Living on hype...

As much as most of the people here seem to want to beleive
they are something more that the average media manipulated
chart music listener, I have noticed that many of you still
pander to hype even if it is in a more marginal scene. What
do you think? Does this apply to you?

imo everyone follows some version of hype, whether it be
from MTV or the black rimmed glasses elitist crowd at the
local coffeeshop.

I don't follow hype because I don't listen to anyone.

I'm a slave to hype.
I believed that the Matrix sequels would be good for
instance. How wrong I was. I was dragged into the hype for
Smojphace too. I should follow your example but I'm too
gullible to not fall for the hype again.

is that good or bad? :P

seriously; i think that interacting with your environment
implicitly means that to a certain degree you're a slave to
some hype or another. you just can't escape it. maybe living
in syberia would help, but that would be pretty lonely.

Its not always good not following hype because you can find
it difficult to interact with people when you haven't got a
clue what the latest hype is...which is why most people
think I am strange, because I am a loud mouth who doesn't
know about anything in the charts or on TV or in the Cinema
so basically I spend my life talking shite :D

seriously, think how much time would be wasted if nobody
followed recomendations from their respective peer groups,
and/or people whose opinions they respected.

everyone would have to listen to every single new album in
order to decide whether they were going to like it or not.

constant reinvention of the wheel.

yeah i realized this recently too. seems that people who are
so adamant about not buying the mainstream hype get conned
into listening (and then proclaiming that it is better than
all) to shite. not that i'm saying mainstream is good, but i
can think of a lot of music that is more mainstream (not
necessarily top 40 but not totally unheard of either) that
beats a lot of the reccommendations on here. and yeah i
agree with godel, you have to get your recommendations from
somewhere, it doesn't matter as long as you know what you're
buying into. and if you don't take advice from anyone then
you're just plain lost.

if its good, and you think its good.. then thats all that
matters.
i get so fed up with pigeonholing styles, and scenes.. and
mainstream & underground & selling out.
none of this means anything.
whether a track sells 100 or 1,000,000 it doesn't change the
track itself.

"I don't follow hype because I don't listen to anyone."

..how can you expect anyone to listen to you?
surely its all about 2way communication?

Nah, I'm pretty good at ignoring hype- didn't buy smojphace.
I'm looking forwards to playing the new f-zero, but if it's
gash I'll admit that it is.

The are leaders and followers...the world has enough
followers for me to be successful :D

But I accept there is a difference between accepting
recommendations and buying into hype.

Smojpahce is a perfect example of buying into the hype...if
it wasn't RDJ how many people would have finished listening
to each track once, never mind spending good cash out on
it???

Oh and anyone who replies back to this saying they loved
Smojphace when they first heard it are lying twats...and it
goes back to the old arguement that if you REALLY want to
like something to fit in then you will find things to like
about it, and that can be nothing more than familiarity or
the feeling you are something more than other people because
you "get it" and they don't.

Actually more than hype there is a lot of what I call "anti
hype" in the world at the moment. People putting down
acheivements of others for irrelivant reasons.

the only hype i can remember really getting into was LOTR,
and the amount of hype was appropriate.

We need a man that is simple perfection
There's nothing that's harder to find
Someone to lead us protect us and feed us
And help us to make up our minds
We need a man that's sophisticated
Quiet and strong and well educated
Where to go what to do
Could it be somebody super like you

We need a man that can stand as a symbol
And symbols have got to be tall
Someone with taste and the tiniest waist
With his help would not life be a ball
If we had fun he would not restrain us
If we got caught he would just explain us
Where to go what to do
Could it be somebody super like you

We pledge allegiance to his gracefulness
and charming manners
With a voice that's both sides choice
he'll bring us to our knees in admiration
He is king of all who see and hear his
perfect pitch
And more surprises when his time is
come a stallion rises

We need a man with a head on his
shoulders a nose that is simply divine
Hollywood smile and a perfect profile
and with eyes that would sparkle and shine
Long flowing hair for a crowning glory
There'd be a man who could tell our story
Where to go what to do
Could it be somebody super like you

We pledge allegiance to his gracefulness
and charming manners
With a voice that's both sides choice
he'll bring us to our knees in admiration
He is king of all who see and hear his
perfect pitch
And more surprises when his time is
come a stallion rises
Rises... rises... rises

Yes hype does get you into something. Though it doesn't
definitively make you dig it but it definitely has
influence. For instance everyone use to go on about V Snares
I listented to it and I just couldn't get it as time went on
and more hyping ensued I listened again and eventually I
heard stuff which I began to appreciate then I began to
appreciate more of his stuff. I still don't know ultimately
where I stand on his music sometimes you listen to it and
quite frankly it just sounds like noise. Personally I think
people like Luke Vibert are better simply 'cause they create
cool tunes and funky beats at the same time. I like V Snares
but hype doesn't always effect you definitively.

i don't think the fact that everyone checked out afx was
hype... the vast majority of these people checked it because
they've heard and loved tonnes and tonnes of afx tunes... if
you like an artist, obviously you're going to be curious
about their new release...

hype is more like me loving the Rapture 'cause all the
trendy hipsters go on and on about how great it is... (it's
decent... not fantastic)

as for anti-hype: that's the kind of thing people cite
against my taste all the time, because they assume that I
listen to the obscure music that i listen to just to be
different (because they can't relate to it on any level, and
assume that the rest of the world must feel the same
way).... and i'm sure that part of me is drawn to things
that are different... but there is also a large part of me
that is drawn towards music that most people just don't
consider music...

i dont watch tv or listen to radio...i have no idea what
music is popular right now, appart from people everyone talk
about (r.williams, britney spears, kylie, radiohead,...) but
i hardly know any of their songs
i bought smojphace and i dont think nothing much of it
i bought blur's last album, suga babes, i buy every new
radiohead album, and probably some other hyped albums

not knowing what's popular doesn't make you better than
people who do. burying your head in the sand won't make you
pure.. or smarter for that matter. good taste comes from
having a broad cultural base. i find it impossible to give
any credit to the opinions of the kind of person who only
listens to one kind of music, reads one type of novel or
watches one genre of film. it's possible to be aware of
what's going on outside your sphere of interest & not be
coerced into liking it simply because of its popularity.
surely not everyone is that weak..?
besides, as others have pointed out, being a victim of hype
doesn't just apply to whats being played on the radio or tv.
every 'scene' has elements of it which are hyped up
(possibly beyond what theyre actually worth).. you just have
to make up your own mind.
not liking something just because its talked about & a
majority of people like it is nothing more than cutting your
nose off to spite your face.

im actually not avoiding anything popular, if i hear it and
i like it it doesnt matter if its michael jackson (i like
some of his tunes btw)...
but there are so many albums from the stuff i like being
released that im not really interested in listening whats
popular this days, as i dont have enough time to check the
music i like as it is...
if any of this mainstream/popular music turns out good i
surely read about it here and give it a listen, and buy the
record if i like it...
