What about DJs who make rhythms by re-arranging existing breaks (Just like you'd do with Dr. Rex/Recycle, but done in real time)? Surely all they're using is the drum sounds?
Similarly, with a pair of constant tone records, it's possible to play completely new melodies (using +-50% to alter the pitch and the crossfader to alter duration).
So, imagine a DJ records (to say a multitrack recorder or a HD) a track consisting of a rythm track, a melody and a bassline made as I've described... surely that's a legitimate, "original" creation? The only source sounds they've used are: A constant tone (like a synth would use) a kick drum sample, a hi hat sample and a snare. 4 samples in all...

Yes, people applying the DJ mentality to music making is how sample CD manufacturers (and Ejay) get their cash ;)

rearranging beats, and sampling notes is making music. you just use sounds you think sound cool (and you can't make them on your own without them sounding like crap!)

so how'd you use loudboxer from speedy j live? that'd be pretty improvisational skills, or may you use it at home like it's yours?

I read that Fingathing (on grand central) use only turntables and a double bass to record their tracks. All the beats are scratched and chopped in then built up with a multitrack. That must take a lot of effort

I've seen Fingathing live. Great live show and yes, they do just use a turntabilist, sampling drum machine and double bass player. Peter Parker (the turntabilist) is fantastically disciplined in his playing style... he plays tracks scratch for scratch perfectly as if he were performing "normal" non-improv music. If there weren't the VJ's cameras showing close ups of his hands I'd think he was miming, it was that good!
