Miles Davis is great. I remember me and some mates just
chilling out for ages to a Miles Davis CD. Oh man, I want to
put some on NOW!LAZY_TITLE

Birth of the Cool > Bitch's Brew/Kind of Blue/whatever. And
how prophetic was that album title?

He was important, but as far as jazz goes, there were and
still are more interesting artists.

More interesting players, yes, but for emotional impact
miles is pretty close to the top of the list. That's why i
like him.

i wouldn't necessarily dispute that claim... but this isn't
the "ye olde proclamatione of Miles Davis' earthene
superioritie threade"

... please... the man gave us 4 classic quintet albums in a
single days worth of work! and his influence on guys like
Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock, John Coltrane has helped
these guys into the upper stratospheresof Jazz (not to say
that he did it alone, but he definitely played a role)...

ye olde miles poll:
1. What's your favourite Miles album?
2. Who is your favourite Miles sax player?
3. who is your favourite miles drummer?
4. who is your favourite miles pianist?
5. who is your favourite miles bassist?

1. In a silent way.
2. Trane, motherfucka. Honourable mention to wayne shorter.
3. Jack DeJohnette.
4. Chick Corea.
5. Harvey Brooks.

Agreed. His influence is huge but it's not like he came from
nowhere: Parker, Young, Hawkins, Gillespie were all big
before his time came, let's not forget these important
figures either.

Album: Kind of Blue
Sax: Coltrane
Drummer: Tony Williams
Pianist: Bill Evans
Bassist: Dave Holland

Kind of Blue was my first jazz album and I don't think I've
heard a more consistent album of his, all the tracks are
great. I urge everyone who hasn't to check out Wayne
Shorter's and Dave Holland's more contemporary work, still
amazing.

I would say that Miles even has influenced idm electronic
music in a way. If you check out his last work,
Pangaea/Agharta/Dark Magus, you'll see stuff that could
almost be seen as the first attempts to drum&bass.

for sure, for sure... mustn't forget about Bird or Pres...
or a whole lot of others who cam before and after the man...

album: i'm inclined to say kind of blue... but i feel like i
have to give a lot of them more listens before i can decide
sax: coltrane
drummer: tony williams (but i must give love to philly joe,
cause he's the shit too)
pianist: Herbie Hancock (but they've all been amazing)
Bassist: Paul Chambers

...Miles davis threade!

(this post will lose its context... i'd just like to sat
that i am a dork)

honestly now... he is one of the few artists who i am
confident enough to pronounce as one of the 20th centuries
most resounding contributions to cultural history (yes that
sounds high-fallutin', i know... evidently i am high right
now... )

which is your favourite "fusion" miles album?

I find his music pretty boring really... just not a fan of
the trumpet sound... it's too overused in my opinion... so
if one doesn't like the trumpet, it's kind of hard to like
Miles Davis...

i have bitches brew on quadraphonic LPs. the title track
sounds bitchin (pardon the pun) when you set it up...you
hear miles in front of you, and the echoes are behind you.

i can't wait till people start releasing music in 5.1
surround...IDM will be a whole new ballgame...in fact, i
feel a new topic coming on...

t: bitches brew and live evil
s: wayne shorter
b: jack dejohnette
k: herbie hancock
d: holland

one of my favorite musical experiences was the summer i was
fortunate enough to live a friend who had just returned from
berkley.. playing trumpt for 8 years as a kid i was already
well aware of davis but listening to those records and
particularlly listening to these last 2 while digesting and
disecting every piece of it, then swapping them back and
forth with some of my electronic records..

anyways. not only are these killer albums but they're very
nostalgic for me..

his stuff is nostalgic for me also.

took a road trip through new mexico with agharta/pangea in
the car stereo...it was a convertible sixties-model chevy
impala. wide open deserts, alien landscapes, sunsets that
seem to last forever...

one of my all time favorites is "flamenco sketches."

check it on a late, quiet summer night.
