Immortality

If you were given the chance to be Immortal, would you take
it, why, and what would you use your Immortality to
accomplish?

I wouldn't take it. I couldn't bear to see the ones I love
age and die while I stayed the same.

What are you talking about? We already have the chance to be
immortal.

depends. would I stop aging? would I be COMPLETELY immortal
(would I not die even if someone ate me?)?

I doubt I would. And I don't think you can really live
forever, because, with an infinite amount of time, you'll
end up knowing absolutely everything and you'll have no
motivation to do anything anymore.

Harder question : would you prefer to die right now or to be
immortal ?

as long as I was garaunteed to remeain healthy all the time,
then yes, would I get bored with life? perhaps, but I could
just keep learning, I could start reading all the books in
the world, learn everything, do everything, basically do all
the things you can't do in a lifetime

i don't know.
my only fear of death at this points exist in the fact that
i won't be able to do everything i want to do: travel, etc
etc...

and i'd hate to see people i love dying. but after a couple
of 100 years you'll get over it and find some new ones.

and just because you arre immorrtal you would still need a
job, who's saying you could afforrt to do all the things you
want.
you would forreverr be having to keep up with the latest
advances in technology which is harrd when you've not been
brrought up on it.
i bet all the trramps i see arre in fact just immorrtals
who've been been left behind in the race.

if you were immortal you would have enough time to figure
out a way to become rich,

humans adapt, so if you lived forever you would adapt to it,
I don't reckon things would get worse,.. I think they'd stay
the same,.. just like they are now,.. except forever, I
don't tihnk that too much about your mental state would
change over time, there is always stuff to keep you
stimulated

offline giginger from Milky Beans (United Kingdom) on 2003-12-30 06:41 [#01009993]

If you were immortal you'd have to create a new identity
every so often otherwise the authorities would be on to you
and they'd perform tests on you till you died....... which
is impossible if you're immortal. Unless it's immortality in
the sense that you'll never die a natural death.

I would definately not turn down the chance to be immortal,
are you nuts?!

Think of all the things you could do! Drive like a maniac,
become a superspy or commando or something, it wouldn't
matter because you'd have no fear of getting hurt. More
importantly though, aren't you dying to know where
technology will go hundreds of years from now? I want space
travel!!!!!

"with an infinite amount of time, you'll end up knowing
absolutely everything and you'll have no motivation to do
anything anymore."

> i don't know... wouldn't you forget?

(and also you don't need to know everything to have no
motivation at all ; ))

"humans adapt, so if you lived forever you would adapt to
it,"

> i'm not sure we could adapt ourselves to something like
this...... humans adapt, yeah, but there are limits to
adaptation too, and eternity has no limits at all...

anyway i would prefer to die right now and i wouldn't want
immortality, it would be horribly boring, infinitely boring
even probably, also horrible to see everyone you like die
before you (you'd probably end up misanthropic avoiding
every contact - same thing with objects, they'd all decay
before you), plus i already don't feel well with myself now,
i could never bear eternity being myself, it would be like
being locked with someone you don't like forever...

offline uzim on 2003-12-30 09:27 [#01010222]
Points: 17716 Status: Lurker

i'm not interested in doing everything, knowing
everything.... (besides i'm not sure being immortal would
enable you to do this: you would have all the future before
you, yeah, but you'd miss all the past... and you couldn't
be everywhere at the same time so you'd also miss lots and
lots of parts of the future, you'd only see just a very
little bit of it actually.... - and knowing all? only if you
had an infinite memory/brain! would this be included in an
"infinite package"? - doing all? immortality doesn't include
super powers....)

would you be immortal as in invincible, or would you have an
achilles heel (i.e. stake through the heart, decapitation by
another immortal as in highlander, etc.)

If I were invincible and immortal I would hop on to a
spaceship and fly straight into a blackhole to see what
would happen. Would my physical body be indestructable
(would my physical body be reduced to a singularity while an
'essence' remained connected to the material world or would
my body defy physics, and if so what effect would this have
on the black hole? Would I just not fit into it, or would
it cause some sort of reversal of the laws of physics which
would unravel the entire universe?)

What would happen to you when the sun swallows up the earth
and eventually burns out?

Would you live in the middle of a burnt out star or
something? For ever?

I'd want to know that kinda stuff first!

Yeah I'd rather be immortal in a reincarnating way (like I
am now) - Living lots of short lives with some kind of
progression towards something.

offline J Swift from United Kingdom on 2003-12-30 09:58 [#01010272]

I'd like to live at this age in this life for a few thousand
years though, definetly.

Also, what if the world ended, would I be forced to remain
immortal, alone until the end of time (assuming time ended).
Could I will my self to die eventually? What if I became
stranded in space? If I couldn't die, would I have to stay
there forever? Maybe flying into a black hole wouldn't be a
good idea ... maybe swimming to the bottom of the deepest
trench in the ocean, and then timing how long it took me to
swim to the top, sprint to Mt. Everest, then climb that!

something

Immortality means you could never die...it makes no
guarantees over quality of life. You could drive like a
maniac, end up having your arms and legs cut off and still
be alive forever It also doesn't mean you can't be hurt or
feel pain.

I wouldn't take it, unless I could end it at any point. But
it's never that simple, eh? If I had to live forever no
matter what, forget it. Too much pain and anguish, and I
don't want to be there for the apocalypse. What will happen
to me after? Will I just be floating in Limbo?

What'd happen - You'd stay on earth until life on this
planet died out - I'd give it 10,000 years tops, but it
could even happen in our lifetime...

Then you'd have to find another inhabited planet to hang
about on.

So you'd have to get into space and travel...

The furthest point in the universe from us now is 15 billion
light years away - 15 billion years travelling at the speed
of light - Which you wouldn't be..

So in your life you'd spend billions and billions of years
floating around in isolation - Then you'd forget how to act
around other people, become a total sociopath most likely...
Then, if you were lucky, every few billion years you might
find a planet which contained life... But then it would get
eaten up soon enough and you'd go back to floating around
space.

You would spend 99.9999999999% of your life floating - Not
being able to eat, breathe air, talk to anyone, etc...

No I'm talking crap actually, you'd have to build a space
ship - You'd have long enough to do it - Until the end of
human kind - That could be cool... You'd have to take a
bunch of people with you - Keep the human race going in
space and just float around...

Still, nothing could be worse than NEVER being able to leave
your life.
