orange things"

to me it is the bridge between Bytes and Not for Threes, I
think this is where the fight started ;) Ed and Andy decided
to go on with the same style (well kind of) and Ken did not
like that idea so they split up

sorry for late reply. yes, bytes is nice...actually i like
black dog more to plaid, tho it sounds much alike. im quite
sure you're going to like it tho as you always rate music
alike good :)

Spanners and bytes are simply the best thing that Ed an Andy
ever did, quality is extremely high, totally classic!

Ground breaking, innovative, fresh, breathtaking! When i
hear their sound then AE, BOC and AFX seems nothing

i don't think spanners is the bridge between bytes and plaid
albums. on the contrary, spanners is a bit of an odd duck
compared to the rest of the black dog's work (and plaid).
spanners sounds like a laidback mixture of
jazz/triphop/techno/and other electronica from the year
2050. or perhaps spanners can be seen as the black dog going
bola. ok, this is going nowhere, but my point is: spanners
to me sounds like the logical progression from other black
dog, whereas plaid....well plaid is plaid

Im not sure about the historical context as I havent heard
Bytes, but Spanners is great, if youre a Plaid fan. The
sound is very Egypian and Greek with bits of weird rhythms
and Latin rhumba type stuff. Psil-Cosyin and Chesh are the
standouts.

It's not crap, but I'd prefer Spokes or any other recent
Plaid release 100x over Spanners

Spanners also > Plaid.*

It's a pinnacle of melodic, quirky IDM.

but thats just me

Both are essential. But I feel that Spanners is more
album-ey, whereas Bytes feels like a collection of good
tracks.

Just me. ME. ME.

The bottom line is, it's ace. I really liked it at the time,
but I am not so sure it's as timeless a classic as Bytes. It
sounds a bit dated, to me. I know it's an arrestable offence
to use the term "trip-hop" but this sounds very much like
the sound of that time to me. I´m not that keen on Plaid
and much prefer early Black Dog, and even the "Music for
Adverts" album. I agree with RedSky that this has more of a
coherent album feel than "Bytes", but I don't think it's
quite as good. It's still legend though, you can't go wrong
buying it.

No, you can't do wrong on this one. I still listen to it
more often than any electronic music I have post millenium.

Black Dog Productions/Plaid/etc have never bettered
Spanners. The Plaid stuff is nice but just doesn't cut it
like yon olde skool Blacke Dogge. Even Bytes isn't as good.
But only by a very narrow margin. Bytes & Spanners are about
level, and completely brilliant.

(in my opinion)

every black dog release I've bought ahs been a pure classic
(bytes, spanners, peel sessions, music for adverts) and this
has to be one of my favourites

the 5th track f**king owns

but I like 'music for adverts and short films' I think it's
their best work,

when bytes came out it was truly amazing, groundbreaking,
but i do think i prefer spanners over bytes. (i don't even
count Temple of Transparent Balls really, it's only a
contract-fullfilling album and a lot of the tracks are
average)... spanners is black dog at their peak...

yeah but some of the tracks are really good on that release

I believe it was to finish off their deal with GPR, much
like Aphex did with 26 Mixes and Warp. It was apparantly
meant to be called "Temple of Transparent Walls" but they
fell out with GPR and replaced walls with balls...

As for Spanners I think it's a great album. The last "true"
Black Dog album. I do like Bytes more, but this is a worthy
successor. Barbola Work, Further Harm & End of Time are
gorgeous tracks, not forgetting the spine tingling Chesh.

"As for Spanners I think it's a great album. The last

whats the deal with music for adverts and short films? it
was released after spanners wasn't it? it's still black dog
right?

Music For Adverts was Ken Downing alone without Handley and
Turner, and quite frankly my least favourite under the Black
Dog banner

chase the manhattan is sublime. most people producing music
nowdays are complicating too much but still don't come close
to what people were doing 10 or 15 years ago.

this 1994 or 1995?

psil-cosyin could well be the greatest track of all
time...... love the horns at the start, and the way the
beats build from subtle sounds before dropping with the
Black Dog funk

For integration and variation of melody, beats and sounds in
general, very little, if anything, approaches The Black
Dog......... the "musicality" of Spanners is
outstanding.....

I agree with Tolstoyed......... where is the Black Dog of
the 21st century?

Exacto-bloody-fucking-lutely, a few short years ago
people didn't talk about "complexity" in tracks, it was
whether it was fucking any good. Sure you could go all over
the shop, bring in the kitchen sink, switch "melodies"...
but goddamn, it was all part of the music.. the end
in itself wasn't to be "complex". *sigh*

I hate psuedo-complexity paraded for its own sake.

pretty much why some folks don't cope with aphex
twin..they don't see the complexity in his simplicity :)
