a smaller area of the sensor and then uses a software algorithm to resize the image to the size of the set resolution.

Essentially digital zoom can be acheived by taking a picture with digital zoom off and then using Photoshop to crop the image and resize it up to whatever resolution the camera is.

As Jeroen said...with the higher zoom the worse picture quality because you are effectively resizing on an increasingly smaller number of pixels.

Really you should never use digital zoom if you are taking serious photographs.

Yeah. Optical provides the data, Digital does the processing. You can be assured that the digital zoom will be done well, but you'd still rather have optical. Digital is a cheap way to get higher zoom though, so there's nothing wrong with a manufacturer tagging on some digital zoom to already strong optical zoom, but rather it's efficient use of money.

digital zoom reduces the resolution to make the shot closer, like if you re cuting it on photoshop.
optical zoom is a real analog zoom, wich dont low the quality of the pic.

i hope you can understand it, os the better i could do in english :/

Most digital cameras show it either in the LCD or viewfinder when it enters into digital zoom. Another thing you normally get is a slight pause between the optical zoom finishing and the digital zoom being engaged.
