I just thought they had some crazy telescope that didn't have to wait to for the light, but yeah. Crazy. The whole idea about the stars we see. Really amazing. |

Everything is just so FUCKing huge and enormous out there. And I think there's some sort of probe due to reach Saturn sometime this year, which should be interesting. It seems like huge things like this are never on the news, though... you'd think people would be really interested. Sometimes these stories are relegated to the little sidebars in the big fat weekend papers. These stories you'd think would be... astornomic. I can only seem to find out about these things via the internet, and geeky messageboards. Or is it just where I live, in a land that TOTALLY lacks any semblance of culture? |

Oddly enough most people don't care about grossly expensive missions to lumps of rock and gas in space which have no benefit to their daily lives at all. It's not culture. It's an obscene waste of money while there are starving people and more pressing issues on this planet. |

I'm tempted to speculate, but instead here is something more relevant and coherent than what I've said before: Space science and what we call "defense" have NOT always been synonymous. Space science and the space program(s) are two different entities that overlap. The space *program* and the military are definitely joined at the hip. The fact that they "have always been" does not exclude the potential for ANY nation's space program to see and reach further than the imaginations of military contractors and war hawks. However I have to admit that eggheads don't control the ways of the world and that the space programs of the world will continue to be budgeted and managed according to the short-sighted needs of the military. |
