Reason 2.5 questions

i just got it as an early christmas present. I've been
using mostly Acid Pro up till now. but now that i have
reason, i figure i ought to learn how to use it as well.

so a couple questions i have right off the bat:

1. can you record in live parts and arrange them in Reason?
In acid, i often record in bass guitar parts, turntablism
parts, keyboard parts etc. then i add effects and such to
them. can i do something like this in reason?

2. can i use Reason to control my Roland Juno 106 keyboard?

3. can i use my roland juno 106 to control the synths in
Reason? I do not have a midi controler.

these are the questions i have for now. i will no doubt
come up with some other questions as i poke around this
thing.

1. You can't record them straight into Reason. You need to
use another audio program. You can load them into Reason
after using the samplers though :)

2. I don't know.

3. Same again. I'd need to know more about the actual
hardware. Is it a MIDI device?

yeh its midi

but its an antique. talkin' mid 1980's but it has midi in
and out.

so a follow up question, if i were to record audio parts
into say.. soundforge, will that run with reason
simultaneously without too much hassle?

you will be able to control reasons synths with your juno.
not too sure about the other way though.

fruity has 'dashboard' which will let you build an interface
for any midi synth. aint too sure what reason offers there.

If it's MIDI then you can trigger Reason with it :)

Not sure about running it with Soundforge. If it's a ReWire
program then yeah it'll run but further than that I'm
clueless. Sorry.

so what is ReWire anyway? is it worth buying? Will it allow
me to record live parts? what's it gonna cost me?

thanks for all the advice thus far.

man, the manual that comes with reason is kinda crappy isn't
it?

well kinda.

Igf you have any other questions e-mail me.

You will not be able to control the juno with reason.

Oh yeah and you wanted to record in soundforge and have
reason running at the same time so you know what your doing
but soundforge is not a rewire program, but you can load the
audio you make in soundfore into the samplers really easily.

You can control reason devices' parameters with a h/w midi
controller- I sometimes use a phatboy to speed up patch
creation.

thanks for all the input. i am slowly plugging away at this
thing now. not really making any tracks, just kinda poking
and prodding and stringing cables here and there and such.

looks like i'll have to stick with Acid Pro though for my
main stuff since i rely heavily on my bass guitar and
turntable and my juno.

But mayhaps i can work something out with this Reason stuff
or start a side project or some shit. hmm.
but hey! got the software, might as well use it. more tools
= more fun

hevquip: hardware is expensive. i choose to use the tools
available to me which happens to be a bit of both.

There is quite alot you will be missing out on if you stick
with acid, mind you if you write something dope in reason
you can always export the audio and use it in acid. However
you use it, it is a very good tool to have as it is
amazingly flexible and stable.

yeah, but i'm like a ninja with Acid where as with Reason,
i'm like a.. um.. like the opposite of a ninja.. like hmmm..
like a guy who is like out of shape and really clumsy.

C. Ling Tile: So, Ghost. We meet again.

Space Ghost: C. Ling!

C. Ling Tile: That's right. I'm back.

Space Ghost: The pleasure is mine.

C. Ling Tile: No, no, no. Correction: The pleasure is
all for me! (He starts spraying water on Space Ghost's head)
Sprinkler! Sprinkler!

Space Ghost: No!

C. Ling Tile: Ho-HO!

Space Ghost: Tap water!

C. Ling Tile: (laughs) Now I will freeze you! At 60
degrees! Cool air vent! Go! (starts blowing air on Space
Ghost)

Space Ghost: Agh!

C. Ling Tile: Go together!

Space Ghost: He's lowering the temperature of my
body!

C. Ling Tile: Oh-ho-ho!

Space Ghost: It's all right. Contact Facilities!

C. Ling Tile: You...(bangs Space Ghost on the
head)...deal with it!

Space Ghost: Son of a...

C. Ling Tile: Ha ha ha!

Space Ghost: Time to hang, Tile!

C. Ling Tile: Asbestos powder! (Start spraying powder
in Space Ghost's face)

Space Ghost: Agh!

