Yeah, I meant real time like it's happening as we speak. Not like watching a chaplin film. I knew what acrid said already. About the stars we see being ancient. I just thought they had some crazy telescope that didn't have to wait to for the light, but yeah. Crazy. The whole idea about the stars we see. Really amazing.

Everything is just so FUCKing huge and enormous out there. And I think there's some sort of probe due to reach Saturn sometime this year, which should be interesting. It seems like huge things like this are never on the news, though... you'd think people would be really interested. Sometimes these stories are relegated to the little sidebars in the big fat weekend papers. These stories you'd think would be... astornomic. I can only seem to find out about these things via the internet, and geeky messageboards.
Or is it just where I live, in a land that TOTALLY lacks any semblance of culture?

Oddly enough most people don't care about grossly expensive missions to lumps of rock and gas in space which have no benefit to their daily lives at all. It's not culture. It's an obscene waste of money while there are starving people and more pressing issues on this planet.

still though, there is SO much to be learned in the universe, to NOT attempt to gain as much knowledge about understanding the universe as we can seems... wrong =p I'm not saying there aren't things on earth that direly need urgent attention, but space exploration should never stop, IMO.

Exactly they spend 14 billion in one year, and Fakeass Bush is proposing to increase that spending by four times...lets not forget this proposal came around the time he had to announce a 0.5 trillion dollar deficit which doesn't take into account the money used on the fake war which is counted as seperate as it is allocated through senate approval. The US economy is currently in all sorts of trouble, and you currently have a bunch of monkeys running it.

And since when did defence and space science become synonymous..And, ecnadniarbsince, why should an English man be so worried about a foriegn governments finances? Unless he has some vested interest. I have money invested in stocks and shares which rely on the US economy, so I do have a vested interest in it. Bush is a prick who needs to learn how to actually budget properly, instead of overspending then lying to gullible members of the public who believe everything the snivelling shitty US media spoon feeds them about how everything is lovely and the US is so great.

but seriously, let's stop bitching about the space program and social welfare when the USA's military budget is sucking up about half of all taxpayer money each year. and if we're going to talk about politics in a thread about space exploration anyway, how's about we get another viable politcal party going here instead one major political party with two fuckin faces? i think the US (and the world) would be way better off if some of our politicians took a look up a telescope every once in a while anyway. maybe then they'd see how fuckin ridiculously small and alone we are out here on earth and would stop trying to outsmart themselves by robbing the poor to gorge the rich by killing the world.
Let's talk about alternative fuel sources. Let's talk about "social responsibilities" rather than "tax burdens". Let's talk about the sad truth that the one dollar a day we pay workers in the third world actually feeds a family, while people in prison here get paid the same amount to work in a privatized prison but recieve free meals and board. Let's talk about Columbus and recorded history being bullshit because history really IS written by the winners. Let's talk about public schooling being a pacifier for a potentially disaffected youth, focusing their rage onto petty, small confrontations about things like homework and cutting class. Let's talk about the media essentially deciding for everyone else who is a worthy candidate to consider and who will be a "waste of a vote". Let's talk about how americans are considered to be completely lazy fucks, but anyone who doesn't subscribe to a brutal work ethic in this country quickly becomes marginalized. Let's talk about the convenient New World Order that "emerged" from the ashes of the cold war to replace it with something far more sinister, something hiding right out in the open, something that is turning america into the modern world's worst nightmare.

I'm sorry for the completely unrelated rant. It was inexcusable. I don't know what cookie jar you're talking about bogala. I'm tempted to speculate, but instead here is something more relevant and coherent than what I've said before:
Space science and what we call "defense" have NOT always been synonymous. Space science and the space program(s) are two different entities that overlap. The space *program* and the military are definitely joined at the hip. The fact that they "have always been" does not exclude the potential for ANY nation's space program to see and reach further than the imaginations of military contractors and war hawks. However I have to admit that eggheads don't control the ways of the world and that the space programs of the world will continue to be budgeted and managed according to the short-sighted needs of the military.
