Whats the best Vietnam Movie?

I`ve only really seen The Deer Hunter and Apocalypse Now.
Oh and Good Morning Vietnam but I don`t think that counts.

So what do you reckon is the best `Nam movie?

Or even the best war movie.

Cross of Iron with James Coburn is a classic.

yeah i only just saw Apocalypse now yesterday. Amazing and
frightening. i think it displayed the true horror of war. It
was awesome in it`s literal sense.

look at this CIA file on Vietnam. Read the part
about Background.

"US economic and military aid to South Vietnam grew through
the 1960s in an attempt to bolster the government, but US
armed forces were withdrawn following a cease-fire agreement
in 1973"

Unreal

full metal jacket, apocalype now, deer hunter & good morning
vietnam are all great films.

jacobs ladder i don't think has anything to do with vietnam
at all. i thought it was about what happens to you just
before you die.

Jacob's Ladder is about a guy dying from a wound sustained
while fighting in Vietnam. but yeah, it's not really a
Vietnam movie as much as it's a movie about a guy
hallucinating as he dies.

in the perspective of a vietcong

what on earth are you talking about? maybe you should watch
the film again. it is nothing to to with any war

i've seen it many times.

it starts out with a bunch of his fellow soldier buddies
going crazy and killing eachother.

he gets stabbed by another american soldier.

he fades in and out of reality.

he dreams that the reason for his hallucinations is because
the govt is testing a drug called "the Ladder" on the
soldiers because the war is not going well.

so yes, it has much reference to the vietnam war.

maybe you should watch it again.

i knew this was going to happen!

the films isn't about flashbacks. none of it is real, its a
dream. during his death he lives out the rest of his life.

Jacob is confused as he begins to see hellish creatures in
his normal world, as his dead son comes back to see him and
he's living with a girlfriend instead of his wife. He begins
to realise that these devils are not chasing him in order to
destroy him, they are angels, freeing Jacob from this earth.
And, at the end of the film, they do just that.

evolume is right. vietnam is CONSTANTLY referenced in
Jacob's Ladder. It's in the beginning of the film, the end
of the film and frequently in between. there are flashbacks
to vietnam, conversations with lawyers, shrinks,
girlfriends, war buddies, thugs, drug scientists and
chiropractors about vietnam. then there is the coda after
the film and before the credits that briefly mentions
theorized government drugs tested on american soldiers.

incidentally i have an older friend i went to film school
with who is a vietnam vet. he has had four children die
before the age of nine. all from chromosome damage
consistent with the symptoms of radiation poisoning. he and
many of his company were exposed to 'agent orange' in
vietnam. the government still admits nothing.

offline herbwest from Seattle (United States) on 2004-01-21 13:13 [#01043096]
Points: 418 Status: Lurker

it's definately not a film about vietnam though.

offline tragedy from Gloucester (United States) on 2004-01-21 13:15 [#01043101]

but the movie does start out with him fighting, and then
goes straight to him at his girlfriends house.... i agree
with earth leakage that the film is not about vietnam, but
it does have lots of refferences, therefor i agree with both
of you.

yes, i know.

but you said it "it is nothing to to with any war."

and that was an incorrect statement.

I know the movie is supposed to be a dream. it is a dream
he has while he is dying from a wound sustained during
combat

that is why it ends with a couple army guys bagging him up
or whatever. if he's dead, how could he dream that? he
can't because that part is not a dream it is the reality.
