LOL - That's who I was with before this host... I left them
due to the deal being better at this host and also everyone
complaining about watmm's downtime when I was at
xwebhost...

Looks like I gotta sell a kid and get a dedicated server :)

getting a dedicated server is not automagically equal to
100% uptime. on the contrary, you're getting more
responsibility and "everything" depends on you.

not only you have to rely on your webhosting company but
also on your own machine which you're maintaining.

however, once it's up and running it's a wonderful feeling,
but when it's time to troubleshoot it's all up to you
(unless you wanna pay THEIR technician to reboot the machine
or similiar).

backups are also usually out of the box, which are not the
case on cohosted server.

with all that in mind - good luck!

Oh, I know - I've researched it quite a bit - my only
stumbling block is learning RedHat and Apache - that, and
the responsibility of maintaining the server. Cost is a big
factor though, but I could get that to pay for itself over
time...

wouldnt it be easier and cheaper to just host it from home?

Well, things are going from bad to worse - now it appears
that the hosting company has closed shop - all the site data
is backed up, but the messageboard might be 2 weeks or more
behind as I didn't back up the db very often.

So, for the time being, watmm is effectively dead until I
can find a new host, transfer the domain name, and get
everything uploaded and set up again.

Excuse me while I go back to sobbing...

i had a brief moment of insanity but that's about it...
that's terrible news joyrex.

I'll have a new (better paying) job in a few weeks... I'll
definitely throw a few quid towards hosting as soon as i get
my first paycheque. Shit, monthly pay is going to take some
getting used to.

I must say it's nice to see such civility in the latter bit
of this thread! Long may it continue.

Well, as the night wears on, things are getting better (sort
of):

I got news that a second hack attack occured that rendered
the server unbootable, and data recovery wasn't possible.
The hosting company is relaunching (hopefully by the end of
the week), and are offering a free month to select
individuals. I've asked if I'll get my old plan features
with this new host (highly doubtful), but we'll see how it
goes. I have found a new potential host that might work out,
I'm doing background checks on it to see if it's the real
deal or not. I may move watmm there instead, all depends on
how things play out this week.

The bad news is, since all the server data was lost, none of
the messageboard threads are saved (probably a month back,
but I have to check), so chances are I'll restart the board
fresh (I needed to upgrade the board anyways, and this makes
things easier overall). Everyone would have to re-register,
but that will clear out the dead wood even further since the
last member purge.

watmm lives!

I'm no internet wiz , and prolly speaking out my ass when I
say this, but:
Isn't it wizer to invest in an own server/router/hub
whatever you call it instead of havin to be dependant on
someone else? Sure it might be cheaper, but this is an
ongoing problem

good luck mr.rex

Even though I have a high-bandwidth connection at home,
watmm does waaay too much traffic for a cable connection
(not to mention my ISP limits the upload speed), nor would
my computer be powerful enough to serve that many page & DB
requests. Thanks for the helpful thought though.
