any idea how popular he is?

i always thought of him as an pop artist, but apperantly he
isn't all that popular...i check his message board here and
there and there are like 10 people posting there!?!?!?

im sure if half of massive attack fans would be tricky's
fans he would be very popular...but apperantly that isn't
so

any idea on this?

very popular.

at least he is in spain and italy

apperantly there aren't any geeks among his fans then :)

oo, and just how popular are massive attack? :) let's say,
compared to afx...

i know the tricky you mean.

think his low popularity (if an artists popularity can be
gauged by the number of people that post on their website..
perhaps its just a really obnoxious website) has something
to do with the fact that his material has rapidly decreased
in quality over the years.. in my opinion.

he made some valid contributions to massive attack's first 2
albums (before they began letting themselves down a bit)..
maxinquaye was a great album, has a really smouldering feel
to it..
pre millennial tension did nothing for me..
angels with dirty faces was just trying too hard to be
difficult - in spite of a few inspired moments.
less and less martina topley bird with each lp.
then i heard a few tracks from the next lp.. which just put
me off even more, and i've not really listenened ut for any
releases by him since.

what could have been.. *sigh*

maxinquaye IS a sexy album though..
reminds me of hot summer days & lusting after girls..

pity that tricky turned out to be so inconsistent really.

seemed to coincide with him moving to new york, drinking
coffee in macy gray's café & not collaborating with martina
topley-bird anymore.

He's pretty popular, I know quite a lot of people that know
who he is but have no clue about, ahem, IDM.

its hardly 'idm'.. if you're going to include afx in that
bracket - tricky & aphex twin aren;t even slightly
comparable. in that case 'idm' means absolutely nothing
(marginally less than it means now).

what i understood was that he was surprised these people he
knows are aware of tricky, despite the fact that they know
nothing about 'idm'..
but tricky isn't really 'idm (whatever that is)..
and if he's not saying that tricky is 'idm' then his
statement doesnt really mean anything.. does it? mentionning
'idm' becomes irrelevant.

how popular is 'idm'?..

offline tolstoyed from the ocean on 2004-01-08 17:32 [#01024111]

well, i got the picture of how popular apperantly idm is, in
years i spent on this message board...ophecks posts here
pretty regulary as well, so im sure he also knows the same
stuff about popularity of idm.

i also always thought that tricky is a very popular
artist...unlike "idm" artists

im also quite certain (and i also know ppl that know tricky
but haven't got a clue of who "idm" artists are.

what i get from that is, that tricky is quite a popular
artist...i can't tell his sales figures from this, but it
gives me at least some idea.

but the whole thing (not just your post) seems a remarkably

Narco-Erotic music at it's finest...who else comes even
close?...Massive are cool I agree, but their tunes never get
near the crackedup-smackup feel of Tricky...

The double tracking of Tricky and Martina on maxinquaye was
simply perfect...no doubt it'll be viewed as a key 90s album
in the decades to come; the guy takes chances with the
expectations of his audience - the true mark of a real
Artist to this mind...

what can I say, I love the guys voice... I have been meaning
to buy one of his albums for years, but they're always so
damn expensive here...

his parts on Blue Lines are some of my favorite parts from
that album!

Maxinquaye is really nice but overrated (in that everyone
talks about how great it is and complained to the point that
they basically drove him away from the more experimental
shit he was doing that was really good...)
Pre-Millenium Tension is aweome
so is Angels With Dirty Faces (i certainly didn't feel that
way at first, but the more i listened to it, the better it
got)

and so is the self-titled album he released under the name
"Nearly God", which was between Maxinquaye and PMT.... and
features collaborations with Bjork, and other coolios...

after that his output is pretty dodgy... geared to all the
whiners who wanted more maxinquaye... and it's shite... they
basically ruined it for the rest of us though... there's a
handful of decent tracks on "juxtapose"... but that's about
it...

offline tolstoyed from the ocean on 2004-01-08 19:40 [#01024241]

my favourite (by far) is definitely angels with dirty faces.
there isn't a bad track on this one! i liked it since the
1st time i've heard it...i got maxinquaye after angels...,
and is probably my 2nd favourite. actually i love pretty
much everything he released before juxtapose, couple of
tunes on juxtapose are brilliant tho and i like some tunes
on blowback as well. i've heard vulnerable only once
rapidly, but i wasn't that impressed - but i am going to get
it eventually and check it properly.
i love his recent back to mine compilation tho! the man has
great taste!

he put out a really good track 2 summers ago that i really
liked. there's some video for it too. i think the song was
blowback, or maybe that's the album it's on.

had i bothered to read all of the posts, i would've seen
that blowback is an album, not a song.

I was just using it as a reference point, I know he's not
Intellectual Dork Music. Don't read too much into that
statement. I could have said he was as popular as, I dunno,
Placebo or something. Tolstoyed was wondering how popular he
was so I just made some ''irrevelent'' off the cuff
statement. Our messageboard is bustling, and the more
popular Tricky's is dead. Just lots of useless comparisons.

best thing about angels with dirty faces was the grimey,
bluesy feel to it.
but if maxinquaye felt hot & smouldering.. angels had a much
cooler, isolated feel to it.

im listening to "christiansands", damn, one of the darkest
tunes ever...i'll probably go through all his albums today,

i really can't think of another artist that put out that
many excellent songs...shame he's into "happy happy" music

maxinquaye.... fuking hot shyt
pre-millenium tension...still nice one, but not so catchy
blowback..a little bit commercial as many people say but I
like most of the tracks
nearly god...I have it in my collection for a long time but
I still haven´t listened to it more than twice
Juxtapose...ehm...maybe two of them...
....and so...
KarmaComa remixes are greatt..

i couldn't agree more with Jand. (see above)

he never seems to be that popular but he is well known. I
always think of him as being the under-dog of his music
