Then tell me, why do people like this kind of music? Does
it make you feel better wanting to be black? Or buying into
a culture to which you have no natural affiliation?
Explaint to me.

i like it if it sounds good - if they have something smart
to say it's a bonus ...since this thread is about mf doom -
i didn't even know he was black untill i saw his pictures.

Since when to you need a natural affiliation with a
particular culture to enjoy their music?

I appreciate hip-hop for the music and the culture. Labeling
something as "black" and writing it off without taking any
time to learn about what the hip-hop culture is seems very
ignorant to me. No offense ecnadniarb, but I dont agree with
what you said.
Are you saying that noone should go out and enjoy Kabuki
theatre simply because its Japanese?

Draping the label "black" over an entire artform is unfair.
Plain and simple.

first of all, i don't thinking i'm being presumptuous when i
say that an awful lot of the people here who like doom and
madlib ALSO like Doseone and El-P... by which i mean... hip
hop simply isn't black anymore... it's about as
multicultural as genres come... the blacks can be credited
with it's creation, and many of the finest hip hop albums
are by black people... but it is most certainly not a genre
defined by race... (in fact it's waaaay less racially
homogenous than say: experimental electronic music)

and in any event, we like it because a) MF Doom is the most
creative mc who can still flow reasonably well
b) Madlib is the best hip hop producer in the game today,
and will be remembered as one of the finest producers in hip
hop history....
the sound they cultivate together is entertaining, soulful,
eccentric, clever, beautiful, etc.

just because you don't like it doesn't mean that our reasons
for liking it are completely unfounded... maybe you don't
like japanese noise, but do you tell people they want to be
down with the japanese because they like Merzbow and watch
anime?

"Labeling something as "black" and writing it off without
taking any time to learn about what the hip-hop culture is

That's an ignorant comment to make, because you have
assumed that purely because I said I disliked rap
that I didn't know about the culture.

I think maybe you are all racist towards normal white people
as well. A gang of reverse Michael Jacksons...who probably
enjoy his choice of hobbies as well.

wouldn't you say that your assumption that we like something
because we want to equate ourselves with black culture (as
opposed to just liking it because we think it's good)... is
just as presumptuous?

very, very, very white (and yes i acknowledge the hypocrisy
in the way i phrased that statement in the context of this
conversation)

by the way Tolstoyed, what did you think of Quasimoto?

yeah, you should definitely give it a while... at first the
personality of quasimoto is a little odd... but as you grow
accustomed to him, he becomes very very interesting, and the
beats just sound better and better...

yeah, i'll definitely try more...i thought i will never get
into madvillainy as much as i did. i liked that kmd stuff a
lot before i've heard madvillainy and i thought i'd never
get used to it...but now when i listen to kmd again, it's
like i'd be listening to something completly different -
it's still great but not close to how great madvillainy is.

both artists are amazing x2, that's for sure. however
madvillainy seems to have an aweful lot of filler for being
such a short album.

guess i should give it more airtime.

i checked some quasimoto, deadeight recomeneded...could be
the same album (i'll check when i get home), but i kind of
didn't like the tone of his voice, i'll listen to it more
ofcourse...i didn't like madviliany instantly either...

btw, that track on madvilliany where quasimoto does some
vocals is excellent!

that "filler".

obscure americana references..

i imagine that would be the hardest thing to grasp for

ok, so; vik vaughn: Never Dead -

lil' schootime viktor and his pal get pissed off because
some school chums steal his videogame, so they totally flip
out an kill some students and a couple of teacherish folk.
then they run away to chinatown and meet up with a voodoo
guy who helps them rewind time back a day so that none of it
really happend.

is that basically it?

I was gonna buy this yesterday but I didn't get to the store
in time and it was too late to go to the store because the
store was then closed.

So I downloaded it.

:: feels shame ::

It's so good I'm gonna buy it anyways. Mad creative fun
stuff. Don't know what else to say about it yet.

For those who may have downloaded Madvillainy from
file-sharing networks before its actual release, keep in
mind that those were demos and do not represent the final
product. Go out and buy it.
