What would suddenly make my CD/DVD drive stop responding
(on startup: secondary master incompatible message)?

And why is troubleshooter fucking worthless?

Also, hard drive said something like 'S.M.A.R.T capable, but

it just suddenly stopped?

go into your bios and fiddle until something works,

It'll usually tell you what to press to get into your bios
at startup

basic input output system, you get there by pressing del or
spacebar on the very 1st startup screen (or something,
depends on yer motherboard)

anyway, it configures the drives and basic hardware

Is this a desktop PC?

If you were lugging it about then a cable could've come
loose but not fully out. Making it be sort of read.

If it's a laptop then.....

erm.

open the computer, unplug the dvdrom (completely), check all
the small pin-thingies.. see if any of them are broken,
tinker with the drive for a while, plug it back in the way
it was, and restart your computer.

Update:
Yes, it was a matter of the CD-Rom becoming somewhat
un-plugged. Since I didn't realise how easily it slid out,
I tried taking apart the whole bottom of my laptop, but it
came out that only one screw holds it in place, so it slid
out very easily. From the way I carry it in the backpack,
it's likely it just slid in that direction and unplugged a
little bit. Wooo!
