Short film I'm working on.

So me and my pal are working on this film for Dome 'Fest
2004. It's a competition for shorts filmed with 180 degree
lenses, then projected with 180 degree lenses onto a huge
dome surface.

The clip is obvioulsy compressed quite a bit. The actual
resolution of this thing is staggering (10 seconds of time
lapsed raw frames are about 1 gig). I've been handling the
music and my friend has been doing all the video, filming
sites around the city and whatnot, then editing them to fit
with the music we worked on together. We're almost done,
still have a few more things to take care of.

Here's a clip. It's all rounded, but when projected onto the
dome it would look normal.

Optical Nervous System

ha! awesome work, pomme, i'm so jealous! ;)

but seriously, i love it when people get short films etc.

I've never quite finished them....

Very nice.

How do you test a movie like that though? I mean to see how
it looks when actually projected onto a dome. Do you get to
practice it somewhere? Or is going to be a surprise for you
guys too on the actual festival? I mean for instance... what
does it look like in a dome... when you use the effect where
the orb gets smaller? I imagine if you're looking at that
shot projected on a dome, it must feel like you're falling
down.

I like the music too. And also what the guy is saying. He
sounds like my old biology-teacher :-p That guy was always
rambling on about the fact that we had no idea what the
actual world looked like, we only knew the interpretation of
it that our brain makes. Haha. Pretty heavy stuff for high
school.

great!

I love fisheye-lenses and such (although it will not be used
in this way now). The editing was cool and most of the
photography + sound fit very well together.
How much did you pay for the equipment used for this film?

So far everything has been done on pc..,and the competition
is thousands of miles here, so I probbly will never get to
see it in all it's glory. My friend that I'm doing all this
with has a small dome set up in his studio space. I'll
probably get to see it on that soon.

imagine if you're looking at that
shot projected on a dome, it must feel like you're falling
down.

Yes, exactly. You have to use your imagination quite a bit
to try to figure out how this is going to look on a 180
degree surface.

"so I probbly will never get to see it in all it's
glory.
"

You're not going to the actual film festival yourself? :-/
That's harsh. All that hard work... and you'll never see the
results.

"You have to use your imagination quite a bit to try to
figure out how this is going to look on a 180 degree
surface.
"

It'll look really cool though I imagine! I once went to one
of those theaters that uses that technique... and it was
truly amazing. There were shots of mountain-climbers that
actually made me feel afraid of the hight. And when they
showed a piece of film shot from a ride on a rollercoaster,
I could feel it in my stomach as if I was on the
rollercoaster myself :-)

I think it's because when you're looking up to such a dome
you never see the edges of the screen (like in normal
cinema). So the mind probably gets tricked into thinking the
images are real and not just a movie-projection. It's a very
interesting technique for sure!

It's those fucking "codecs". One of them ran away, and the
other died. I think I fed it the wrong diet.
