and now it all apears like this:

what could I do to get it back to normal?

if you've already tried switching fonts, try opening it with WordPad.
if it opens all glichy in wordpad, i'd say it's probably a corrupt file.

are you sure it's not some email virus or something?

your problem might be, since it's a .doc document, that your version of MS Word is too old!
yes, and that the wordfile you have might be saved in a newer format.

highlight it all, and change the font to something you have.
