quiting smoking advice?

Ok, so Im up to a pack a day, and I smoke weed almost
everyday. Its bad. I want it to stop.

The biggest problem, is that both of my roommates are also
my best friends in Boston. They both smoke like mad...

Ive tried quiting before, (cigs) and it didnt work...
because everywhere you turn, you smell cig smoke, or when we
are chillin, someone undoubtably will have a cig. Also, my
roommates smoke alot of weed.

1. The cigs make me feel crappy.
2. The weed makes me fucking lazy.

How the hell am I supposed to quit when my 2 roommates/best
friends are heavy users? Being surrounded by this stuff 24/7
isnt the best way to stop...

any advice?

have a bubblegum instead of a cigarette. First you can make
it half half... when you want cigarette you eat bubblegum
instead of it, and next time you want (time should past!)
you have a cigarette... if this runs well... make half half
again... after a time you have one cigarette a day, and 3
packs of gums :)

In your case maybe some nicotine gum or "the patch" could
help - when I quit smoking I got so crabby I had to stay
away from people as much as possible, especially smokers.

The other option is to move out! :D

Seriously, cigarettes are so goddamned addictive that the
optimum solution would be to spend a week at a treatment
center. But it just isn't taken seriously enough - possibly
because it gives so little pleasure that it isn't considered
as much of a vice as drugs or alcohol. Yay puritanism!

By all means go for it - the feeling of realizing you don't
have cravings anymore is just incredible.

heres a tip for you....

JUST DO IT. You have control over your arm picking up a pack
of smokes, and lighting a smoke and smoking it. You have
this physical control, so just dont do it. I know it sounds
strange, but thats how I quit, and I had smoked for almost 9
years, a pack a day... easily.

It wasnt even too hard after the first week, just fuckin
dont smoke, its not like your cravings take control of your
movements.

So if you really want to quit, and I mean actually want to
then it should be easy.

I know, hence the ":P"

Seriously though, I'm glad I never started smoking. As of
January 1st this year smoking is prohibited at work and
various public places here (train stations for example). So
many people are/have trying/tried to quit smoking and I'm
just happy I don't have to go through that shit.

Now Im asking for advice.

Will power is the only way...anyone who tells you
differently is lying. If you don't want to stop then don't
stop, and it sounds as though you don't really want to stop
because you wouldn't have given in so easily.

do you feel addicted to the nicotine?

i know for me it's never been that. i've just always enjoyed
smoking. and at work it allows me to really relax and take a
short break. it's a relaxing routine..

I'm down to 2 or 3 cigs a day, I'm not trying to completely
quit but I need to cut back alot cause I'm taking vocal
lessons and I've noticed it definetly hinders me.

what works for me is to keep your mouth busy. eat candy,
chew gum, chew on a pen even. eating sunflower seeds too.
I'm told after around a week you won't feel much craving
anymore so if you really want to you can make it that first
week. Also I'm told that your average cigarette craving
only lasts 30 seconds at a time. so you just have to be
strong for 30 seconds and find something to think about and
find something else to do with your mouth. it's working for
me man.

dirty about "finding something to do with your mouth"

find something to do that will take your mind off smoking.
for instance, i cannot smoke or even think of smoking when
playing video games or writing music.

then again, i smoke like a chimney and my balls hurt, so
maybe i'm wrong.

Just think, hey, i'll probably die soon if I keep this up.

But if you like sitting around being a brain-dead lardass
then continue.

I've never smoked a cigarette in my life, I occasionaly
smoke pot but only when it's around in a social setting and
thats like twice a month. I can't imagine it being
"impossible" to quit, just be like I don't want to do this
anymore, it's killing me in more ways than one it's just not
worth it. ( and it's a waste of $$!!, put your cig money in
a jar everytime u'd go buy a pack, at the end of the year
you'l have a nice chuck of change to go buy sound equip or
go on a mini vacation)

Rational Recovery

Observe your thoughts and feelings, positive and
negative, about drinking or using. Thoughts and feelings
which support continued use are called the Addictive Voice
(AV); those which support abstinence are you. When you
recognize and understand your AV, it becomes not-you, but
"it," an easily-defeated enemy that has been causing you to
drink. All it wants is pleasure. "I want a drink," becomes,
"It wants a drink." Think to yourself, "I will never drink
again," and listen for its reaction. Your negative thoughts
and feelings are your AV talking back to you. Now, think, "I
will drink/use whenever I please." Your pleasant feelings
are also the AV, which is in control. Recovery is not a
process; it is an event. The magic word is "Never," as in,
"I will never drink/use again." Recognition defeats
short-term desire, and abstinence soon becomes effortless.
Complete separation of "you" from "it" leads to complete
recovery and hope for a better life. The only time you can
drink is now, and the only time you can quit for good is
right now. "I will never drink/use again," becomes, "I never
drink now." It's not hard; anyone can do it.

(written from the perspective of drinking and drug abuse but
it helped me quit smoking)

I have quit after smoking a pack a day for 5 years. My
advice. Quit smoking the weed. Then take your time. Don't be
mean. Grow up. Move away from your friends.. Quit smoking in
isolation. Maybe move to your parents for 6 months or
something..Quiting ciggs is different than quitting weed.
