surely you must remember the fuss that surrounded
maxinquaye when it was released in '95?
i'd hardly call tricky underrated in light of that.
he was really hyped up at that time, along with massive
attack (who had just released protection) and
portishead, who had just put out their debut.
mo-wax were getting recognised too, and lavelle had actually
tried to sign tricky & portishead. so, at they time, he was
pretty highly rated i reckon. a lot of people knew who he
was; i guess he just put them off with his darker, more
idiosyncratic releases.. and then lost everyone with his
last few releases.
maxinquaye is still my favourite. i liked angels
with dirty faces
too, but none of his later releases
have fulfilled the potential of his debut.

pity.

From the look of this thread I think I am the only one here
who likes his most recent stuff. I have a lot of time for
Tricky

i dunno.. maybe i'm missing the point.

i haven't heard his latest album.. but when he moved to NYC
he just seemed to lose that grimey, crackly, off-kilter
groove that maxinquaye had. it all sounded as though it
could fall apart at any moment.
last i heard of his stuff, he was trying too hard to sound
like the american MCs & producers that had inspired him -
and it wasn't really working.

hmm, i've listened to vulnerable the other day, and it isn't
all that bad...infact there are quite some pretty great
songs on it!
looks like he's changing back to good after the blowback,
which was quite disappointing. this new italian singer he
got for vulnerable is great (and hot).
