Network problem: any techs here?

this isnt music-relatd, but im desperate!

i dont feel like paying for a computer tech because i know
this is supposed to be basic stuff, and i figured some of
you might be familiar with computer networks...

anyway, here goes:

ive got 3 computers, running on win2000, that are on the
same network and connected to a hub. i want to add a fourth
computer, running on win98, but cant figure out how.

the ip address for the first 3 computers are:

10.10.10.11
10.10.10.12
10.10.10.13

so i figured i'd give the fourth computer this ip:

10.10.10.14

however, when i search for the other computers, it finds
nothing!

what am i doing wrong?

thanks a lot for anyone you can give me a hand.

i think elusive is the networking god around here. Wait till
he logs on, which should be sometime soon i think.

try ping'ing the other computers first, that'll tell you if
it's an IP issue or a Windows network issue.

as far as i can remember, you need to make sure that all of
the computers are on the same workgroup

in Windows XP the default workgroup is MSHOME (i think), but
the default workgroup in earlier versions of windows is
WORKGROUP

make sure that they're the same

Also, it'd be a good idea to make sure that you've got at
least one directory on each computer shared

your IP addresses seem fine, although usually for private
networks IP ranges start 192.168.xxx.xxx

that shouldn't really matter, but it can't hurt to try
changing the IP numbers

the 10.x.x.x class A is also a private network, just not
quite as popular unless you really need a whole class A.

and you don't technically have to be in the same workgroup,
since you can 'explore the entire network' and access all
workgroups that are connected.

yeah i know about the workgroup thing, but in my experience
i've always come to a halt with windows and other
workgroups

but seeing as it's only for personal use, i can't do much
harm to set all the macines on the net to the same
workgroup

it does sound weird though

maybe the NIC is fucked?

yeah, no reason not to if it's just a little home network.

it could be anything at this point, there's been no
troubleshooting to rule anything out.

yeah..this could be a million things

NIC fucked
Cable fucked
Cable not the right type (crossover is a NO-NO for hubbed
networking)
Cow infestation in the NIC port

could be anything!

i left the laboratory, so i cant try anything at the
moment.

how do i ping the computers? and how will i know if it's a
windows network or ip issue?

the other 3 computers work fine, as they were connected
months ago by someone who's obviously more qualified than i
am...

thanks to both for trying to help me out btw.

the cable isnt a crossover, so you can rule that out.

from what i wrote, did i do everything right up to now?
because im clueless!

goto command prompt by going Start Menu > Run... and type
"cmd.exe"

then at the prompt, type "ping" followed by a space and then
the IP address you want to ping

if the connection is there, you should recieve packets back

if you're not receieving, then there's a problem

well, yeah i can't see anything wrong with what you've
mentioned so far, but there are a lot of issues that need to
be taken into account

one of them being that Windows isn't exactly a piece of piss
to network with.....then again, no OS is easy to network
with!!

as long as you have the IP addresses set, the right cabling,
working NIC's, and preferably all the machines are on the
same workgroup they should be fine, it should all work.

i can't remember if there are issues trying to get new
generation NT based Windows up and running on a net with
older DOS based versions of Windows.......damn my head

what would be the next step if the connection is good?

make sure that all the settings are sound

stuff like workgroup.

make sure that there are no conflicting computer
names......that might cause a problem

make sure that on all of the machines you have the same
protocols and clients installed. for a modern network you
only really need TCP/IP anyways, and you must have them
installed else you wouldn't be able to set the IP addresses

make sure that the option to share files and folders is
switched on

i can't think of anything else at the moment that might be
causing a problem

are firewalls installed? that could be problematic

if there are any firewalls, disable them

the names are ok, everything on every computer is shared,
and there are no firewalls...

i'll try to do the ping thing next time im there.

thanks a lot for the help. when i get an update, i'll
resurect this thread, hoping both of you will see it :)

i hope that you can resolve it, i know it's a pain in the
arse when you're trying to do something, and it
should be simple but it just won't go right

i should see it, i'm basically in here from 5pm until 11pm
weekdays!!!!

pretty much 24 hrs a day at the weekend!
lol

Check you have the subnet set correctly on the computer you
are adding otherwise it won't be seen by the rest of the
network.