C. Ling Tile: Get up! Get up and face the powder!

Space Ghost: No!

C. Ling Tile: (sniffs) Mmmm! Mmmmm! Suck it in,
Ghost! And prepare to die!

Space Ghost: Not while I'm alive! Medical school!

(Space Ghost summons a glowing ball of energy)

C. Ling Tile: Hey! Stop!

Moltar: Space Ghost has mastered the five magics!

Space Ghost: May cause drowsiness!

C. Ling Tile: No!

Space Ghost: From your coffin!

C. Ling Tile: You don't have to throw that!

Space Ghost: Because you're dead! (Space Ghost throws the
ball, causing C. Ling Tile to burst into flames)

C. Ling Tile: Hey! That hurts! No!

Space Ghost: Well, it looks like C. Ling will fit in
perfectly...on the roof...in jail!

Zorak: He sure will, Space Ghost!

Space Ghost: Moltar, that's one tile that needs to be
replaced!

Zorak: It sure does, Space Ghost!

xammax,
i am a big fan of SGCTC but i don't see how this thread has
anything in common with the tag team fucking thread.

i had a legitimate, musically related question.

but yo, that is some funny shit so.. hmm kudos..?

my funniest memory of SGCTC is Brak's peanutbutter jelly
sandwich song. you got the lyrics to that?

I reckon the "Don't touch me" song by Brak is quite
tickling.

Actually, all of his songs are hilarious...

i just installed live recently too, i dabbled in it for
about 5minutes but it seems pretty cool eh

in live is there a way to fade from one reason track to
another? I dont think there is, but wondering.

thanks

hmm
no i dont think so. i think sound coming in from reason can
only be routed to one Live track. but, i'm kinda a novice
at both programs so don't take my word for it.

yeah i didnt think it was possible, but it would be cool if
it could :p

you could automate the volume in both tracks. as long as you
have enough ram to handle it...

this might help you, i don't know. but Reason does have 64
out channels that can each be selected in pairs in the Live
mixing board.

you might be able to fade between different Reason tracks by
sending them out of different channels and fading between
them using the Live crossfader. just need to do some clever
wire connecting on the back of the Reason rack.

i hope that makes sense.

dunno if this has been covered elsewhere BUT:

i have the following problem, and'd be greatful if anyonecan
help me out.
running Mac OS 9.2.2 using cubase 5.2 public beta, rewire2 -
reason 2.5 in slave mode! When i turn a knob of one
component - it will turn a paramater (ie. knob/ slider etc.
of some other component). Eg. if i change the release on the
subtractor - it will also change either the release on
another subtractor i have, or say the release in a dr. rex
etc. There doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to what
other parameter/component it will affect.

All i know is that this doesn't happen in reason stand alone
.. and its fuckin annoying!!!

currently d/l 5.1r1 again .. i can't quite remember whether
there were any rewire2 issues with that - but i guess i'll
find out. :S

Are you sure your sequencer tracks aren't accidently mixed
up, and assigned to more than one component?

offline exillon from San Francisco (United States) on 2004-01-19 02:07 [#01040089]
Points: 122 Status: Lurker

I'd love to figure out how it's happening, that would be a
really cool trick to control. Much like wiht Logic, how you
can set one parameter to control 30 other parameters at the
flick of a knob. Let us/me know!

offline korben dallas from nz on 2004-01-19 02:49 [#01040110]
Points: 4605 Status: Regular

no the sequencer tracks aren't mixed up at all .. as i say
.. it works fine with reason stand alone - and its a problem
with reason per se - tho i think it must be some rewire2
problem with cubase b/c that seems to be the only
difference. ie. i don't even need a sequencer track for that
to happen. i can just have the components and play around
with paramaters = and you can see the other knob move!!!
aaargh

with reason2.5 you have the option to split cv or audio
signals, so technically you can do what you mentioned. the
annoying thing is that this thing that is happening to me is
pretty unpredictable, and it seems happens with any
component .. ! :/

maybe a nice re-install of reason would fiz the rewire
issues.... sux man... hope it gets sorted!
