Most Djs are not musicians

most of them just spin and mix other peoples music, how can
they say they are musicians?.. they arent.... its so
pathetic, some Djs i know make their own tunes and spin
their own stuff, thats totally different, but for the last
10 years its been like a wave of Djs... who the fuck cares!
move over for the real musicians.

I remember being in high school, so many kids were boasting
about being a DJ, theyd be like "oh wow, check out my mix on
this moloko track, I sped it up.. and..."... GAY.

ahem.

djs are musicians. being a musician isn't all about playing
guitar (lots of people who play instruments think that
people who make music without playing instruments aren't
musicians, but that is WRONG!)

I would say DJ Shadow, RJD2, Aim, RZA, Dj Premiere, Ralph
Myerz and such are musicians.

There are a lot of un-inventive dj's out there. There isnt
much skill involved in beatmatching, actually blending the
tracks with eq, and filtering, knowing how to fit certain
records together, is the challenge for most house/techno
dj's.
I would call turntablists musicians, they play the decks
like an instrument.

DJs are essenstial for presenting the music to the people.
what's so bad about that?

you mean club DJs? You actually need lots of skill to
beatmix! Those guys in the corner of the club don't actually
call themselves musicians when playing in the club. When
they are playing in the club, they are DJs in the
"record-player" sense of the word, but there is so much more
to djing.

I tend to agree Ishkur's (www.ishkur.com) view of the
subject. Turntablists are musicians, people who play one
record after another aren't. Simple.

Of course, it's not actually that clear cut, what about
people like the chemical brothers who synch a drum machine
to a track playing, sometimes even soloing the drum machine.
It can also be argued that the use of back cutting and
looping (even if done using a CD deck with CDs rather than
manually with two records), especially when combined with FX
units is at least as valid a musician as a remixer.

Contrary to popular belief and sadly, common practice, there
is a lot of room for creativity in DJing (House DJs who
simply beat mix records, which are, for the most part,
within 3% pitch range of each other are largely to blame
IMO). Last night I was practicing beat juggling two copies
of the same record. I let the melody kick in and as they
were chords held for a bar each, it was possible to play a
bar at a time, whilst re-cuing the other record. The end
result was an ever changing loop of the 4 initial chords,
but being played in a different order- creation of a new
melody.

Taken to extremes like Richie Hawktin's decks EFX and 909
alubm, where sections of records used are little more than
brief samples, effected and re-pitched so much as to be
unrecognisable, it's more like sample based music than
DJing.

As an aside, I started making electronic music from ready
made samples in ACiD. Most peopl would consider the end
result a greater display of musicality than simply DJing.
I'd disagree- DJing is combining samples together, but there
is the added element of beat mixing, which in a program like
Live or Acid is taken care of for you.

Im a club dj. I only feel satisfied with my performance if
im doing something more technical, involving more than two
turntables.

Thats just me though, ive seen some amazing sets performed
with two decks and a bunch of 12's

Yes, it's hard to strike the balance between tinkering
enough to feel like you're earning your keep and not messing
up the good bits of records :)

I like doing little tricks like mixing a well known track
(a) into something else (b)fairly early on in the track,
then mix a remix of (a) back in as the main track, then back
to (b), before going back to the original, well known
version of (a) for the rest of the track. It's great to see
peoples response as you're presenting something they're
familair with and dancing to and then suddenly it changes to
a slightly different version. Heck, even holding the pause
after "beastie boys know to let the beat..." (in
Intergalactic)for a bar before letting "...drop" come in has
a massive effect.

Has anyone heard Now, Listen by DJ Food + DK? I have a new
found respect for DJ'ing after that... some awesome mixes
going on there.

Yeah! the solid steel mixes are quality.

I put a lot of preparation into my sets. I re-edit a lot of
tracks to add a personal element to them and use an fx unit
+ a drummachine, to add extra beats and bleeps or improvise
over records.

I think theres a story in the CD book about how they needed
a place to get together as Q-bert got banned from the DMC
compitition in the mid 90's for being too intimadating.

Sadly a fair number of DJs have ego problems and will say
that mixing this house track and this house track is a real
talent and an art form, etc etc.

and those 2 tracks will be exactly the same aswell BAH!

I really like hip-hop djs and anyone with the ability to
scratch. That stuff is awesome!!

well there must be a difference between someone who creates
their own stuff on the computer (ie: reason, acid, floops
and what not) or the synths, drum machines and all that fun
stuff... ...there must be a difference between them and
people who just spin records... I mean ive been to lots of
clubs all over and most of them just play other peoples
music.... thats a talent, yes I can easily see that its not
very easy to just go up and do, but its not MAKING music....

BTW... I didnt really mean bigger names that actually make
their own stuff, I thought I had made that clear... im
mostly talking about just ordinary people, no one
famous..... every city and town has lots of people who call
them sell DJs.... but they dont make their own stuff, so in
my eyes they arent actually musicians, just really good at
beatmatching and playing other poeples stuff.

not music artists.

Beatmatching is simple. Fucking simple. Any DJ who thinks
they're great because they can do it is a fool! I can beat
match no problem and more or less beat match anything. I
can't scratch however which means I'm not a proper DJ. I
just can't scratch. I'm crap at it. I've tried and I've
given up. Doing stilly mixes is where my talent lies. You
want Betty Boo and >[]? You're on! I wish I could scratch
though.

Q-Bert is God!

qbert is amazing yes.. indeed... ateast hes somewhat playing
the instrument, not beatmatching and not playing just other
records all the time.

djs really can stick it in and break it off, in regards to
trying to make you think they are musicians.

giginger: as you have trouble scratching, others will say
"scratching is fucking easy!" and as you say "beatmixing is
easy," others will say "fuck! i can't fucking beatmix!"

i'm buying my first turntable on monday, i hope! a technics

myself beatmixing, scratching, juggling and all the other
techniques!

yeah but if one ONLY DJS and doesnt make their own music to

is a big difference.

big: nope.. not frustrated. just wanted to discuss it thats
all..... I mean they obvioulsy arent musicians if they are
not actually creating the beats, noises.. vocals and all
that... .if they are just playing someone elses records...
then they are DJS.. not musicians.. a difference there is...
and that was my point of discussion

i know, but it would be okay to be a bit pissed about it
from time to time
i like being pissed about something from time to time, some
people dont understand that fully though, but it's healthy

so i met this guy once that had been a dj in ibiza and stuff
(they called him the spanish word for rings or something
because he had those on) and he was telling about his
adventures into making music. he knew this great cd with
hundreds of good beats that he used to put strings over or
something. i didnt have much to discuss with him after that
